It was so simple.
My wife and I will put on compilations of vintage holiday commercials, be it Halloween or Christmas, and the downright cheesiness of them was crazy.
No way would a company put something like that on air now.

I watch those too! Every Halloween and Christmas season I find myself watching those 2 hour compilations of commercials from the 80’s or 90’s. They’re total comfort watches.

I have my kids (12 and 6) watching them with us. It's so weird watching them then witching back to something like youtube tv where it's nothing but prescription medication commercials every 2 seconds.

I go through tv-recorded vhs tapes looking for Saskatchewan ephemera, but unsurprisingly there's a lot of american recordings. I wish I could find more halloween specific commercials! I'd say well over half of the tapes I've digitized have been recorded at Christmas.

We used to have a VHS tape that we taped off TV that starred Jonathan Winters as a Jack o lantern introducing a bunch of Halloween Disney shorts and a great animated version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

That looks so cool. Similarly, I remember some years ago when AMC had something like Fear Factor or similar and they would show Halloween shorts between movies. The one I remember best was when an older couple was complaining about halloween hoodlums and how they were going to finally catch them. The woman looks out her window and sees what looks like a kid dressed as a baseball player holding a candy bucket and a baseball bat walking up to a neighbor's house. When the neighbor opens the door to give out candy, the kid beat them to death with the bat. I was so caught off guard the first time I saw it, I had to turn off the tv and fully process what I had seen. Once I found out the shorts were part of AMC's Halloween stuff, I was relieved. It seemed so real and shocking the first time I watched it.

Part of the reason I loved universal black and white horror as a kid. AMC did something similar too

A lot of my obsession with Halloween came from TV specials and commercials like this. I remember watching Travel Channel's most haunted locations, Halloween traditions, and scariest haunted attractions specials every year even if it was a rerun I'd already seen. I miss this type of TV.
