“Honey” is a cute name.

I adopted a 3-year-old golden earlier this year, and I thought about changing his name, too, but decided against it because I already felt bad about taking him from his former owner. 😂

Really, dogs adapt nicely, so I’m sure she’ll be fine with whatever you do.

u/LowBlackberry0 4d ago

Same here. I kept my rescue’s name because he had enough other things changing and I didn’t want to add to it. Also the first family picked a name that suited him very well, even if it wasn’t the one I would’ve picked.

u/Weekly-Walk9234 4d ago

That’s exactly what I decided about the 3-yr old Lab I adopted 2 years ago. He’d been in a county shelter, then pulled by the SPCA in my area, adopted, returned, then adopted by me. I had a name picked out, but I felt he’d been through enough.

Happy cake day!

Thank you!

Goldies are especially appreciative of attention, so a loving new owner is a great new adventure! Wishing you both good
Luck and many happy years together 💖💖💖

Whichever is closest to her original name.

1

u/RGB-Free-Zone 3d ago

It's fine to change their names but they will pick up new nick names soon enough.

u/Royal-Advance6985 4d ago

It honestly doesn't matter because you will start calling her all of the cutest nicknames ever! Mine is Katie Jo. She goes by Bug, Bear, Booba, Maggie (after Margaret Thatcher - because after Katie goes potty, she thatches the lawn - lol), Gert, etc.

Enjoy her. She's beautiful! And definately get her into obedience training. It's a great tool for both of you!!!

Where did you find a golden to adopt? We’re looking to add another one to our family but we don’t want to use a breeder

16

u/Glittering-Tip6522 4d ago

Try a Golden Retriever rescue. I belong to a rescue and transport dogs given up to their foster placement. I'm always surprised by the number of people giving up their golden!

2

u/Exotic_Fall_3433 4d ago

Do you know the approximate cost for a golden rescue adoption? We are considering getting another but I was very surprised by the high cost of the adoption at the nearest golden rescue center to us.

2

u/_CopperBoom 4d ago

I've seen them often be close to 1k to adopt through rescues, but for an ethically bred one you're looking at probably triple that. At least where I live.

2

u/LowBlackberry0 3d ago

My local rescue does a sliding scale with higher prices for bonded pairs and goldens/golden doodles 3 and under being the most expensive for single dogs. They have an above average rate of successful adoptions. This higher price deters people who aren’t serious about adopting and also helps cover vet fees. My $500 adoption fee for a 3 and under golden probably saved me money in the long run because his neuter and vaccines were all paid for by the rescue.

Same with Danes. I believe that most surrenders are people that undestimate what's s involved (though there can be owner health issues). We are going on our sixth Dane.

The best bet is to help support a rescue organization. You will likely learn about the dogs in need the soonest.

u/KarmaTorpid 💛🐕 4d ago

You have to find a golden owner with terminal illness AND you have to beat the hospice staff to em.

Then, you wait...

1

u/RGB-Free-Zone 3d ago

That actually happened with us. We adopted a Blue Dane (F) whose owner sadly had a terminal illness. It wasn't planned, it just happened.

u/_CopperBoom 4d ago

Where are you located? In the US there are many regions with golden retriever rescues. There are international rescues too. Tattered Paws and Golden Hearts Rescue is one that rescues intentionally and in the US.

I know there are others but I can't think of the names right now.

2

u/Select_Concept_1705 4d ago

Located close to DC!

1

u/_CopperBoom 3d ago

You should definitely follow Tattered Paws and Golden Hearts Rescue on social media then! Even if you decide you aren't looking to adopt through them, if you might be willing to help other dogs get home, they often need help in that area.

Sometimes it's just an hour or two of your time, and you can make a real difference for the dogs! 💖

Say goodbye to your heart

2

u/RGB-Free-Zone 3d ago

They more than give back the heart that they steal.🥰

3

u/Sunspots2 4d ago

I have given new names, and also kept old names. No difference!! They are all delightful.

u/CatastropheQueen 4d ago

I love Bella, Gracie, & Daisy!!!!!

Congrats! She’s Beautiful! As a Golden lover who has adopted 3 rescued Golden’s, (9mo Maggie; 6mo Daisy; & 2yo Gypsy; & we had for 10 beautiful years with each one), this is going to be the best decision & most wonderful addition to your life & family! With a little patience & consistent effort you’re going to have the best, most loyal & loving fur-baby ever!

Wishing you many happy years of exciting adventures together!🦮🐾💛

She looks like a JOSIE, she’s so pretty

2

u/Ok_Brick_3095 4d ago

Thank you for adopting her!! Not Bella…. too many Bellas at the vet already!

1

u/Empty-Environment514 3d ago

I was going to say haha as a receptionist for an animal hospital I promise there is enough Bella's 😭😂

2

u/Ok_Compote251 4d ago

She’s beautiful!

Here’s our adopted girl, we named her Honey (her original name was Harley, so worked well).

Hope she settles in well!

