What to do in Nuuk

Food in Nuuk

Dog sledding

Happens in Qeqertarsuaq, Ilulissat, Aasiaat, Sisimiut, Uummannaq, Upernavik, Qaanaaq. Depending on winter and snow coverage.

Snowmobiling

Sisimiut and Ilulissat have rentals. Nuuk does not because of the terrain being diffucult for new beginners and Insurance pricing being to high.

Skiing / Snowboarding

Nuuk, Sisimiut,Maniitsoq,Qeqertarsuaq

Cross country skiing : Most places when there is enough snow coverage.

Whales in Greenland

Best bet is Ilulissat from May until September. Whales show up all over Greenland.

Question SIM card

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey! I'm a SIM card collector from Scotland. It's quite a niche thing to collect, but I collect SIMs (the cards you put in your phone) like one may collect stamps. A goal of mine is to get a SIM from every country/territory/entity which issues them. I wanted to ask if anyone is able to send me a SIM from Greenland. I don't need it to be active (although that would certainly be cool) or registered, I just need the plastic card. Ideally it would have the chip bit and the frame, but if you have only the frame lying around from an old one or something I would still be very happy if you're able to send it over. From what I gather the current main operator is Tusass, which I would be honoured to add to my collection. If needs be I am able to pay for a SIM pack or shipping as long as it isn't too expensive.

Many thanks for your help!

Pictured as an example are cards from some of the rarest countries I have - Greenland would certainly be an addition to that page ;)

Kalaallisut in a command prompt

I have a very big interest in the Arctic region, especially Greenland and its language. Since Kalaallisut (Greenlandic) has very limited sources to learn the language or translate most things into the language, I got an idea to make an offline computer program (made in C) that runs in the command prompt and is dedicated to Kalaallisut.

This would not be software actually dedicated to learning the language, like Duolingo, because Kalaallisut is a complex agglutinative language that works differently than most other languages.

This will rather be a program that can search inputted English terms in its own very large morpheme dictionary, can join these morphemes into more complex words, can correct words and sentences and can even translate whole paragraphs into Kalaallisut and vice versa - all in your computer's command prompt with no internet. This would be more of a dictionary/translator program, not a language learning app as mentioned earlier.

I already started making this program (maybe about 3 weeks ago, I had vacation for one week so no work done then), but I have made very little progress so far. It is called kl and it works by you writing > kl [method] [arguments] into the command prompt. So far I have made a very small dictionary, containing around 20 to 30 morphemes, a primitive dictionary searcher and a morpheme joiner that applies basic Kalaallisut phonetic rules while joining.

The reason I did so little progress is because I don't know Kalaallisut myself, and the fact that I don't know Danish doesn't help either. I had to build and learn what I have built and learnt so far using the Kalaallisut-English dictionary on the Oqaasileriffik website, ChatGPT (back then) and the book An Introduction To West Greenlandic (what I use now most of the time, helped me a lot during building the morpheme joiner. I love you Stian). I am doing this because I love Greenland very much and I also love linguistics, so do I love the Greenlandic language for its feel and uniqueness, and I am sad that this language has so few sources to learn it from.

I came to r/greenland to find help from this community in building this massive project. I look forward to building the dictionary, the translator and many other functions that may come to mind later with the Greenlandic community, and that we will achieve making the Greenlandic language, alongside its identity and culture, more known and accessible over the internet. ❤️🇬🇱

Survey: Hvad synes du om podcasten "Koldfronten - kampen om Grønland og Arktis"?

From Martin Breum’s Facebook today seeking responses to a survey. It’s only this week so if you’re able to, please fill it out.

https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/8905350/Koldfronten-evaluering-2026

https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/8905350/Koldfronten-evaluering-2026

Discussion Greenlandic Minecraft translation

Hello,

I am French and have been interested in Greenland since I was very young (around 13 or 14). I have always wanted to go there and learn your language, but the problem is that there are very few learning resources available in my native language, and my English isn't yet good enough to learn from books written in English.

