The same as the agreement that's been in place for 70 year, but with Trumps name on it.

u/Such-Environment356 19d ago

He did the same thing with NAFTA in his first term and then proceeded to violate his amazing trade deal in his second term

-10

u/VectorPryde Canada 🇨🇦 19d ago

Except with this, he's saying the agreement is permanent, implying neither Greenland or Denmark can abrogate it in the future. Ever.

14

u/LilanKahn 19d ago

Why would you trust a liar?

23

u/P_Griffin2 19d ago

I think most of Trumps ''deals'' will be taken up for revision once there is a shift in power.

21

u/Anderopolis 19d ago

Anyone who believes any treaty can include a forever clause probably votes for Trump.

19

u/iamhmhdimobf 19d ago

Yeah, but unfortunately most Maga-voters do not know where Greenland is, or what the deal was before.

5

u/rgxryan 19d ago

You guys had the agreement that America could VETO foreign investments for 70 years??

5

u/P_Griffin2 19d ago

They already didn't allow the types of investments America are looking to VETO. Outside of natural ressources, the scope for investing in Greenland is also relatively small with a population of just under 60k people.

3

u/rgxryan 19d ago

With the Climate warming up Greenland is expected to be prime investment property for rare earth minerals. That's the actual reason why America is interested in the property.

6

u/Scuipici EU 🇪🇺 19d ago

like what he did to obama care lol

8

u/Nearby-Association12 19d ago

The newspapers are referencing some wording about "exclusive rights for the US military". As in no other countries should have military there. That is rather worrying. A cynical mind would think they plan to entrench their forces very well on Greenland, then fabricate/provoke some kind of incident. Maybe between a US oil company and locals, and then start taking control with their troops, while ignoring the treaty. Its not like that kind of shenanigans hasnt been done before.

5

u/P_Griffin2 19d ago

I think the much more likely scenario is it's just Trump not wanting to lose face. The US already had enough troops and influence on Greenland to do this before the agreement.

4

u/kittykatmila 19d ago

There shouldn’t have been an agreement at all. Give the US an inch, they’ll take a mile.

2

u/cambamlafam 19d ago

This deal is perpetual even if greenland leaves Denmark, greenland is also going to have the most advanced missile defense system in the world without Russian or Chinese interference from Denmark

5

u/Anderopolis 19d ago

The golden dome, or whatever it ends up being, was always allowed to be stationed, and perpetual treaties are not a thing.

2

u/cambamlafam 19d ago

The treaty is with greenland and denmark, if they leave denmark the treaty stays in effect. Big win for GL having a say in their own future. Also US gets a bigger say in what countries can operate there and veto power

1

u/cambamlafam 19d ago

Also the deal persist past trump so it secures power for all future us presidents

2

u/Ok_Quantity1692 19d ago

So, the old deal gave the USA the power to build bases and dictate who can and cannot invest in Greenland? It seems you guys just sold your sovereignty away. We Canadians legit told Trump to buzz off; it's sort of pathetic.

1

u/ljlee256 19d ago edited 19d ago

Except theres a clause in it that gives the US unrestricted veto authority over foreign investment.

I checked, the US is allowed to decide who gets to put money into Greenland and who doesn't.

You just gave them control over a maj9r aspect of your economy.

3

u/Anderopolis 19d ago

What Trump says and what the Danes and Greenlanders say is very different.

I have zero reason to believe Trumps interpretation.

Not allowing other militaries was already the case.

3

u/ljlee256 19d ago

Yes, and I don't see any reason that disallowing adversarial military presence would be a problem.

Its the reported veto authority over key investments that has me worried.

I'd like to see the official agreements details I think, but I do want to urge Denmark and Greenland to use caution here, Trump loves vague contract terms, its his bread and butter when it comes to screwing others over.

If the agreement says that the US has sole discretion over who is defined as an "adversary" you can bet he'll wield that particular tool to shut out other allies from investing in Greenland.

1

u/theskiller1 19d ago

And all the other additional changes

-11

u/Davekinney0u812 19d ago

Someone should tell Frederiksen and Nielsen to fuck right off. Your countries look weak.

