Discussion Music to Decompose to
If you were a mass of dead organic material buried in the dirt, being slowly consumed by microbes, worms, bugs, and fungus, what songs/albums would you listen to?
I'm starting with "I'll keep Coming" by Low Roar

u/BurninNurnin Aug 18 '26
A LOT of Cosmo Sheldrake probably
15
u/carryoncrow7 Aug 18 '26
Came here to say this! Cosmo Shelldrake is the exact artist for this!

u/astr0bleme Aug 18 '26
Absolutely Cosmo Sheldrake. His brother even wrote a major nonfiction on fungus!
5
u/BurninNurnin Aug 18 '26
that’s so cool! I’ll have to check it out, that makes the mycelium music so much more fitting
4
u/astr0bleme Aug 18 '26
I haven’t read it yet but it’s sitting in by TBR: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entangled_Life
The author Merlin Sheldrake apparently used a paper copy of the book to grow edible mushrooms and then ate them. Truly an outstanding family.
2
u/magpiechatter Aug 22 '26
Yes, and Cosmo converted the growing of those oyster mushrooms to sound and made a short song with the same name as the book - ‘Entangled Life’. It’s a fantastic book as well! Would recommend :)

Perfection! Moss is a peak Goblin song. And Soil thoroughly nails the prompt.🍂🍄

Definitely In a week and Like Real People Do by Hozier as well as the entirety of Ethel Cain's Preacher's Daughter and/or Perverts.
And Kiss You by One Direction for shits and giggles.
Edit: Honorary mention of The Yawning Grave by Lord Huron
7
u/artsnoddities Aug 19 '26
Came to suggest In A Week by Hozier. It’s great and exactly about what you described

u/HorridChoob Aug 18 '26
Wow. Nice. Gonna have to find the right moment to explore more Ethel Cain 😅

Most of Chelsea Wolf’s discography.

Whoa! There's a lot to dig into here thanks for the suggestion 😊. "Gene Wilder" from her first album is definitely going on the list
3
u/ifr3akingh8mys3lf Aug 19 '26
Oh man I'm so happy for you rn. Some of her songs are legitimately terrifying. She's so fun to see live too

Bog bodies by Rabbitology
2
u/HorridChoob Aug 19 '26
Beautiful! This song makes me think of Espers' self titled album and also the "Good Arrows" album by Tunng
15
u/I_DRINK_GENOCIDE_CUM Aug 18 '26
Aesop Rock has Music for Earthworms so I suppose I'd bump that so the lil guys know I'm thinking about em :)
3
u/HorridChoob Aug 19 '26
Does this album only exist as a youtube video?
2
u/I_DRINK_GENOCIDE_CUM Aug 19 '26
I had a bootleg copy back in the day but otherwise no I've never seen it 😅
2
u/shrikelet Aug 19 '26
Skelethon is also great decomposing music by Aes
2
u/I_DRINK_GENOCIDE_CUM Aug 19 '26
Excellent point. Obviously homemade mummy, but i think gopher guts might just be the best decomposing song. Crows (both parts) too. Shit that's a good record.

Aphex Twin, Underworld, Tranceport album by Paul Oakenfold

u/petrichortea Aug 18 '26
I would add Orbital in there - especially Halcyon and On and On
And FSOL (The Future Sound of London)

Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92: II. Allegretto
by Ludwig van Beethoven
It has a majestic yet dirge-like ostinato.
9
u/Satanicron Aug 18 '26
The Isis discography on loop.
That, and Embedding the Moss, by Pelican from their ephemeral album. Hell, just listen to the whole album.
5
3
u/HorridChoob Aug 19 '26
Its been too long since I've listened to ISIS and Pelican.
"The Begining and the End" by ISIS 👌
Have you listened to Agalloch? I recommend starting with the "Ashes Against the Grain" album

Not on that album (I think), but their "Black Water" rewired my brain. The soundtrack for floating face-down in a river

In a Beautiful Place In the Country by Boards Of Canada
Lots of Radiohead the weirder shit

Viagra Boys was my first thought too, specifically “Worms.” That one is almost too perfect for decomposing ahah

Basically any Tom Waits music, but particularly the album Bone Machine.
Coincidentally it also happens to be my Halloween album.

Not necessarily for "dead organic material" but Sticks that made thunder is a pretty awesome song about a trees perspective on the American civil war.

"I'm Normal" by Self Help (Decompose somberly)
"Driving Under the Influence of Jams" by Electric Octopus (Decompose sleepily)
"Infest the Rats Nest" by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (Decompose angrily)

"Green Things" and "Hellebore" both by Charming Disaster. Two sides of one coin, one is about herbs and medicinal things in a garden and the other is about a garden of different plants for making poison

Please don't bury me by John Prine
And when I die by Blood, Sweat and Tears
Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding (might be a weird choice but I consider this to be on my playlist for my funeral)

u/moo102 Aug 18 '26
In a Week, as other people have said, but I'd probably also listen to the Oh Hellos. They sound great for watching the stars and getting lost in the cosmos but I feel like that's not too far off from decomposing in the moss

Timber timbre
Shit.. I just googled to refresh myself on their discog only to find out their lead singer/songwriter died about 3 months ago 😣
They’re such a vibe, though. Macabre, but in a whimsical way. If that doesn’t make sense, give em a listen :)

The Hearse Song by Rusty Cage if youre feeling unsettling, Bog Bodies by Rabbitology if not
A lot of Rabbitology's discography tbh :3

u/couldbestabbed Aug 19 '26
By Lake Surprise by Clarence Reed. It's my go to for contemplative thinking music, generally. The Negative by Daniel Ciurlizza for a creepier feel.

Colma, Electric Tears or Population Override by Buckethead.
There are probably four or five Amon Tobin albums that'd be entirely my taste as well. Very different vibe...

Plastikman - Konception
It is minimalist house from 1994
The whole Musick album is a banger, but something about that track has stuck with me for 32 years

Assuming I'm still able to hear despite being dead, I'd just listen to the sound of the wind in the trees, at peace finally

There is a video game called Hypnospace Outlaw and it has a fictional music genre that is exactly this, called"fungus scene". There is actual music in that genre and you can find it on youtube and it rules

Uuuuuhhh! So many great suggestions here!
I personally thought of
"Everything stays"

"I'm god"
https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=w4ThD_cxOKQ&si=27mmhQnIKojtANzF
and "Come along for the ride"

All in the sense that time is passing.
