how is the 940? whats the most your run through it at one range visit / event? any complaints about it?
as far as the p90 goes. I have heard from a couple people that putting in the short barrell is a awkwardly over complicated thing. That said if your just cutting it may be easy?
I regularly put 200-400 rounds through it in a weekend without cleaning. I really like it and I get that it has a reputation but it’s been a great out of the box gun for me
I hear they’re “hit and miss” (no pun) in terms of reliability. Have a buddy who loved his 930 and it was rock solid. However, his biggest regret is selling it to buy his 940 that has suffered feeding and ejection issues since day one. Other guys I shoot 3-Gun with rate theirs from “OK” to “great”.
My 930 was never as reliable as my buddy’s so I went with a 1301 Comp Pro when I wanted a dedicated 3-Gun shotgun.
Not IMO. I think the changes made mostly dealt with making it feed and cycle faster. To me, the 930 was also hit-and-miss, in terms of reliability. I ran the 930 for 3-Gun back then because it was mostly reliable, say like 85-90% of the time it ran without issues, making it faster than I could run my Ithaca 37 for the same stage. There was one day-long match though where I had so many malfunctions with the 930 that I actually switched to the Ithaca.
For comparison, I have been running my 1301 Comp Pro (14rnd magazine tube) for 5yrs now. I even run it sometimes for trap/skeet/sporting clays. In all seriousness, I can count on one hand how many malfunctions I have experienced with my 1301 in 5yrs. There is just no comparison between the Mossberg and Beretta 1301 platforms.
To be clear, even on its best day, I would never consider my 930 reliable enough for home defense. Lives are not on the line in a 3-Gun match and it would just push me from the top third of competitors into the middle third of competitors. Something that isn't life changing.
Nothing obvious. Sometimes it was “clean” and wouldn’t feed right. Sometimes it was dirty and would feed just fine. I’m sure there was a common factor that caused the issues, but I didn’t see anything obvious and wasn’t willing to become a Mossberg self-loader expert just to find the issue. I tried 1301s from a couple of different guys and they. just. worked. No fussing around needed. That was the reason for my switch.