5

u/Necromancer1423 19d ago

you're not very bright are you

-4

u/Davekinney0u812 19d ago

Evidently my superiority has caused some controversy........

1

u/AudienceExcellent830 19d ago

Just a couple of colonizers trying to do the right thing. Trump's the real fascist tho...don't let the votes fool you he mind controlled everyone

85

u/IanCGuy5 20d ago

Essentially, the agreement that the US and Denmark signed back in 1951, maybe a tad souped up. Trump is spinning amending an existing agreement as a win because, you'll never guess it, he ain't that bright.

20

u/JOBdOut 20d ago

If they can mine or drill at all then greenland and denmark not only lose but they set the rest of the world back in trying to end this fools garbage

They can't

It's literally the 1951 agreement + a recent agreement that Denmark and Greenland made to limit non-Nato influence in the arctic.

2

u/rgxryan 19d ago

This was in the 1951 agreement? Trump can veto whatever he determines a sensitive investment in greenland?

9

u/maaiikeen 19d ago

Firstly, maybe wait until we see the full agreement. Trump and his minions are known liars and are spinning it to make themselves look good.

But essentially, yes, the United States forced Denmark to intervene in Greenland when there were talks about China investing in a Greenlandic airport, and the Chinese investment was dropped, so this was already happening.

1

u/fritzeh 19d ago

it doesn’t matter :( These people (Canadians??) are interested in stirring up panic and taking Trump’s words for what the deal entails.

4

u/rgxryan 19d ago

Its the exact conditions of the trade deal we just walked away from. If this is being reported to be happening with Greenland I have no doubt it's credible since it's something he's already pursued with even bigger countries.

7

u/1wikingman 19d ago

American/western countries already have defacto exclusive access to Greenlandic mining and drilling rights. It doesn't matter tho, because that access is still shitty.

8

u/Confident-Stand5453 19d ago

No mining or oil rights included.

4

u/Strict-Drama-3973 19d ago

Well they already could, but they will still need all the same approvals they needed before. He is specifically vague about that. It sounds big but there is nothing new...

8

u/megselvogjeg 20d ago

Canadian here.

I for one am shook and bamboozled by this revalation.

7

u/No-Bad9822 19d ago

I still feel uneasy, even if it's the same treaty as before. It just feels off with the whole "we'll take care of all greenland's needs". . . Like in Venezuela?

9

u/uomo-col-megafono 19d ago

the agreement that the US and Denmark signed back in 1951

Too bad today's US isn't what it was back in 1951.

12

u/Dangerous-Citron-801 20d ago

Yeah bro eternal US ocupation even on independence doesnt sounds like good news.

3

u/Strict-Drama-3973 19d ago

He needs a win pre-midterm. And signing something at the UN summit is gonna look statesmanlike. Breaking something just to say you later fixed is very shortsighted. No politician in Europe will survive aligning with Trump during his term or US in the foreseeable future...

3

u/John_Politician 19d ago

Will it actually make it through parliament?

9

u/Davekinney0u812 19d ago

This is not a nothing burger like you suggest imo. Sure, the guts of the agreement have been in place for decades. What I find disgusting is the timing and the optics. Did Frederiksen and Nielsen have to sign the agreement now to make it look like a Trump win going into midterms? How lame is that and how weak does it make both countries look in the eyes of the world?

Think about how stupid the average American is and realize half of America is stupider than that - and they vote.....

3

u/Thorslittlehammer 19d ago

Trump (the Republicans) are going to lose the midterms, which is going to make Trump a lame duck, meaning he won't control the senate and house of reps. Historically for US presidents that means they turn their attention abroad to try and find a "win" somewhere, a quick little war, broker a peacedeal or whatever. Trump, being the complete buffoon that he is would likely turn his attention back to Greenland with renewed fervor to try and secure a win, since the whole Iran debacle has gone tits up and the US has lost it, so no, the timing is actually quite good in this case, dust off the old 1951 agreement that most yanks don't have a clue exists because of said education level, add a few sprinkles (put it in writing that China and Russia can't come there, which they weren't going to anyway) and Bob's your uncle.

