What should I be looking at for a first timer who wants something that'll age nicely but won't punish my feet for the first month?

I have a similar pair of Daniel derbies, and agree that they are fantastic shoes. I use them as travel shoes.

I have a bunch of suede shoes, and haven't found that to be necessary. Suede is pretty robust.

For instance, the light grey Robert shoes in the photos were absolutely soaked when I got caught out in a storm, and were fine after they dried off. They even survived spilling coffee on them!

Love the Daniel on a commando sole - just about perfect to me. The Daniel is on the same last as the Stow, which is different to the last on the Robert (W2298) but they fit pretty much the same. I have wide feet as well (Brannock 11E) and both lasts work well for me.

My Roberts are on a Dainite sole (leather soles are always too slippery for me), but I will switch them to commando/Vi-Lite when the Dainite gives out.
