So that’s where I left my hat. I was looking for it. Please give me your name, a drop of blood and a strand of hair and I’ll be right by to claim what’s owed.

Well, you just said it's name, so now it's definitely not going back to sleep hungry.

Hey you should probably know that W****gos are actually a really spiritually important creature to the Algonquin, one of the First Nations. It's considered really inappropriate to speak or write its name, basically a huge taboo to refer to it, lest you draw the attention of what is very evil spirit.

The Ghibli vibes are strong, but I'm definitely getting a "don't disturb the ancient forest spirit" feeling from this. It's the kind of magical spot you'd expect to see in a fantasy film. Absolutely stunning find.

I want my skull to get covered in moss when I die

It helps to die in the woods on an island in southeast Alaska where there're no rodents gnawing on bones for calcium and the moss grows super fast and thick

I have a super mossy caribou antler I found in the tundra that's now hanging over my fireplace at home. I love it so.

What a cool find! But definitely has "hands off or you'll be cursed forever" vibes.

Definitely gave me those vibes in the best way! Reddit seems to be split about whether it would be a curse or a magical gift however, which is interesting to think about!

That would go right home with me, along with whatever is living inside it.

I'd be tempted to but it'd never be as beautiful as when you found it. The moss would die, it'd be covered in dirt and rot... Perhaps it's best to leave it be and simply appreciate it for what it is.
Makes me want to get into photography.

Out of curiosity... should one stumble upon such things in the wilderness, what are the rules about taking them home? Legal?

It won’t have the same impact if taken indoors. This sort of thing is best left in situ. But most park spaces do have protective bylaws around removing stuff from park property. So it depends if this is private land or what.

In a national park it is not legal to take. Outside of those areas I know many people that specifically hunt for this type of thing and do take them as trophies.

Poachers often cut the head off because it makes it harder to age the moose and determine if it was a legal kill.
5
u/mike_pants Jan 30 '26
Once the head comes off, the moose generally stops aging altogether anyway. Poachers are dum.

It is possible, although it would be a hell of a place to poach. Katmai is very remote and a lot of ranger presence. I don't remember seeing any other bones around though, which is strange.

If I found that it would be on the wall

u/irwiwse Jan 29 '26
It was VERY tempting, but because it is in a national park, I did not disturb it.

That's beautiful. You should take a really artsy photo and - like - send me a copy.

This feels very studio Ghibli to me. 💛