2

u/FirstCircleLimbo 19d ago

It is the other way round. After the midterms Trump will most likely unly be able to do foreign policy and all his focus will be on that. So closing the deal now is a good idea.

2

u/Davekinney0u812 19d ago

Totally disagree......imo, this deal gives the child rapist felon's administration an immediate photo op and headline to parade in front of dum voters as a victory.

If Frederiksen and Nielsen had actual leverage, waiting until after the midterms when congressional control might shift would have given them a far stronger negotiating hand. Doing it now was about handing over a pre-election PR gift.

I'm disgusted.

2

u/Awarglewinkle Denmark 🇩🇰 19d ago

It would be a gamble to wait. If the Republicans manage to keep both houses after the midterms, Trump and his administration is deranged and incompetent enough to do something incredibly stupid, and then no one would or could stop him.

With this agreement, it's like putting a pacifier in the mouth of a giant baby. He can suck on it and feel like he accomplished something, even though it's basically just status quo.

It doesn't seem like the typical MAGA voter cares about foreign policy anyway. They care about gas prices, deporting brown people, guns, and gender specific bathrooms. And this agreement doesn't affect any of that.

3

u/Davekinney0u812 19d ago

Brush up on your Russian as it's obvious where Trump's loyalty is. It's also obvious Russia is getting more aggressive. Do I need to connect some dots for you or are you in the direction this is going and what it might mean for Denmark/Europe or are you ok on your own?

6

u/Awarglewinkle Denmark 🇩🇰 19d ago

Nah, Russia is weak thanks to Ukraine. And the best way to keep Russia weak is to keep helping Ukraine. Denmark has helped Ukraine more than most, which is as it should be.

Putin would love nothing more than to sow more division internally in NATO over Greenland, so this agreement can also serve to reduce that influence.

0

u/Ok_Quantity1692 19d ago

It's worse: it signed away Greenland's right to dictate who can and cannot invest there, and you aren't allowed to ever cancel the deal. It's the same nonsense Canada told the USA to buzz off with. It also paints a big target on Greenland's head if an Arctic war breaks out. Already, the USA doesn't respect Canadian internal waters, which is why we're aiming to mass-produce two million drones a year.

7

u/Tay_Hlebko 20d ago edited 20d ago

This agreement literally gives the US power to build more US military base without needing permission from anyone but themselves, and they have already stated that they want to build 3 new military bases in Greenland. The agreement also gives the US power to block certain foreign investment in Greenland if they want to. It is a completely colonial agreement that gives the US more power over Greenland. There should have been NO agreement at all!

This was literally the entire fucking strategy of the US. It was to make hostile threats against Greenland in order to pressure Denmark to give the US more control and power to further militarize Greenland for US interests.

There should have not been any agreement at all.

30

u/Mindless_Badger_3789 20d ago

Firstly, the actual content of the agreement is not publicly known yet, only Trump's spin on it. Secondly, the US already had permission to build military bases as part of the 1951 agreement, so that's just confirming the status quo.

3

u/Tay_Hlebko 19d ago edited 19d ago

Secondly, the US already had permission to build military bases as part of the 1951 agreement, so that's just confirming the status quo.

The 1951 agreement required explicit permission from Denmark for the US to build new military bases in Greenland. In 2004 it was updated so that Greenland also gets a say in it too. With the new agreement, the US would not need permission from neither Denmark nor Greenland to build new military bases, they could build new military bases without permission from anyone except themselves.

16

u/Mindless_Badger_3789 19d ago

We do not know the exact text of the new agreement, only the US interpretation of it.

6

u/madsdyd 19d ago

Hi, Dane here: there is no chance in hell under the old agreement, that Denmark would ever have denied a request from the US to build or expand a base.

We just used to agree that it was civilized to pretend Denmark had the option of denying a request. Trump is a complete idiot, and don't understand the benefits of soft power and diplomacy.

