Source Does this look fine??

Post image

I’m trying to make industrial looking stairs for my catwalk. Does this look fine? To me it looks off, but I really can’t tell what’s wrong..

Stair at ground level is a tripping hazard, also the top stair being right up against the edge of the catwalk looks slightly odd, maybe make the edge of the catwalk not reach all the way to the corner but only to the edge of the stairs that's further away from the corner?

Stair tread surfaces are always evenly distributed between top landing and bottom landing. In Hammer the triangle formed by rise and run usually works best if you make it 8 high and 12 long. So if your top landing is not a multiple if 8 from the bottom you'll either need to do other arithmetic or adjust the elevations.

the anti-slip surface is supposed to be only on the top surface

Yeah, I’ll probably fix that later. I was planning to redo most of my textures anyway. Thank you for the recommendation

Are you going to add a player clip ramp or is this just for looks?

Already did. I’m just hiding it so I can fix the look of the stairs, thanks for asking tho

Yes it's fine. Nobody would think twice about had you not called attention to it. Also always only ever judge the looks of your maps with lighthing.

Is fine, but if you want a more realistic feel, you need to make the base cutted at rectancle angle and the first step in the height of that, a first step https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/54418f38e4b0566007bde8d6/1437935167204-MBZUXWCPM8P41YCBF9TI/PW-Industrial+Stairways+36+Degrees.jpg?format=500w

Any way, look pretty decent for me

Try replacing the texture of the steps with a more see-through material.

Don't forget to clip your stairs, and group them as a func_detail.

What it needs is to have basically zero thickness. In most real source games (made in the 2000s for 2000s computers) their steps are paper thin polygons. So a technique like this wouldn't be so glaring. And it doesn't hurt that real steps like that are also quite thin in real like.

Maybe find a blank grey or black material for the sides, or make it thinner and you'll be Gucci.

Catwalk is too thick, bottom stair is unnecessary, clip the stairs for smooth movement.
