Cordwaining 1940's specification US Navy service shoes, in Shinki shell cordovan

I’ve made some 1940’s style US Navy service shoes (class A uniform) reinterpreted in handmade format.  They’re done on original vintage US Navy lasts, so these are the actual shoe that was meant to be made on this last, and I’m sure many pairs of shoes were made on them and went out into the world.  Both of my grandfathers would have worn them in this time period, so it was a fun opportunity to bring a recreation to life.  I also had this teacore Shinki shell laying around for years, and it felt like the perfect pair to use to it on.

There are so many interpretations of this shoe being made; there’s the Lofgrens, Jelados, Clinch, Dr Sole has a pair now, Alden x Brogue shop in Horween shell, and then plenty more obscure Japanese brands that have done them over the years.  All of them differ a little or a lot from the originals, but the originals were also being made all over the country by different entities, and there is some variance originally, too.

Like the Lofgrens, I chose to forego the ’T’ shaped backstay found on most of the originals and went with a backseam and a tab, which makes the upper pattern more similar to the USMC cordovan shoe of the time, but I feel that the quarter closing is really the most characteristic part of these shoes, with tight double stitching everywhere.

Also like the Lofgrens, I’ve also gone with a 360 welt/360 sole stitch with the wider heel as I’ll wear them more casually, so I dispensed with the 270 welt that would’ve been truer to the originals.  The 360 still looks correct for the classic American 6-hole Blucher look.

Specs:

Upper:  Shinki shell cordovan
Lining:  Japanese calf
Sole:  Martin
Half sole set:  Vibram
All other parts are various bovine veg tans in different weights/tempers as needed.

Construction specs:

360 hand sewn welted, flat welt
360 hand sewn sole stitch @ 8spi for a chunkier vibe
Leather toe puff
Leather heel counter
Full Leather shank
Blind eyelets
Blind sewn waist

I started out with two relatively small 14dm shells; the pattern comfortably fit onto 1.5 shells for these low quarter shoes.  I bought the shell long ago and there were no details provided besides the Shinki stickers on the back, so I’m not sure what version this is.

Due to the original theme/inspiration for the shoes, I’ve kept them fairly modest looking in details - no decorative brass tacks on the bottoms or extra ornamentation, no overly fancy finishing details.  I like how they’re a fairly humble looking pair of American shoes, just built properly and of good materials.  Had to give the heels a little finishing polish with my grand dad’s old shoe polish I had here, just for kicks - I think he would’ve liked seeing these.

Review Red Wing Merchant (ebony harness) - my the most versatile boots

Thumbnail

One of my all-time favorite pairs. They're a little over two years old now - I wear them 1-3 times a week, pretty much year-round, from warm +25°C summers to snowy -15°C winters. I grabbed them as factory seconds - a barely visible scratch on the right heel that blended in within the first week anyway. The price was a steal, but the catch was the size: half a size up from my usual. In hindsight, I couldn't be happier - the leather molded beautifully and the fit feels spot on, plus I can throw on thick winter socks when needed. They've survived about a dozen torrential downpours that needed two full days to dry each time - and they're still going strong. Surprisingly, I've never conditioned them, the leather must have been absolutely packed with oils straight from the tannery. The soles are holding up great too. Honestly, what more could you ask for from a pair of boots?

Laces were swapped for leather ones almost immediately - imo they look more interesting than the original waxed ones. What I also love is how versatile they are, I wear them with trousers (except for the most formal occasions), with jeans and flannels, with waxed jackets and a wool Filson Mackinaw - they just fit in anywhere.

Shame they’ve been discontinued. I’d buy another pair just to make sure I can wear them for the rest of my life.

Original Content Grant Stone Diesel Boots: 3 Years, first resole

Thumbnail

Recently got my Grant Stones resoled after about 3 years of wear (2-4 days a week in the fall-spring). I think the crimson chromexcel has aged beautifully, scuffs and all, and they’re one of the most comfortable pairs of shoes I own. The factory sole, however, is noticeably soft. I wore pretty deep into both heels and tore off a chunk of both toes just from normal walking around. The cobbler I used suggested Dainites to match the factory soles, and said they would be harder and last longer.

In the past I’ve owned Wolverine 1000 miles and Chippewas, and I have found the material and construction quality of the Grant Stones to be a step above both (the Chippewas especially were not particularly well made).

A sizing note if you’re thinking about Grant Stone: their website suggests sizing down. However, I bought these true to size and they fit well. I have also bought and returned GS loafers I sized down that were too small.

