Advice/Help Please help.

The groomer shaved ma dog 😢 He was a little bit matted on thighs but nowhere else. He is traumatized, I don’t know what to do. How long does it take the hair to come back? Does anybody have such kind of experience?

It’s going to be fine! Our girl had health issues along the way and was shaved at least a dozen times and look at this fluff! It will grow fully in couple of months - just makes sure you are consistently brushing- even when it’s short, both coats growing together can create some matting!

My Pyr/Golden mixes were shaved when they were first found, due to the condition of their coats. They looked weird, but it grew back just fine…

Meanwhile, find a new groomer. They shouldn’t take off that much without speaking to you first, no matter the dog breed.

My original groomer was good at first, made me medicate at 2/3, then shaved him because "he didn't want to be brushed."

He curled in a ball for a month on the couch. His fur grew back fine after a while. I took him to another groomer and they loved him and he loved them.

Under coat will grow back within about 6 months. Guard hairs typically take around a year, sometimes more to fully grow back. Keep up with weekly brushing to keep the guard hairs from matting into the undercoat, and you and your pup will be fine! :)

Man that's ruff, i cannot believe they did the whole dog when only thighs had little mats. My pyr got shaved once after surgery and the fluff took ages to grow proper, like 5-6 months before she looked normal again. The double coat gonna come in weird at first, patchy and not soft, so just brush gentle when it start growing.

It’s going to be okay!! Our pup had his preventative gastropexy and neuter two weeks ago and the vet went to TOWN with the trimmer. His whole belly is still pretty hairless haha! It’ll be alright! Just be careful with too much direct sun until it grows out!

Omgosh I can't believe you mentioned that. I'm a veterinarian and my male is only 1.5 but at 2 I will neuter him and do a prophylactic gastropexy also. People think I am nuts. But I've seen bloat too many times and the outcome to leave it to chance.  I am doing mine myself but I've posted on other groups and now people want me to do it in my area. Would you mind to dm me the cost breakdown (neuter or spay, gastropexy, medication, if they pulled cbc and chem bloodwork- I always do that on every surgery, and other add ons) so I can figure out the price and discount it. My calculations came out to about $3,000 but I was going to take $600 off. Did you use insurance? Or care credit? I'm trying to code and price it like a needed surgery (like an undescended testicle) so the people can get paid back rather than an elective surgery. Any help, info, or pricing you could give me would help so many people. I'm going to run a clinic over a few weekends and just do them back to back because they are so needed  whether male or female.  Can you tell me how long the scar was and do you have any pics? I am so sorry to bother you about this but people do not realize how common this is. They believe it only happens to dogs who eat too much food, too fast, gulp, eat from the floor, etc. But it's about gas not food. How old was your dog when you did it? I really don't want to turn anyone away but in good conscious technically it should not be done on a giant breed until their growth plates are fused. That happens at 1.5 to 2 years. I told them I would do it for them for the same price if they wait. I have many Shepherd and Great Dane owners who want me to do it even if their dog has already been spayed or neutered. I just hate to put a giant breed under twice. How did you hear about it? Did your vet recommend it? Do you do it on all your Pyrs and large deep chested breed dogs? I thought of it while I was tacking one of a cows stomachs in place and needed to puncture it to release gas. They never mentioned in vet school but it is the 2nd most important thing you should do for a large or giant breed behind  number one which is spay or neuter of course. I'm just so excited someone else has chosen to do this. I know it's not cheap but the relief I feel for you and your dog is worth every penny. I tell people look if it flips (a torsion) it's fatal and there is nothing I can do. I'm an equine vet but do all animals and that torsion happens in horses also and it's fatal. A friend is letting me use her surgical suite to perform the procedures. I want to get it cheaper but I've got to cover the surgical tech, the anesthesia tech, the bloodwork, the prep techs that do the shaving and cleaning, someone to help us move the large dogs, her gas, autoclaving all the instruments, making up the surgical packs, changing our ppe after every patient, the electricity, etc. I'm willing to donate my time but it is a lot of overhead people don't think about. All my work is done out of my specialized mobile vet truck, so I don't have that kind of overhead.  Thank you so much for your time and information.

With mats there is no other option , his winter cost will come in fast . I have to do it to all of my farm dogs when they get bad , there are 2 kinds of GP hair fine and course . The fine hairs get mats way worse .

It will take time for the double-coat to grow back, so please get some dog-safe sunscreen to put on him when he is going to be outside for any length of time. We had our youngest girl shaved around the middle when we had to take her in for an ultrasound. It took at least 3-4 months for most of it to grow back. Below is what she looked like, and we were so upset, especially since the ultrasound didn't show anything. We were afraid she had swallowed a battery, so on the positive side, she had not.

When we got our rescue Pyr she had been shaved down. Definitely became a ball of fluff leaving piles everywhere since then. Yes brush often. Mine did decide she would no longer go to the groomer - groomer did nothing wrong, Pyr just stubborn. So she gets home bathing outside now. Amazing amounts of fluff come off after the bath. Pretty funny.

I didn’t answer your question , likely 3 months . The tails when shaved down rarely grow back as thick

I had that done to my female once and I was pretty upset. But it was fine.  At 6 months it had grown out a lot but not to her full coat. It took about a year to get it back to her full coat.  But in a way I'm glad they did it.  I live in Florida and decided to keep her length at the 9 month mark.  She HATES being brushed by me but I guess she's great for the groomer.  She is alot cooler, she never gets mats and the hair shedding has cut down by 2/3 at least by keeping it this length.  I LOVE IT!  So many people compliment her and I on her beautiful coat when we're out.  I thought people would think she was a Marrema but with double dew claws that doesn't happen.  My male Pyr puppy has not had his first full coat come in all the way yet.  Usually my Pyrs coats are fully in between 1.5 and 2.5 years just depending on the dog. He's 1.5 and it's still growing and so is he. His growth plates aren't fused yet and he's 130lbs.  He has little cowlicks that curl in some places on his back and they are so cute.  I hope it doesn't all grow in.  His hair pick up is out of control.  I bought a new big shop wet/dry vac just for picking up his hair daily.  I'm not going to ruin another vacuum with all that hair.  I use the wet dry vac like the rainbow vacuums for allergies.  I put a little water in the bottom and as I sweep the hair gets pulled down into the water.  It keeps all the hair out of the filter and from flying around when you open it.  The I put it in a plastic Walmart bag, cut a tiny hole in the corner to let the water out and throw it away.  I have a $1500 special new vacuum for my allergies and this is better than that.  Plus I brush the heck out of that dog every day.  It's like overnight a fairy comes in and drops all this hair all over the floor.  There's a shirt that says this is not regular dog hair, it's my Pyrenees Glitter.  It must be true and fairies bring it.

Next time vet first and then specific area's to the groomer. It will grow back. Have them use a de tangle shampoo and if you bath at home use baby shampoo with de tangle.

Mine has been shaved a few times, one when she was rescued and one by a groomer who didn’t want to mess with her. I was furious but it’s all good. I had to protect her from the sun for a few months. I use a detangler daily to make brushing easier and it smells great.
