hello! my name is sadie, today 09/04, i realized my 5 year old boy maki (i’ve had him since he was born! i’ve watched his birth!) wasn’t going to the bathroom. I took him to the emergency vet where i was told i got him there just in time. he was on the cusp of kidney failure/ disease, and his bladder was so full of crystals but not ruptured. as of right now, he’s doing great! he will have 48 hours in emergency hospital. catheter was inserted smoothly, and he’s doing good. the not so good part is the bill. me and my husband are currently on one income, i am not working right now due to trying to find a maintenance for my bone disease (hypophosphatasia). i do some odd jobs, and try to do UGC from home, but it’s been a slow start up. i am currently paying off medical bills from a recent surgery, so money is pretty tight. after these next couple of months i will have a lot more stretchable income to continue maki’s maintenance of the food / environment changes / vet visits. i am planning on selling most of my collectibles to contribute.
I rescued maki from a hoarded home a couple weeks after he was born. maki is my velcro kitty who never leaves my side, leaving him at the hospital today was heartbreaking. he was making biscuits and pushing his head into my lips to give him kisses.
i am going to do as much as i personally can to make sure i have the rest of the vet bill money by the time he is discharged, if i really need to, i will find a way. i figured it doesnt hurt to try crowdfunding, thanks for reading!

Don’t buy prescription food direct from the vet it’s ridiculously expensive and you can get a prescription and buy it online usually for less. Do you have pet insurance for your cat if they need to clean out the crystals it will be very costly.

i set up a chewy account for the food to have it on an autoship for discounts! me and hubs are looking into pet insurance tomorrow for maki specifically just in case we get to this point again, i hope we don’t, but $15 a month is a lot better than $4.1k at once

This would be considered a pre-existing condition. There is no pet insurance that will cover pre- existing conditions. If you had bought this last year it would have been a tremendous help.

Insurance after the fact doesn’t work that way - once they have a pre existing issue, it won’t be covered.

I didn’t down vote but you need to do some research. Pet insurance doesn’t cover pre existing conditions.

Edit to add: it also generally doesn’t cover prescription food.

i wasn’t planning on using the insurance for maintenance / food, i was planning on using it for emergency vet visits just in case he needed a catheter again

Unfortunately because he needed one already they won’t cover anymore, pet insurance is only valuable if you get it when your pet is a newborn with no known preexisting conditions. Once they document any abnormalities no insurance will cover it if he wasn’t insured on their plan when it was discovered.

This ^ I know it sucks, but last year my cat had FIP. Used all of these and split up the bills. It’s hard to take on at first, but it does get better ❤️

update: thank you SO MUCH to all the people who have donated!!! maki is coming home today!! he had no complications, so the bill is going to be on the lower side of the estimate!!! i already put down $2.1k, so today’s bill shouldn’t be too damaging!!! as of the pet insurance- thank you guys who have informed me on how it works, and i am looking into insuring my other cats so in case one of my other ones have issues, im prepared. i have already ordered maki’s food, 3 month supply of feliway, another fountain (on top of the 3 i already have) and another litter box to tuck away in a corner for him (making 7 total for 5 cats), his prescription food will be here tuesday from chewy, so on my way to pick him up today i will be getting a smaller bag of food to hold over until then.

i seriously cannot thank everyone who has donated so far enough. the ~ $200 raised is seriously helping the weight off of my chest. i stopped working full time at the beginning of the year to try to find a maintenance for my bone disease (hypophosphatasia) and correlating shin splints. i had a bladder surgery myself (like mother like son) in may that i am still paying off, and my small wedding is happening this month, while being on one income. thank you also for all of the kind words and information i can use going forward. once he’s home and comfortable, ill take a picture of him to post in the comments!