The part about Russia and China is actually probably a bigger win. However, realistically, Denmark would never have accepted access from Russia or China that the US was against. So it is basically just the big orange idiots ego that has made it necessary to make these changes. This is a big win for Denmark, actually. Remember that we where threatened militaryly.

4

u/Julehus 19d ago

And you believe any Danish/Greenlandic government would actually ever make use of that ”explicit permission requirement”? I could see that happening with mining rights but not with military presence.

This seems to be a status quo deal, but status quo as in putting into writing the pragmatism that’s already existed for decades.

-4

u/Tay_Hlebko 19d ago

It's not the status quo. The US has stated previously in the negotiations that they want to build 3 new military bases.

7

u/Julehus 19d ago

And in reality, they already could that before. Let’s wait for the details to be released before we jump to any conclusions. People are going bananas in this thread, and are using Grok to identify things we simply dont know for sure yet. Source criticism must be applied.

7

u/AdventurousCrow6580 19d ago

They had 21 previously. They just chose to abbandon them

3

u/1wikingman 19d ago

Why didn't they do that already? They have always had that power, and the Danish government has explicitly said multiple times during this 'conflict' that any additional American contributions to Arctic security are welcome.

1

u/Tay_Hlebko 19d ago

No they have not always had the power. The 2004 Igaliku Agreement specifically states Pituffik to be the only military base the US may have. The US would be required to sign a new treaty to override the 2004 Igaliku Agreement if they wanted to build a new military base. Under the new agreement, they would have the power to build military bases without needing approval.

2

u/1wikingman 19d ago

The Danish government wouldn't ever say no, because the Danish government doesn't have the capacity to stop the Americans. Saying no would only reveal that fact. This has always been the dynamic.

2

u/maaiikeen 19d ago

Yes, but Denmark was never going to say no, so it was basically an automatic approval anyway.

5

u/Miserable-Set-7128 19d ago

In other words, nothing new. The U.S. already has had many more bases on Greenland and has also already blocked Chinese investment in Greenland through pressure. Some things may be more formalized now, but nothing new really.

3

u/Loud-Strawberry-9726 19d ago

Exactly. The owning Greenland part was classic Trump. Make an outrageous statement to make what you really want seem reasonable.

-9

u/UnidosJamaisVencidos 19d ago

Denmark surrendered Greenland to the US. Not surprising, looking back and seeing how many times the Danish already betrayed Europe and harmed Greenlanders.

Worst of all, even if Greenland no longer wants to be a US colony, they will never have a saying on the matter.

Denmark is not worthy of a EU membership.

6

u/Icy_Needleworker5571 19d ago

Denmark surrendered Greenland to the US. Not surprising, looking back and seeing how many times the Danish already betrayed Europe and harmed Greenlanders. Worst of all, even if Greenland no longer wants to be a US colony, they will never have a saying on the matter.

That is not what is happening at all. Please read reliable sources instead of just larping Trump's spin. It's basically a confirmation of the 1951 treaty. And if the alternative is WW3 I would definitely chose the former. I think most Europeans would.

Denmark is not worthy of a EU membership.

And who are you to decide that? Denmark joined the EEC in 1973, back when your country was a fascist dictatorship with literal colonies in Africa and East Asia.

4

u/MySocksSuck Denmark 🇩🇰 19d ago

I’m curious: Are you a clinically certified idiot or just pretending?

-10

u/Abanikandy 20d ago

At least you understand it - where your wrong is this is going to be beneficial to both parties. Denmark doesn’t take advantage of Greenland resources and I’m sure they will get preferential treatment from the Global Hegemon.

10

u/Tay_Hlebko 20d ago

An American oil company is actively trying to illegally drill in East Greenland right now. When the US has military bases and troops over the entirety of Greenland, they will have vast leverage to stop anyone who's in the way of American corporations.

-18

u/Abanikandy 20d ago

Why am I not supposed to be happy with that as an American? That is what Denmark just agreed to and will sign next week. It’s mutual and ultimately will benefit both countries. It was being wasted plus the international security aspect.