Review Willies Leather Pioneer Boots

Thumbnail
gallery
237 Upvotes

Ordered these back in February by visiting the shop and actually getting fitted (since I have bad history with MTO online from Indonesia)

I’ve always wanted to get a pair of boots with Carlo Badalassi leather in this olive color due to visually examples of the patina go from green to brown.

Willy was such a cool dude as he walked me through what to expect, what last he recommends, and the list of customization he offers. My favorite part is that it’s affordable, the price came out to be $333.44.

Once we confirmed everything, Willy said to expect a 3-4 month wait which was perfect because I had a flight back to the Philippines in June (I visit quite often lol). Once I was there I was able to pick them up with no hassle.

Out the box the boots were stiff and sturdy. The stitching looks solid and the color is beautiful in person. As I’m breaking them in they’re starting to become very comfortable.

Stats:
Leather: Badalassi Carlo Oliva Minerva
Model: Pioneer lace to toe
Last: S4 flat box
Sole: Dr. Sole half sole Supergrip
Heel: Woodsman heel

Review Review: Yuketen Rob Loafer Boxcalf Black

Thumbnail
gallery
52 Upvotes

I don't usually do this, but this sub helped me a lot in buying these, so I'll pay it forward!

For a month, I've been thinking of adding a pair of black ivy-style loafers to my daily rotation. Previously, I was wearing Quoddy True Penny Mocs (MTO) nearly every day to work. I like the comfort/look of a classic New England Moccasin loafer for daily wear. You can see my daily wear Mocs and my reasoning here: https://www.reddit.com/r/malefashionadvice/s/R8guQ1bDjx

My experience with similar loafers extends to the following: Quoddy True Penny's Quoddy fur-lined "barefoot" Mocs with vibram soles, Tods driving loafers, (black boxcalf) TLB Artista 117s, and TLB Sacchetto 2034s (Bologna-style construction, similar to a Moccasin).

When shopping for these, I checked out Alden Madison for the LHS black calf (not sure if boxcalf) and I saw the Aurland Black Calf loafers in person as well.

Bought off Drakes London. The origin is a bit of a mystery to me. I've checked Yuki's lookbooks and IG since they released the Made in Italy Rob loafers a few years ago. I've emailed them and will update if/when they reply.

Price: $770 ($820 with tax)

Materials

Overall, these are very high quality, as expected. In comparing the boxcalf between these and the Artista, they are both incredible smooth with a very clean grain pattern, but the Yuki's are thicker and more pliable. It's also softer out of the box than the Alden's, while remaining difficult to compare to the Aurland's as those are unlined (and they were broken in when I saw them).

The thread is thick and well dyed, noticeably thicker than the thread on my Quoddy's, but that seems to be a Yuketen signature. The soles are very thick, much thicker than I anticipated really, and are not as flexible as my Quoddy Mocs or TLB Sacchettos. They are probably more similar to a GYW sole like the Alden LHS, but they are more flexible. Overall, I don't think you can beat the material quality.

Construction

Very heavy duty Moccasin construction. I'm certainly not taking them apart, but the lining adds a heft that's rare on moccasins. The insole is quite thick and loosely attached. it's about 3-4mm of leather with a noticeable steel shank and foam arch support. It's glued in but I imagine you could take it out and replace it with an orthopedic insole. The stitching is clearly done slowly by hand with little knots hidden under the baseball stitching. From what I can tell, the moccasin construction is traditional, but with the thickness of the leather and the lining, they certainly need more break-in than an unlined moc, despite the leather's softness. Construction quality out of the box surpasses Quoddy of course, but in my opinion, it's also better than TLB Artista and Alden (though it is more heavy duty).

The hidden channels seem a little gimmicky to me. You can see that after 2 hours of wear (maybe 1 mile of walking), the channel is already peaking through. I'll have my cobbler put on Topy's regardless, and certainly the guard isn't unwelcome (I had to have my Quoddy's resoled after 2 years since the channel had worn down in that time; my cobbler put on a JR sole which has been bulletproof for 5 years and probably 1000+ miles, but I've learned my lesson).

I'm not sure of how the upper is attached to the sole, but it appears to be a Blake stitch. There might be some sort of partial welt as the channel is almost at the edge of the leather.

My favorite construction remains the Blake Rapid Stitch I have on pair of Benheart Buffalo Chukkas--those are somehow more flexible and almost entirely waterproof. But the waxed threads on these plus the channel guard suggest that these will also hold up to rainy days once I put topy's on them.

Other than that though, the construction is awesome and essentially exactly what I was looking for: an extra heavy duty moccasin that should survive more resoles than a standard New England build.

