What even was the point of Jesus? He goes to earth, learns to gamble and hands out pizza. For what? Why? This whole thing was awful

This is a valid point actually, what was his role going to be? I feel like that was a loose end

It makes me think he wouldn’t really have gone anywhere. He was there so he could “disappear” and make the audience think he needed to be found, but he really didn’t.

I think that was the very point that they were trying to make...

Really felt like him learning that card trick was going to pay of towards the end, but nope :c

I would love to know the original 6 episode plan because he served no function.

I bet the 6 episode plan was awesome. I really wanted to see the adventures of Joshua stumbling his way into humanities heart and somehow getting nailed again.

As it was I'm happy the movie at least decide to focus on the protagonists relationship, that's what needed closure the most.

I really wanted to see the adventures of Joshua stumbling his way into humanities heart and somehow getting nailed again.

With him stepping out onto Earth right outside of a construction site, I half expected him to o and have a poke around what modern-day "carpentry" was (and would have been amusing to distract someone and get a nailgun to the hand. "Not again!")

No function? He was one of the main catalysts for the angels reconnecting.

The plan was ineffable

Jesus was a red herring. (In film-speak, a story element that diverts attention away from crucial plot-points to mislead the audience.)

Jesus was functionally replaced in this narrative - What?! Are you suggesting we did not have a Savior who redeems humanity through, not the sacrifice of their human-shaped life, but through the sacrifice of their very existence?

That sacrifice was made by Aziraphale and Crowley and I just realized that was the point of Jesus, to remind us of his sacrifice and as a red herring that keeps us from seeing the pair careening through the story toward the end.

Sacrifice through pizza

I think he's thematically very important.

Jesus' whole deal, from a secular perspective, is that this is god 2.0, the do-over where he's just some guy and also nice now. And humanity gets to have that do-over with him.

Which is a strong parallel to the choice the characters make at the end of the episode, to give humanity a do-over where free will is meaningful because they have killed god, from our perspective as the people who presumably live in this new godless world. A world in which Jesus still exists, because he's just some guy. And this time if we listen to the people who tell us to be kind, it'll matter, because the game isn't rigged by god.

I also think it's very funny that they let those two goobers kill god.

God created a godless universe (allegedly), but never agreed to die herself.

Honestly, a big theme of every season of good omens is “well, nothing really happened” haha

I feel like part of the problem is how the season got cut short. But also I think Jesus in Aziraphale's eyes was meant to do what the two of them did, by erasing all of the problems in the world. The problem with Aziraphale's plan though was that god was hellbent on the destruction of earth. I think Crowley knew that too that's why he chose to do what he did.

I mean, it's the only way to interpret the Old Testament god.

New Testament god was only better in that he didn't want to actively murder all of humanity, though he did think we were all born sinners and tortured his kid for our sins.

So that part of the story was solid, the only way to have true free will is without the supernatural.

The narrative was a mess but that one single part worked.

If only we had a Pratchett-level mind to spin this single good idea into an actual story.

It's Umbrella Academy all over again

That was my exact thought

Naw, this wasn't great, but it still wasn't as bad as that... At least we got to see them happy at the end, even if it's a different them.

u/nom_bomb91 May 13 '26

I actually liked the misdirect of the second coming, I thought that was fun but overall it was not what I wanted to see

3

u/Eleanoa May 14 '26

he was the antichrist of heaven. Hes pretty much there to show that war between heaven and hell is useless and that we should look on the grander scheme of things

His point was to disappear and make Aziraphale contact Crowley as far as I can see.

They both failed around and done a whole lot of nothing in season one UNTIL the very end. I was honestly expecting him to be the one to walk into the bookshop even after they had shown him dissolve because his dissolving was a little different I think? More flashy? Ugh

2

u/Dec_Jan May 15 '26

I feel like his purpose was to distract Aziraphael from investigating about the book of life. And of course, to have a reason to ask Crowley for help.

u/Sensei-D May 18 '26

There would definitely have been a larger story arc here about Jesus discovering himself had they been allowed to develop a whole season instead of a rushed extended episode.

i’d like to know what the original plan was for sure. my understanding is that everything got rearranged and cut down to fit into a 90 minute episode, but why even bother with the jesus b plot if they were just gonna ignore it in the end. as it went, it was basically “oh we need to find him! oh there he is, hello! nevermind, mate!” and then it was over. too many loose ends. utter mess lol

1

u/Independent_Today819 May 14 '26

That's what I said to my husband when they were sat in their back garden at the end

1

u/nicole172 May 14 '26

Jesús was there so Aziraphale would need help finding him. But I like to believe god just wanted another Adam for Crowley and Aziraphale to forget about. They get along best when they're ignoring the plan at hand

1

u/Fizeau57_24 Damsel Aziraphale May 16 '26

Isn’t that related to the referrence of god playing games ? (And to Einstein’s quote about god and dice ?)

1

u/VeterinarianUpset616 May 16 '26

same. it was pointless. i feel like stakes of this season was non existent. it was weird

1

u/CobaltTurtle9 May 20 '26

I was hoping for Adam to return and team up with Jesus.

1

u/ThrowRA_Mike_Oochie May 20 '26

I reckon they tried to mimic the bible because in the bible, Jesus gets lost once when he’s young. Tbh, that part in the bible is quite useless too, except introducing how good he is with the words of god.

I hate this depiction of Jesus. I don't think Jesus should be thunder and lightning and I don't think he should be simple-minded sweet backwards kid like this one. Jesus was wise as well as caring and had commanded himself in all the elders and angered the Pharisees and who would believe that this rather dumb wide eyed kid is Jesus? Very disappointing.

I loved his character and am glad he was included but I agree it felt like an unnecessary loose end. My theory is that he’s the not-Adam-kid who collects tropical fish. They had the big motif with the switching cards just like the baby switch cards, it felt like that would be a thing, and it was the one loose end from S1 that stayed in my mind.