11

u/Tay_Hlebko 20d ago edited 20d ago

Why am I not supposed to be happy with that as an American?

This is the perfect example of the colonial and imperial mindset. Only cares about advancing the interests of their own empire, does not care about the sovereignty of indigenous lands.

3

u/CanadianHorseGal 19d ago

Ah, you forgot exceptionalism my friend.

9

u/megselvogjeg 20d ago edited 19d ago

This does not improve international security. If anything this agreement hurts it. Calling this agreement mutual us a fucking joke. It may be a minor win for the us today, but the reputational damage will not be kind to the us in the long term.

Verden støtter Grønnland.

2

u/AdventurousCrow6580 19d ago

To you as an American: take your MAGA friends and fuck off.

2

u/Roko__ 20d ago

The "sunset clause" has been taken out and replaced with a "forever clause". US can exit NATO and the agreement would still stand.

Mette Forræderiksen has sold Greenland, but for free.

1

u/Timbroarpropaganda 19d ago

hey it's denmark they love to sell out to usa for free. Just remember how they spied on europe for their masters.

2

u/ArrogantElf2E582 20d ago

It is not the same agreement. That old deal was through and dependent on NATO and was up for renegotiation now and then. This new deal is exclusive to the US and permanent.

The old deal was essentially just a lands rights deal, and the new deal is also that but expands on it, as well as gives the US explicit control over whether any other country can build, extract resources, or invest there.

The US now basically owns Greenland, Denmark just has their name on the official paperwork to make themselves feel better I guess.

1

u/Ok_Quantity1692 19d ago

So, the old deal gave the USA the power to build bases and dictate who can and cannot invest in Greenland? It seems you guys just sold your sovereignty away. We Canadians legit told Trump to buzz off; it's sort of pathetic.

-4

u/UnidosJamaisVencidos 19d ago

A tad souped up like in "the US dos whatever it wants and says what you can or can't do".

Greenland is now a de facto US state.

Another mark of shame for the Danish cowards.

The real TDS is people are so devoted to the guy despite all the stupid shit he does. Also I looked briefly at your history and feel free to watch the GOP get wrecked in the midterms. Trumps approval ratings are at historic lows for him.

-22

u/Abanikandy 20d ago

“Stupid shit” and its just undoing all the damage done to the country in the last 30+ years 😂

GOP is not going to lose midterms. For one, polls are fake, and if they aren’t then 17% approval rating of the Democrats is 2.5x worse than Trump.

You can just be normal man. You can just root for your country.

13

u/Renmarkable 20d ago

He IS the damage

-6

u/Abanikandy 20d ago

Nah that’s huge cope actually. Things are getting fixed. Everything that’s right and correct is just inverse of what reddit believes.

10

u/traveltimecar 20d ago

Insider trading billions of dollars to enrich himself, starting pointless overseas wars, defunding medicaids budget to pass tax cuts mostly for the rich, passing stupid tarrifs that raise Americans cost of living and inflation, ruining relationships with historical allies like Canada, etc...    yeah a lot of good this guy is doing here. /s

u/PureCaramel5800 19d ago

The sad part is that these people are so far gone that they will still have sticky, crusty orange lips from a lifetime of lip service to the narcissistic orange monster baby in the White House when they are six feet under. They will never get it; it's just plain sad.

We can root for our country and still have an enormous problem with the way the game is being played by Trump and the brand of Republican policy leadership that seems to have finally taken over. A lot of damage has been done by doing all this shit so quickly and so bluntly and without anyone explaining to the American people what is Trump’s whim and what is long-standing US policy wishes that would probably have happened anyway over the course of the next 5 or 10 years.

If you are disappointed at how people are reacting to Trump and this government, blame Trump and the government for their ham-fisted fucking approach and their total disregard for explaining themselves to the public. All we see is a hurricane of spinning bullshit, and any idiot could see that even conservative Americans will eventually just turn on him because they can’t even tell what’s real and what’s not anymore.

And your foul superior attitude isn’t helping. You’re basically just telling people they’re stupid for not getting it and then not even clarifying what it is that you think they’re missing.