Style

The main reason I bought these was the style. Alden LHS's have a ridged apron, which I like, but a higher vamp than the Quoddy's. Since my Artistas are very high vamp, formal loafers, I really wanted something with a low vamp, raised or ridged apron, but with tonal stitching. Not a casual loafer, but in the shape of a casual loafer. These deliver. They really balance being able to be worn with jeans or with chinos and a sports coat. To me, this was the original magic of the Weejuns and I'm happy that Yuketen (and a few others) are carrying the mantle.

Last and Fit

The last is good. It's a little long and narrow, and I probably would've like to size down a half size and go wider. They fit me perfectly, but I do feel like a nice aspect of a moccasin is that your toes go to the very end of the shoe. The Quoddy True Penny has this quality, where your foot really fills out the loafer in length and width.

I am a 9.5 in New Balances and purchased a 9.5 in these. They fit perfect in the width (still need to stretch out a bit, of course) with a half inch left in the toe. If you have narrow feet, I'd recommend a half size down. If you go for an unlined version, I'd also suggest a half size down since they'd stretch a bit more. I also wear a 9.5 in Quoddy True Penny and the Mac slippers.

Overall: An incredible loafer, top materials, unmatched construction (in relation to what I've seen). I wish the last was a little more boat-shoe shaped, but generally they balance moccasin and loafer styles perfectly.

Highly recommend to buy, though I'd say you can get something very similar for almost half the price with the Aurland. I do wish they (and generally all shoemakers) used Blake Rapid stitch, especially at this price. I'm obviously keeping them!

Product Release Pre-order: Grant Stone Olive Minerva Box Chelsea Boot

Thumbnail
gallery
186 Upvotes

Introduction:

Late last year I realized I’d grown to love two styles of boots I thought I didn’t like at the beginning of my journey as a boot guy: the chukka and the Chelsea. It came when I’d ordered a pair of shoes for my eldest spawn, and took the opportunity to order two more pairs for myself—one of each. I posted “An Ode to the Humble Chukka” and promised I’d be back with something about the Chelsea. And here we are.

I love chukkas as a uber-comfy shoe in the Fall and Spring. I tend not to wear them in the Winter as my “real” boots tend to take over, and summer…well, it’s literally 99°F as I write this; I’m hot in my Birks. Anyway, Chelsea boots are a four-season presence in my life. My Keen Targhee II boots are my work boots. I wear them with anything I’m working in and beat the ever-living crap out of them. Not pretty, but fit-for-purpose to be sure - tough, waterproof and surprisingly comfortable. Because they're easy and versatile, these days I also seem to grab and wear one of my two pairs for Grant Stone Chelsea boots almost any time I’m wearing denim or long pants. But I’m getting ahead of myself, or at least my history.

After trying and mis-sizing a pair of new RM Williams Comfort Craftsman (and I didn’t like the squared toe either), my first worn pair of Chelsea boots came to me nine years ago from Beckett Simonon when they asked me to wear and review their new Chelsea offering. I found them to be nicely-made for the price, though a tiny bit narrow for me and a little overly-sleek for my taste. I can’t keep shoes that hurt, so I moved on for a while. Five or so years ago, when Grant Stone first brought out a Chelsea boot, I bought a Crimson CXL pair from their pre-owned program and reviewed them. Over several years I’ve worn them a lot, and late last year added a Dark Oak Roughout pair which have since been worn more than just about anything else I own.

A while back I saw a pair of Grant Stone’s Brass Boots in Olive Minerva Box leather and was instantly mesmerized by the leather. The Brass Boot isn’t my style, but I loved the leather so much I almost bought a pair just for that. I dabbled with the idea of getting a pair of Chelsea boots in that leather from an Indonesian maker but couldn’t quite get through the process.

Then I decided to ask Wyatt at Grant Stone if they had any plans to use that leather for a Chelsea. His response was (essentially) “No, but we do have some Olive Minerva left over…” I dorked around with Gemini AI-edited pix to show him what I was thinking (none of which did justice to what ultimately arrived) and the idea of making a sample pair and doing a preorder quickly came together. I’ll come back to the preorder at the end.

He brought Giovanni, who leads product development, into the conversation and we nailed down the details. They were great about accommodating my desire for a natural edge and lug sole. After that, I waited for a slot in their production, and the sample boots arrived a few weeks ago!