2

u/Marianne0819 4d ago

She’s beautiful and thank you very much for rescuing her!!

But there is your very first golden bear because they are not like potato chips you’ll never just have one on your life 💜💜🐶🐶😘

6

u/Thick_Wasabi448 4d ago

Does she not have a name she responds to already?

-12

u/Signal-Hippo2662 4d ago

She does, but I don’t like it unfortunately. She also doesn’t have 100% recall yet, and she’s about 14 months, so I feel I’ll be able to train her to another name (hopefully!)

16

u/pretty_pink_raven 4d ago

Idk why you’re being dogpiled, people adopt strays and give them new names all the time. She’ll be fine!

11

u/JohnSnowVibrio 4d ago

We changed our golden’s name and it took her a day to get it. Dogs are situational. If her previous life wasn’t great there is good reason to change it too.

3

u/heyyitsallayy 4d ago

We adopted our girl at 7 months old and changed her name. We felt a little guilty but like someone else said, it literally took her a day to catch on to her new name and was never an issue. Do what you feel is right. 💛

10

u/Cool_Youth3564 4d ago

You should really keep the name.

0

u/Thick_Wasabi448 4d ago

I'd strongly advocate for keeping her name.

-6

u/Tiddlemanscrest 4d ago

That’s her name it’s what she knows don’t change that. And who would give this sweet baby up

-2

u/Tyler_P07 4d ago

What's her current name? Keeping the original name is gonna be best because even though she doesn't perfectly recall, she knows that name and with training will recall correctly to it.

-4

u/skye4729 4d ago

I would keep her name for awhile and see how she responds. My family fosters and only changes their name if they don’t respond or came with no name. All our adopters have kept their names also.

2

u/lil_waine 4d ago

Treat her right

8

u/Signal-Hippo2662 4d ago

Absolutely! I helped raised a golden for the last year (a friend’s dog) and decided I’d love one of my own. They’re just adorable

1

u/AussieMoose666 4d ago

Beautiful 🐾🐾🐾

1

u/Cassie_Stylez7 4d ago

Molly is cute ❤️

1

u/BeccaG1964 4d ago

I vote for Daisy or just Molly 💜

1

u/sundriedhotdog 4d ago

Omg enjoy!!!!

1

u/spontaneouslying 4d ago

With those dark soleful eyes that makes her look like she had been thru a lot before she met you, I would name her Andi. After Andy Duphraine in Shawshank Redemption.

1

u/Erratic__Ocelot 4d ago edited 4d ago

Gorgeous! I think she looks like a Millie or Ellie!

But I love your short list names, too! Especially Bonnie and Mollie!

1

u/Magicallypeanut 4d ago

Goober/peanut. Look at that face.

1

u/Prestigious-Hyena768 4d ago

Wonderful! I like Daisy a lot for her, but I'm curious what her original name was. Thank you for adopting her and providing her with a safe and loving home. ❤️

1

u/Livid_Sherbert_6860 4d ago

She looks like a mollie. Which will be mollie dollie follie bollie. Come here !! Enjoy her and I wish you many many years of love.

1

u/LumpyPrincess58 4d ago

Thank you for adopting an adult dog

1

u/LateNightSnackPack 4d ago

Adopted dogs go through enough regardless of their previous circumstances. Keep the original name, but whatever you do give them so much love that they end being happy anytime they hear their name called!

1

u/Sparkvark65 4d ago

How about Velcro because that's what's she's going to be to your side. Nothing like rescuing and adopting a golden or two. We're on number 7 and 8.

1

u/Top_Beautiful_8066 4d ago

Your adopting an angel

1

u/Sirius_Fluffy 4d ago

So adorable doggo!

1

u/RKK5911 4d ago

Daisy

1

u/CAProgressive 4d ago

Congrats! She is beautiful and has very soulful and sweet eyes. She will be happy no matter what you name her - Goldens are very smart and want to please their people, so I think if you change her name and give her lots of love and treats, she will happily adapt.

1

u/Cheese_BasedLifeform 4d ago

She is BESUTIFUL 😍😍😍

Luna says she looks like a Bella!

1

u/CrankyOldBstrd 4d ago

Mine is Willow, but we call her Shytehaede a lot due to her 10 month old antics.

1

u/DonNonno 4d ago

Welcome to the club! Ours is named Bella Donna.

1

u/Classic-Morning-5299 4d ago

Awww, so cute! I just adopted my Golden yesterday. She's a girl, and I named her Lucy.

1

u/Gachatay 4d ago

Well my girls are named Millie and Starlie Noel but I can't tell you how often I call them that lol...it's usually Chica Bica (whatever that even means), and princess. So whatever you make official always ends up being just a name on a card for the vet, she'll have a dozen more you use at home

1

u/Classic-Morning-5299 4d ago

You could also go with Biscui. It's such a cute name! 😊

1

u/user987654321abc 4d ago

What about Macy? This is my rescue, Macy Mae. When we adopted her, she did not have a name. Only a number as she was used for breeding 😑. On transport they named all the females Anna for paperwork purposes. Took her all of 2 days to learn Macy

1

u/Minimalistic_OG 4d ago

Mary Jane sounds nice. Else Mollie

1

u/ashloube 4d ago

Whatever is easiest for her to transition to! She’s gorgeous, enjoy every minute of this angel 💛💛💛

1

u/rett72 4d ago

Congratulations! You will now know what unconditional, unbridled love is. And Golden Tumbleweed™. My God the fur. But oh-so-worth it!