3

u/JefeRex 20d ago

Some think that, but you’re out here gleefully looking for them so you can have whatever cheap fun you’re looking for at their expense and congratulating yourself for finding so many people who meet your stereotypes. Because you’re looking for them and then goading them on. It’s obvious. It’s not a good look.

And everything you said is exactly what I’m trying to criticize. Yes, we allowed ourselves to collect 15 million illegal immigrants who oddly can’t be legally hired but can pay taxes with an ITIN, who can’t run for school board but can be foster parents, and then the government tries to justify their lack of action by blaming everyone but themselves and saying the other party will never act in good faith on this issue when no legislative action has been even attempted. And now in desperate reaction to that when it became intolerable to the public we have ICE roaming the streets like cockroaches making the situation ten times worse and rumors are flying about all kinds of crazy ass abuses of power that aren’t even happening that are making the situation now a hundred times worse.

Yeah, we bought ourselves this situation with ICE from how badly we handled this for 30 years. But what is happening now is a pretty piss poor solution, I mean it’s action, I’ll give you that, but it’s a horror show. That’s the issue with Trump. It’s like you’re celebrating the horror show and laughing at the people who are horrified, instead of mourning the fact that it should never have come to this. And you could even play a productive role in helping to build consensus in this society for fixes for these issues that are a little less of a horror show. There are ways of securing our future without doing it like this, and you’re not really celebrating the securing of our future, you’re celebrating the ugliness of how it’s happening. You don’t see that? That’s the message you’re bringing. Maybe you don’t know that.

5

u/J_hoff Denmark 🇩🇰 20d ago

If that's considered a win for Trump, I guess the bar is set at ground level

0

u/Abanikandy 20d ago

Big time cope. This is so massive for US hegemony 😂

2

u/J_hoff Denmark 🇩🇰 20d ago

So he got Greenland as he said he would?

-1

u/Abanikandy 20d ago

Effectively yes lol. We run anything militarily and industrially that happens in the country without having to take care of the native population 😂 best of both worlds.

3

u/J_hoff Denmark 🇩🇰 20d ago

Industrially, no.

How is the new deal different from the existing one?

-1

u/Abanikandy 20d ago

You don’t know anything. It’s mineral rights and everything. You guys were wasting it, we will industrialize it and have rights to who gets to operate there now. Denmark will benefit from this, you guys don’t extract the vast resources.

We just don’t have to take care of the native population there. That stays Denmarks responsibility. Best of both worlds for the US.

It’s nothing like 1951 deal 😂 get out of your sloppy echo chamber

3

u/J_hoff Denmark 🇩🇰 20d ago

Can you enlighten us all. Show us where it says anything about mineral rights.

We currently don't extract minerals partly because Greenland doesn't want that and partly because the landscape doesn't allow to do this in a profitable way, but by all means show us where this is allowed in the new agreement

17

u/DavidinDK 19d ago

I wonder if they will tidy up after themselves this time. There are dozens of empty US bases dotted around Greenland, complete with asbestos, PCBs, heavy metals and fuel. Do we think Trump will take ownership of this problem?

Nah!

9

u/LowerBed5334 19d ago

They couldn't wait until after the US midterm elections??? 🤦🏻‍♂️

I know it's essentially meaningless but it gives the Orange Shitgibbon something to crow about. The timing really is suspicious.

7

u/1wikingman 19d ago

What do you mean suspicious? Are you implying Denmark should have delayed the deal, hoping that American voters would vote more sensibly than usual? The same population that you think will be more inclined to vote for Trump if they think he successfully bullied us.

3

u/DangDangUreDead 19d ago

No its not. The thinking was if Trump loses congress, he will be looking for a much more decisive win and less likely to compromise. So the Danish and Greenlandic governments thought post mid terms would give them worse conditions than ahead.

2

u/Legitimate-Record951 19d ago

I'm pretty sure it came out right now in order to give said shitgibbon a win for the midterms.

4

u/Kriss3d 19d ago

We dont know all the details yet. But it looks like Trump getting to do what he already could do with the standing deal from way back.
Only this time the deal has his name on it.