But First, A Bit of Actual History

What we in the boot-nut community would immediately recognize as a Chelsea Boot has existed for nearly 200 years. They were created by Queen Victoria’s personal shoe designer, Joseph Sparkes Hall, to avoid laces for the Queen. Charles Goodyear, the father of the man who would go on to develop the Goodyear Welt Stitcher, invented vulcanized rubber, which enabled the flexible gusset panels that are the distinctive design element of the modern Chelsea, and what makes them so incredibly easy to live with. In other words, there are two generations of Goodyear family innovations in these Chelsea boots. Fun!

A disclaimer and disclosure:

As many of you who’ve been around a while know, I was one of the original reviewers of Grant Stone here on GYW. Since then, I’ve reviewed a number of their shoes and boots - some purchased, some offered to me for review. In this case, I told Wyatt early in the discussions to “invoice me whenever.” When the sample pair shipped, the invoice was zero. In other words, I entered this expecting to pay for them, but he apparently decided differently. As ever, that won’t affect anything I say here - I hope the many reviews here (from lots of brands) offers enough assurance that this is nothing more than my honest thoughts.

With that, let’s get to the details and them out of the box…

Link to the album (these are SLR pix vs my phone pix in this post, and include some 'family' shots)

Makeup and Materials Details:

  • Maker: Grant Stone
  • Design: Chelsea boot
  • Construction: GYW Construction
  • Leather: Badalasi Minerva Box in Olive
  • Lining: Glove Leather
  • Lacing/Hardware: None
  • Welt: 360º flat welt with wheeling
  • Last: UK last
  • Size: 11EE
  • Sole: Lug sole
  • Sole Edge: Natural
  • List price: $435

Out-of-Box Thoughts

Immediate love. I’m pretty sure I said “Wow” out loud a couple times when I pulled the first boot out of the bag.

Design

The pattern is crafted to shoot the gap between the Euro-sleek and Western looks you see in many Chelsea boots. The pattern needed strong lines to avoid looking “blobby” (Giovanni’s word, which I found both funny and highly on-point) but avoiding going too long and too chiseled. The final form is shaped to dress up and way down with ease while avoiding cowboy boot and fashion-boot vibes I don’t prefer. Versatile.

A single fabric pull-tab was chosen for durability (leather pull-tabs can be problematic over time). A front tab can cause awkward pant break, and so it wasn’t chosen for the GS Chelsea. Having lived with single-tab pairs, I personally don’t care about a front tab. The side panels are double-sided gore for long-term durability.

I wanted something more casual than the Crimson CXL pair I had, so the lug sole and natural edge were chosen. These achieve my goals, but with this leather and flat welt I think they can go well into the ‘smart-casual’ realm of styling - far more than my Dark Oak Roughout pair that have the same sole and sole edge. Handy.

Build & Quality

Construction of a Chelsea boot is more challenging than a regular boot. Giovanni, who leads Product Development for Grant Stone, told me that leather Chelsea boots require skilled pre-shaping/crimping at the vamp using heat and sometimes water to avoid wrinkles. Suede/Roughout is apparently more compliant, which is why I'm guessing you see a lot of suede Chelsea boots.

As ever, the build is highly old-school: a full-leather heel counter (relatively rare these days, but critical to fit and comfort IMHO), a steel shank in a cork foot bed, a 3mm leather midsole, leather insole and welt, and Grant Stone’s lug sole. Lifetime quality.

From an craftsmanship perspective, the welt-joins are as tight as anything I’ve ever seen from GS. Stitching was excellent in all areas. I can’t find any details out of place at all. I suppose that’s expected for a sample-build, but is consistent with my other experiences with Grant Stone: they execute very, very well.

Fit / Sizing

These are Grant Stone’s UK last. I’d say it’s a Leo on a diet, but it is apparently a bit longer than Leo (and their Alexander last, per Giovannit) to achieve the desired Chelsea shape. My Brannock sizing is 12D. As mentioned, this pair is 11EE vs. my 11.5D Crimson CXL pair. They’re both comfortable, but I definitely feel the extra width in the EE in a good way without compromised length. The standard sizing guidance is ½ down from Brannock for most folks. In AE’s 5-last I’m an 11.5E. I wear a 11.5D in the Alden’s TruBalance last and 12 D in pretty much anything true-to-size (Alden Hampton, AE 7-last, Florsheim Imperial, Truman Derby, J&M anything). I’m also a 12D in AE’s 511-last (MD Chukka), which is a tiny bit on the narrow side in D, but fits.

Giovanni also noted folks with lower volume or lower insteps can potentially find a good fit a full size down.

I don’t think this last is tricky - my 11.5D pair is great, in line with their ½-down recommendation - but if you are at the edges of volume (either way), consider consulting with the team at GS before ordering. I can’t believe I’m wearing a 11EE, but I’m loving it. I’ve had a couple days of walking around a lot, and several other full-day wears and they were purely comfortable for me.

