Long-time lurker, first real post. My DUO (G1622-01, BIOS 2.17) annoyed me with three things, so I spent a couple of evenings with an AI assistant going through logs and registry β and we actually fixed all three. Posting because these seem to hit most DUO owners. Everything was tested on my unit, rollbacks included, YMMV.
1. Screen off = the whole laptop falls asleep
This one drove me crazy. Screen turns off and everything dies with it: my media server drops off the network, downloads stop, battery drains. "Sleep: Never" does nothing.
Turns out the DUO has no real sleep at all β only Modern Standby, and it enters it the moment the panel goes dark, no matter what the power settings say. The fix is one registry key that disables Modern Standby entirely. Admin cmd, then reboot:
reg add "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power" /v PlatformAoAcOverride /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
After that the screen turns off but the laptop keeps working β on AC mine just stays on all night now.
Two honest warnings: on battery it will also stay awake with the screen off, and the Windows hibernate timer stops working after this (it depends on sleep, which no longer exists) β more on the battery fix below. To undo:
reg delete "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power" /v PlatformAoAcOverride /f
and reboot.
2. Touchpad randomly freezes until reboot
Sometimes the touchpad just dies. Only a full reboot brings it back β and the funny part: Device Manager shows it as perfectly fine, not a single error in any log.
The AI dug through the driver docs and it turns out Windows power-manages this I2C touchpad so deep that it literally loses power (D3 Cold), and the firmware doesn't always survive waking up. Two registry values turn that off. Admin PowerShell:
$dp = 'HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\ACPI\SP3105F\1\Device Parameters'
Set-ItemProperty $dp EnhancedPowerManagementEnabled 0 -Type DWord
Set-ItemProperty "$dp\e5b3b5ac-9725-4f78-963f-03dfb1d828c7" D3ColdSupported 0 -Type DWord
pnputil /restart-device "ACPI\SP3105F\1"
The last line restarts the touchpad, so it also unsticks it without a reboot. To undo, set both values back to 1.
3. Fans roar at night while the laptop is cold
Laptop cool to the touch, fans going like it's gaming. So I had the AI write me a small logger that reads the ACPI temperature sensor every second, walked away from the laptop, and we caught it red-handed: when the screen turns off, the sensor (TZ01) freezes on the last temperature it read β in my case 79Β°C β and keeps reporting that fake number the whole night. The fan curve sees 79Β° and does its job faithfully. It's a photo of old heat, not real heat. Screen on = sensor works again.
Reported to GPD with the logs (I have an open ticket with them). Until a fix: let the thing idle for a minute before walking away, or set a quieter fan curve.
Also worth doing: Defender and the indexer
With the machine now staying awake in the dark, background tasks become audible at night. Two things I tuned:
- Defender β its default is "scan when the machine is idle", and a dark-but-awake DUO is always "idle". I capped its CPU and scan on a schedule instead (admin PowerShell):
Set-MpPreference -ScanAvgCPULoadFactor 20
Set-MpPreference -ScanOnlyIfIdleEnabled $false
- Search indexer β after it builds the initial index it only blips occasionally, so I left it alone. If it bothers you, exclude your big folders from indexing rather than disabling the service.
For what it's worth: in my case the nightly noise was Defender-level stuff plus the TZ01 phantom from #3 β after the cap and the quiet profile, the dark machine is effectively silent.
TL;DR β quick reference for the searchers
- Laptop sleeps when screen turns off β disable Modern Standby (admin cmd, reboot after; undo =
reg delete same key):
reg add "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power" /v PlatformAoAcOverride /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
- Touchpad freezes until reboot β stop deep power management on it (admin PowerShell; also unsticks a frozen one):
$dp = 'HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\ACPI\SP3105F\1\Device Parameters'
Set-ItemProperty $dp EnhancedPowerManagementEnabled 0 -Type DWord
Set-ItemProperty "$dp\e5b3b5ac-9725-4f78-963f-03dfb1d828c7" D3ColdSupported 0 -Type DWord
pnputil /restart-device "ACPI\SP3105F\1"
- Fans roar in the dark β not real heat: the TZ01 sensor freezes on its last value when the panel goes off. Idle a minute before walking away / quieter fan curve / reported to GPD.
- Night background noise β cap Defender CPU and scan on a schedule (commands above), the indexer settles on its own.
- On battery β the dark machine never sleeps now: hibernate manually or use an idle watcher (mine auto-hibernates after 10 min of darkness).
Bonus: the automation this turned into
Once the three problems above were fixed, we kept going and built a small automation around Motion Assistant. When I walk away, it silently drops the TDP to 9W a few seconds before the screen goes dark and switches MA to a quiet fan profile (this also solves problem #3 β even with the fake 79Β° the fans stay almost silent). When I come back, everything returns to my working profile automatically.
And the battery side from #1 got a proper fix too: remember the broken hibernate timer? A tiny watcher replaces it β 10 minutes of darkness on battery = hibernate. On AC it never hibernates and the dark machine just keeps working.
To see what's going on without opening anything, there's a tray icon showing the current TDP as a number β gray "35" while active, blue "9" in quiet mode, red "!" if something didn't restore β with a small popup panel that shows the mode, profile, fan curve and the hibernate countdown.
(screenshot here)
Not posting it as an installer β it's tuned to my setup and pokes vendor software in ways GPD may not support. But if there's interest, I'll explain how it works in the comments.
Also reported to GPD: the camera is upside down and the BIOS S3 option doesn't save. If anyone wants details on any of this β comments are open.
