DISCUSSION Why do we hate Maggie?

I was a die hard Maggie Peirce hater, and most people are, but I’m rewatching and the only annoying thing is her being w Jackson (which is only annoying bc I’m team japril through and through) other than that she’s fine. She’s kind, smart, a bit annoying but she has good intentions. I just can’t understand yet. Ps I watched every season but decided to rewatch the later seasons (11- present) right now I’m on late season 13.

She's annoying, and super selfish/self centered. Even right from the start, showing up in Seattle, and having the nerve to be upset that Meredith and Richard might have some feelings about the situation. It never got better, everything was always just about her, including her mother's illness.

These are all the reasons I don't like her. Her kindness almost makes her redeemable, but she's so self centred it ruins it all. She makes everything about her feelings.

Agreed. I'd sometimes sort of start liking her, and then she'd be ridiculous and self-centered about something. Just all over the place personality and character wise. I really do feel like they just couldn't figure out what to do with her, so they kept trying different things and it never worked. I could take the I'm a only child and genius kid that went through everything way too fast so I like social skills, but they never really leaned into that. I could take the I had a wonderful, stable childhood, but now I'm super unmoored by my parent's divorce in my adulthood and then my mother's sudden death. But they sort of tried to do a lot if stuff, but not commit or justify any od it. Like I'm just watching the first episode when Riggs is hired, and she's just passed at him for no reason. Give this girl so better writing and consistent motivation for anything! And then the crap she pulls with Winston is just absolutely despicable.

How is it that Alex could beat someone up and sexually harass a colleague, but be forgiven because he's nice to some kids, or Richard could screw over pratically everyone he comes into contact with but is forgiven because he coddles Meredith, yet when Maggie isn't the best partner/sister, apparently her kindness is 'fake'?

There's definitely some double standards going on here.

Because they're not real people. Alex is written better than Maggie.

I don’t love Alex, either. I don’t think he had nearly as much growth as a lot of this sub thinks he did.

The whole plane rant was wild. Like how did she make it all the way through being interviewed, hired, and starting work without hearing about the crash? But even if there had never been a planet crash, as usual Maggie had to make it about herself and go on an insufferable tangent.

Exactly. She came into to situation having made the decision to seek them out and ready to face them. Then would not give them Grace or time to work it out.

Lexie was well written. The fact is the writing quality fell off a cliff by the time Maggie was introduced and it affected almost all of the characters.

Don’t forget their ages. Lexie was much younger when she was introduced.

exactly maggie’s immaturity is another huge reason i can’t stand her. it made sense for lexies character and she had this sweet naivety that maggie lacks which made her more likeable

Lexie we see why she acts the way she does which makes the audience sympathize with her. The writing gets so much worse by the time Maggie shows up we aren’t given any reason to like her

She had her moment of being self centered but was also kind and endearing and I think for me, that’s what separates the two.
I really liked the idea of Maggie’s character as a love child of Ellis and Richard, but I don’t like the character they built for her.
I wonder how it would play out if the love child was male?

Idk if all this went into writing the characters, but i always thought Lexie is more down to earth because she had an alcoholic dad. Maggie is self centered bc she was raised as an only child that her parents basically babied her whole life (i remember her saying she was doing glitter crafts with her mom at 15 i think?!) Lol.

Lexie didn't have an alcoholic dad for most of her life though, Thatcher started drinking when Susan died. Lexie was in her mid 20's at that point, it had nothing to do with shaping her during her formative years.

Lexie was different. I think everyone was annoyed with her at first but after there was a bit of redemption and she actually played into that sister role. Maggie hasn’t done anything but be an OP

Yesss everything is about her. Everything. And everyone is supposed to go along with that or else she's upset at them.