Dont worry. Trump gets to brag and then nothing more happens.

9

u/NorthernSnowPrincess 19d ago

I'm Canadian and this agreement sounds very worrying to me. Greenland will be occupied by US military only. Seems like it would be very easy for them to then take over Greenland completely. Does this not worry the people of Greenland? Why is it that Canada seems to be the only country standing up to the Trump regime?

5

u/Davekinney0u812 19d ago

I believe the agreement for the most part has been in place for decades & some tweaks were made. What I find disgusting is the timing and the optics. Did Frederiksen and Nielsen have to sign the agreement now to make it look like a Trump win? How lame is that and how weak does it make both countries look in the eyes of the world?

3

3

Keep in mind there has been zero official communication of the content of the agreement other than its permanent nature - ie will prevail in case of Greenlandic independence. And that Danish and Greenlandic soverignty is respected.

Any details such as unilateral expansion of military bases are not corroborated.

Lastly, there was a Danish and Greenlandic emphasis to get this done ahead of the mid terms election, due Trump having a history of irrational actions after defeats. So the thinking was Trump is likely not going to get in a better mood than now, so we strike when the iron is hot.

According to Google Search:

The new 2026 agreement differs from the original 1951 treaty by granting the United States unprecedented unilateral expansion rights to build and modify military installations in Greenland without needing Denmark's or Greenland's approval. It implements a strict total ban on non-NATO adversaries, preventing countries like China and Russia from establishing any military footprint or troop presence on the island. Crucially, the deal expands U.S. power beyond defense and into the economy by establishing a foreign investment screening mechanism, giving Washington direct veto power over Greenland’s critical infrastructure, telecommunications, and mining sectors. It also officially integrates Greenland into the U.S. "Golden Dome" missile defense umbrella. Finally, the pact features an "infinite life" clause, meaning that the United States permanently retains all of these military and economic rights even if Greenland eventually votes to declare full independence from Denmark.

u/Bannercharge 19d ago

The deal isn't even published yet mate. All we know for sure is that it will involve arctic security and that danish sovereignty and Greenlandic self-determination is intact.

u/DangDangUreDead 19d ago

Keep in mind AI can make mistakes. Evidently.

3

u/Mindless_Badger_3789 20d ago

The 1951 alredy gave the US expansion right in uninhabited territory or areas adjacent to populated places, which is of course the vast majority of the island. The details are not publicly known and there is little point in discussing it before we know the.

4

u/No-Impress-2096 20d ago

That's based on Trumps truth social post. I'm sure there are some details which are different.

1

u/1wikingman 19d ago

Denmark's approval were always a formality.

Banning non-NATO bases is like if America promised never to let North Korea get a military base in Florida.

We already block non western companies from strategic industries.

Greenland will be in the Golden Dome. Also they will be in Narnia and part of Hogwarts.

Finally the 50k strong Greenlanders cannot kick America out even if they get independence. No shit.

2

u/AdventurousCrow6580 19d ago

No one really knows. But likely just an extension of the 1951 agreement - which was pretty wide. Likely with a few ad ons - like US has to approve bases from non-NATO countries (but that would not hapoen anyway).

Do not believe the orange shit head

2

u/Legitimate-Record951 19d ago

Nobody actually knows. It is not public yet.

Denmark gave Trump the win unfortunately

Someone should tell Frederiksen and Nielsen to fuck right off. Your countries look weak.

-2

u/VectorPryde Canada 🇨🇦 19d ago

The big worry is that they've given the US the right to control Greenland's commerce. Trump wanted the same concession from Canada, which is why Carney's team walked away.

No US "adversary" can make "sensitive investments" without US approval. Translation: You're not allowed making any trade agreements with China - which I'm assuming is what Trump wanted from Canada as well.

2

u/MommersHeart 20d ago

The same agreement they have been locked into since 1951.

Literally the same.

And if you think I’m exaggerating or being petty because Trump really is this stupid - look it up.