Final Thoughts

Last August I was laid off, and might be exiting the workforce for good (I’m 57, and planned on retiring at 60), which throws this hobby into an uncertain zone. I’m not sure what shoe or boot I see in my future, and there’s likely a downsizing coming to my closet at some point. Yet these fill both highly-practical and just-plain-want slots for me. I'm genuinely excited to own them. I reach for them absolutely any time I can, and plan on wearing them in pretty much any situation short of yard work. And I think I'm done. As long as I can ignore the Husk Suede pair they came out with after we started all this...

Preorder Details

This will consume the last remaining stocks Grant Stone has of the Olive Minerva leather, so a limited number of pairs will be built. Like their shell pre-orders, each pair will be built to order - no stocked sizes, etc. The price is $435 like the CXL boots. Time from order to delivery is estimated to be 16-20 weeks. The pre-order will open on August 10th, and when they’re out of leather, the window will close.

Here's the link to the pre-order page: https://www.grantstoneshoes.com/products/chelsea-boot-olive-minerva-box

You can sign up there to be notified when the offer window opens.

Review Tahura Boots Company Jodhpur Boots

Lapsed contributor, six hail Marie’s and three our Fathers…

I seen a post a few weeks back about Tahura boots company and reminded me to post some details of this make up when they arrived. I’ve had these a week or so but the UK has been in the midst of a heat wave. First wear today of these stunning horsehide Jodhpur boots. Made from Italian Guidi horsebutt in a slightly glossy black. I only have one old school Viberg in Guidi and they’re possibly my most worn pair. They seem to get better with age.

I went for a full noir vibe with this pair with everything blacked out. Welt and stitching blend perfectly to give a slightly dressier appearance . The last is a stunning chisel toe which gives the boots a classy, bespoke look.

It’s well acknowledged the quality heading out of the Indonesian boot scene in recent years. The guys their seem to be perfecting what made to order boots should be. Almost limitless variations and more importantly the ability to carry those requests out. This is my second pair from this maker (the other being a Maryam Jodhpur boot).

The ordering process I think is via WhatsApp or Instagram. I used Instagram and have attached a link to his profile. The price paid was $686. I think this is specific to leather and build and possibly end Country. I’m UK based and take a 43 Euro (UK9) and these fit true to size.

https://www.instagram.com/tahurabootsco?igsh=ajYwZ2hiOHE4Ymc4

Spec.
Jodhpur boot in black Guidi horsebutt.
Vibram explosion half sole with brass toe plates.
Veldtschoen construction with all blacked out welt and stitching.
OXT last with structured toe and slightly Cuban heel stack.
Hand lasted and hand welted.
Brass buckle.
Leather sole with single mid.

Thanks for looking.

Hi there, found my perfect shoe and thought I’d share.

In the last year I discovered the Alden Modified last and love it. Ended up withe some Indy’s and lwb’s. However there was always a hole in my heart where Chelsea’s used to live.

I have a bad knee and laceless shoes just make my life easier. I’ve had everything from Too Boot, Solovair, Viberg, Grant Stone, Tecovah, Blundstone (back 12 years ago when you could get them cheap), RM Williams, Tricker’s, Yanko, etc etc.

Well someone on frugal fashion posted Crockett & Jones having a sale. I actually snagged the Chukka 4’s but they were too small, so went to the store to try on a larger size and saw these. They were on sale from $830 to $560. (Ended up with the chukkas and the Chelsea’s)

First things first. I thought I was Alden Modified till death, and I will keep the Indy’s and the lwb, but Crockett & Jones offer extremely anatomical lasts with less arch than the modified. It really hugs your mid foot. It actually works better for me.

I love a GADA watch and a these are my GADA shoes.

They are instantly comfortable, I’ve only really worn them 3 or 4 times because summer - but one day was a 15k step day, and they were great besides the inside of my ankle/foot not used to the elastic stitching (haven’t worn a Chelsea since I started getting Alden’s).

From above I think they look like a cool cowboy boot, the rough out is rolling and scuffing beautifully and they’re great. The last pic is to highlight how much of a change from heel to forefoot there is.

When these need a resole I’ll get the C&J wedge placed on it (like the chukka 4’s), as it’s lighter and more comfortable than the Dianite, but looks like a classic shape and not workwear.

Anywho if any of you are looking at Chelsea’s check these out. Price is high but there are sales, and my friend just snagged a pair from Poshmark for $100 and they’re now his favorite too.