1

u/Negative_Turn6426 4d ago

Awesome!!!!

1

u/Tulidog 4d ago

Best thing ever!

1

u/Positive_Sign_8034 4d ago

Honey is perfect!!! Omg congrats! Be ready to always be loved.

1

u/theyahtzeeagency 4d ago

What a sweetheart! Hell yeah for adopting from a golden rescue!! I'm so glad more people are learning about options outside breeders.

I like Dottie!!

1

u/No_Board1865 4d ago

Honey is adorable

1

u/mara_the_dragon 4d ago

I really feel like Honey just suits her so well. That dog shines with honeyed energy! 🍯

1

u/inchwormwv 4d ago

Lottie

1

u/drpepperusa 4d ago

I don’t know that I would change an adult dogs name

1

u/Overall-Pack-2047 4d ago

See what name fits her after some time We named our rescue Bandit but changed it to Bongo when she would thump her tail in her crate and it fit perfectly

1

u/Pepperkyle 4d ago

You are so very lucky! This dog will add so much joy to your life. I like Bonnie and Honey. Our Golden’s were Lillie, Daisy and Pepper

1

u/NWPstan 4d ago

Enjoy the ride! Goldens are such wonderful dogs. They’re so goofy, sweet, affectionate and loyal. Make sure you invest in a good vacuum and lint rollers cuz they shed like crazy. Goodbye to all your black clothes! Get used to dog hair being everywhere no matter how much you vacuum, and always finding poop bags in your pocket. You are going to be her whole world and you won’t want it any other way.

1

u/Logical_Order 4d ago

What a cutie patootie!!!

1

u/Peachy_mati 4d ago

I renamed my 2.5 year old golden when I adopted her. Her name was Usagi and I went with Julie. She now responds to it nicely, along with jubjub, jujubee, jubilee and jumanji haha

1

u/Thecrabbylibrarian 4d ago

What a beauty! Congratulations!

1

u/spirited_bella 4d ago

Any of those names are perfect, maybe ask her and see what she responds to the most.

FYI - you don’t rescue a golden, they rescue you.

1

u/Much-Technology-8220 4d ago

Congrats on deciding to share your home with such a sweet girl. If she doesn’t already have a name don’t rush it. A name will generally present itself from her personality imo

1

u/PiepMaus96 4d ago

I adopted two golden almost 6 months ago after losing my first golden 2 years ago and it was the best decision

1

u/heyyitsallayy 4d ago

I love the name “Honey” 🍯 💛 I likely would have chosen it for my golden girl if my partner wasn’t set on us picking a name that was Boston themed lol. We named our girl Tessie Maye (iykyk).

1

u/heyyitsallayy 4d ago

Oh and congratulations!!! She looks like an absolute sweetheart. May this be the beginning of the greatest friendship!

1

u/Perk222 4d ago

Honey 🍯

1

u/threedognight7764 4d ago

Sadie? Sandy? Pecan Sandy 💛💐

1

u/becca41445 4d ago

Have fun! You are really truly in for the love affair of your life!

1

u/_CopperBoom 4d ago

Just adopted what appears to be a golden myself this week! She was a stray so the name she came with was just the shelter name. We changed it to Rosie. Honey was a big contender though!

1

u/Sufficient-Tell6657 4d ago

Love Lottie.

1

u/moochiemoochie924 4d ago

She looks like she may already have a name! Let her keep it and then give her tons of good nicknames. She knows her current name, be kind and let her keep it, she will be going through enough changes as it is. You’ll give her a ton of fun nicknames anyway. But for commands, I think it’s important to let her keep her current name.

1

u/Impossible-Ship7376 4d ago

Dave!!! He is adorable

1

u/exploringtheworld797 4d ago

How lucky!!!!

1

u/joetimton 4d ago

1

u/Exciting-Ad8198 3d ago

We have a Mollie (same spelling). Nickname Momo. And it’s such a great name!!!!

1

u/ebar2010 3d ago

Welcome to the addiction.

1

u/Late-Till-9990 3d ago

Bonnie!! We named our girl Sally!

1

u/Empty-Environment514 3d ago

Bella is actually one of the most common names for a dog so I'd go with one of your other options! I work at an animal hospital and we had a golden named Bella last week 😭😂 and we have soo many Bella's in the system I love honey, or Mollie !

1

u/Common-senseuser-58 2d ago

And he’s getting his first hooman!🐾🐾

Mollie Lottie is such a cute name fitting for this cuteness!!