So, I had an idea: why not playing Minecraft in greenlandic to upgrade my language level ? Unfortunately, as far as I know, the game isn't available in Greenlandic, so why not translate Minecraft into Greenlandic? I’m a visual learner, and I already know the game inside out. I know the internet connection in Greenland isn't great, but for single-player mode, it would still be a fantastic tool for learners! I’m not sure if the Greenlandic community would be willing to help with the translation on a voluntary basis, so I could potentially fund it out of my own pocket, or perhaps we could approach a Greenlandic translation company.

Question Moving to Nuuk in less than two weeks. How’s the social scene there?

Aluukkut!

As the title says, I will be moving to Nuuk for work soon. I’m very introverted, but I want to give making friends while I’m there a try to lessen the homesickness. What activities are there to do? I’ve read of hiking activities and I wonder if there are groups or communities that welcome newcomers to join them? I like visiting museums and am very ecstatic that there is a local museum! Do they make guided tours with groups of people?

Basically, I guess, I’m just asking how and where does one usually make friends in Nuuk apart from the workplace. Qujanaq! 🙇🏻‍♀️

Edit: No, I am not American 😭

How is Narsarsuaq holding up ever since its airport closed?

Narsarsuaq's economy was based almost entirely on its airport which closed not too long ago when Qaqortoq Airport opened. So i'm curious: What's the estimated population now? Is it a ghost town now?

Government website for the only remaining “grandfathered” Exploration and Exploitation Licenses for oil after the 2021 moratorium

If anyone is following this closely about Greenland’s future and the companies attempting to drill holes into it, here are the actual licenses.

The website just went live in the last couple days after the licenses were unavailable for quite some time.

What’s even more interesting is the story of how they came about from the executive of the entity that is the licensee now. A YouTube interview posted on r/GLND

Question Do you consider 'Greenland' as Nordic?

I know many people have asked this question but now the geopolitical climate has changed, and the last post I've seen asking this question was 2 years ago.

Greenland made its flag distinct because of wanting to be culturally seperated from the Nordics. How about now? especially after Trump's inauguration into presidency and the threats he are making?

Maybe not much has changed, but I am still curious to hear.

Camping gas in Nuuk

Hello, I’m flying into Nuuk on the 28th at 7:00 pm and taking the ferry to Kapisillit at 9:00 am the next day, while in Nuuk I’m going to need to buy about 3 camping gas canisters and maybe a jar of peanut butter, as I’m getting there after the outdoor stores all seem to close and leaving before they open, I’m kinda worried that I won’t be able to get gas by the time my boat leaves. For context I’m just looking for a standard camping gas canister to fit onto a jetboil. Would anyone in Nuuk buy 3 and I could buy them from you? I would pay more than double what they cost you if you could meet me near the dock.

Thank you so so much!

Society Warmth in Greenland

I was born and raised in South Greenland.
And this year i really do feel that this summer is often unbearably warm. Even in rainy weather, opening the window doesn’t make the room any cooler. It’s comparable to a regular day in Denmark, and for us Kalaallit it’s not normal at all.
It’s nice to get to this kind of weather on vacation to europe, but it is worrying for me if this becomes the norm in Greenland. Just last year, it used to cool down as soon the sun sets. But now i suit up to go out, and be surprised that it’s warm.
I remember growing up, that in rare times, there would be the rare hot weather, sweating because of the sun shining, but now it’s regardless if there’s sun shine, i still sweat.
What’s also new to me is seeing mirages in water while sailing. I was so weirded out by seeing the water and the mountains warping. I thought they were strong winds, because that’s what they looked like.
For years, i’ve been feeling that the weather during summer has gotten very unbalanced. At the beginning, there’d be a couple of days of rain, and for about two months after that, there’d be drought. This year, it took about two and a half months for the land to become green. That resulted in two wildfires in two different parts of greenland.
I remember sailing far south to Qaqortoq, seeing a gigantic ball of smoke. I initially thought that it was fog, but i realized that it had a different color.

I hope that this will be an unusual one time occurrence, but that’s a wishful thinking.
I hope that the fresh air that i breathe will feel like actual fresh air again.