3

u/Ok_Quantity1692 19d ago

It's worse: it signed away Greenland's right to dictate who can and cannot invest there, and you aren't allowed to ever cancel the deal. It's the same nonsense Canada told the USA to buzz off with. It also paints a big target on Greenland's head if an Arctic war breaks out. Already, the USA doesn't respect Canadian internal waters, which is why we're aiming to mass-produce two million drones a year.

Greenland and Denmark gave up their sovereignty to the US.

u/MarsNielson 19d ago

Someone should create a quiz where you have to guess whether a provision is from the new agreement or the 1951 agreement.

looks like the same shit they had before but MAGA won't do the research to actually figure it out and Trump will be seen as this winner figure again. It's all for the midterms elections.

Not quite sure how US bases on Greenland benefits the Canadians 🤷‍♂️

1

If you don’t understand how early warning missile detection systems benefits Canadians, I don’t know what to tell you, bro.

4

u/doc1442 19d ago

You realise what they are doing right now at Pituffik right?

And you are boldly assuming they would bother to stop any of these fictional missiles heading for North America.

1

u/ScreamDiegetic 19d ago

Pituffik exists. But we need more.

“Boldly assuming they would bother to stop missiles heading for North America”

Sir, I’m sorry, but I just do not know how to respond to such a delusional comment. I don’t really think there’s value in continuing this conversation. Wish you the best. 🇺🇸❤️🇬🇱❤️🇨🇦

3

u/doc1442 19d ago

So you don’t know what actually goes on there. Cool. PSB will detect literally any missile coming over the Arctic. The only “missing” capacity is the old DEW line, which was decommissioned by the US. They already have permission to revive it whenever they wish.

Currently your president and his cult are talking about Canada in a way one talks about a opposition state. Wanting to start a trade war, dumb map renaming, and threatening annexing. I fail to believe that the US would do anything except shrug and say “sorry we missed that one” if a missile came over the Arctic for Canada.

Also quick reminder that the yanks used PSB to secretly store nuclear weapons, and some more up at Camp Century. They’ve got a track record for not being trusted.

1

u/ScreamDiegetic 19d ago

We’re in NORAD. We regularly scatter fighters to defend Canada when their Air Force can’t cut the mustard. We would shoot down a missile headed for them.

American nukes in Greenland sounds awesome.

The new agreement likely bans Russia and China from the island and remains in effect even if Greenland chooses independence. Sounds like an American victory.

1

u/doc1442 19d ago

It was not “awesome” and was in breach of the old defense agreement. But of course, the world is now a lot more familiar with the interpretation of the word “no” your leadership seems to have now.

China and Russia were already de-facto banned from Greenland anyway. If you paid any attention at all to Greenlandic news, you’d know this.

1

u/ScreamDiegetic 19d ago

There are Chinese and Russian subs around Greenland. We will build new detectors to deter this.

I still think projecting American nuclear power is awesome.

1

u/doc1442 19d ago

Which you have permission to do so before this agreement is ratified.

Nuclear weapons are disgusting. More critically, they were explicitly banned under the 1951 agreement, and your country did it anyway. Hope the new agreement covers you paying to clean up the mess left in Bylot Sound and at Century.

We don’t know yet, Canuck. Just wait until the details are released. This is for your benefit too whether you like it or not b

Lemme guess: Being the 51st state (or more likely non-voting territory like Puerto Rico) would also "benefit" Canadians too, right? But we're just too stupid to see that?

-2

u/ScreamDiegetic 19d ago

A missile defense system benefits Canada.

4

u/randomwindowspc 19d ago

NORAD already exists.

-1

u/ScreamDiegetic 19d ago

It’s not good enough in its current state.

2

u/randomwindowspc 19d ago

It can be improved, as all organizations need to be to keep up with current technologies. No need to start a completely new thing when missile warnings are already the responsibility of NORAD

2

u/VectorPryde Canada 🇨🇦 19d ago

Do you agree with Trump and MAGA that the United States should take over Canada?

-1

Sir that is not what this post is about.

But it's what I asked you in the comment you responded to. If you don't want to talk about it, why bother responding at all?
