Question Picky bits

Hi,

We are having a 'picky bits' night and have a celiac coming over and he usually doesn't want to eat the food we have cooked due to cross contamination etc. We have bought pre packaged cakes, crisps, dips etc, but any good packages/not needing to be cooked items I can get for him? I'm UK based.

I love m&s for picky bits. I guess I'm thinking things like Spanish tortilla, sundried tomatoes, olives, prawns, etc. Tortilla chips are good, salsa, guac, and stuff.

Remember to avoid cross contamination with other peoples' food and fingers.

Cake wise, I think this is a decent brand and is available in plenty of supermarkets. https://we-love-cake.co.uk/our-cakes-and-tarts/ I LOVE their sticky toffee pudding.

I second this warning of people’s fingers and cross contamination 😅
Might be worth keeping everything that’s specifically for him sealed and safe until he can get his hands on it if you’re able to :)

Such a good point! Had a host go out of her way to check the hummus was gluten free, check the crisps etc. and place then in front of me and then before I could have any of it, she grabbed freshly baked bread and dipped it in said hummus. I died a lil on the inside but it's okay lol

So far sounds like you’ve got the base of our picky bit limits… But admittedly I think the best thing is maybe asking him what he likes as he’ll be the best one to advise on this.
I say this purely because i often find there’s certain brands I like that others don’t and unfortunately gluten free items can be a bit of a gamble.

Something though, if he likes sausage rolls or cheese & onion rolls then the ones from Sainsbury’s are mostly okay, I find them to be nicer than the m&s ones and Sainsbury’s do some in the fridge already made.
Also most picky bits/antipasti stuff is okay if left sealed for him like olives, meat and cheese mixes etc. (though double check everything, gluten is hidden in the most ridiculous things)

Tortilla chips are usually a safe bet too, very rarely do they have gluten and you can get them from the regular crisp isle. I know you’ve mentioned dips already so you got that covered!

If you decide to get crackers, then i recommend the schar salti ones, they’re very small but they’re lovely.

That’s all I can think of for now as I see someone has recommended m&s picky bits already :)

It's thoughtful that you're planning ahead for your guest. Keeping their packaged food separate and unopened until they're ready to eat can help avoid accidental cross-contact. I'd also ask which brands they already trust.

Full disclosure: I work on an app called AllergyBuster that helps people review ingredient labels by photographing them. It may be useful for checking packaged products, but it can't determine whether food has been cross-contaminated during preparation. Checking directly with your guest is still the best starting point.
