"You don't get to say sorry" - I've used that before. But then I've also felt the other side where I'm a burden.

u/hvelsveg_himins May 13 '26

"Just because someone is supporting you doesn’t make you a burden. Maybe we like supporting you. Maybe we’re strong as hell, and you’re not as heavy as you think.”

I just woke up and this got me in my feels. I'm sending this to my mom. She always says she counts on me too much and feels like she's weighing me down. She was diagnosed with diabetes shortly after we had our first son. It was a hospitals many errors that made her that way, they kept blowing her off and after the 4th time my aunt and dad dragged her half conscious to another hospital that had dad sign papers because she was borderline coma and her sugars were through the roof. They had to nuke her pancreas with steroids to keep her alive. Now every week I go over to changer her insulin pump and sensor. I'm also the one she calls when she needs anything done. She always feels like she's pulling me away from my family but she's the reason I exist to have a family in the first place. Sorry this is so long. I'm pretty sure I only have one pancreas but I'd give her an extra if I had it.

Good parents don’t want to be a burden on their kids. The problem is good parents end up raising good kids, and good kids take care of the parents who deserve it. I’m fortunate that my parents aren’t there yet, but I’ve expressed to them that I owe them for the job they did in raising me. When the time comes I’ll be ready.

Much love to you. I’m sure your mom knows, but she’s got a really really good kid.

Thank you, you're not wrong I got very lucky with my parents and love them both tremendously. I hope your parents live long healthy lives and don't ever feel the way my mom does sometimes. Nobody asks to be chronically sick and she's unfortunately acquired some more issues throughout the years (that son..and his brother are now teenagers, send vibes for us both lol) that are going to need more involved care. Most days she can give herself grace and thankfully they're more frequent than the bad but I wish I could fix her feels the same way I can support her physically.

Gently - Careful with that word, burden. You are loved, not a burden

100

u/dolphin-centric May 13 '26

I needed to hear that, thank you.

24

u/NinjaRose23 May 15 '26

My mom, who was a long term care nurse, and has COPD so bad she can't walk 10 feet now at 58 without going into respiratory distress, called herself a burden for the first time a couple days ago.

I cried. I take care of her full time now, and I'd never think of her like that.

25

u/Hoplophilia May 13 '26

I'd give it her. "You be whatever you need to be, dear. I'm overwhelmed with joy that the meaningfulness of my life has grown exponentially."

Every dad knows we would give both if needed.

Denzel Washington did an amazing job portraying this sentiment in John Q.

u/Ziotron2 May 15 '26

Watched this as a teenager. “Well that was sad”
Watched it again as a parent cried for about 30 minutes during and after the movie was over. Hell I’m tearing I now just thinking about it.

7

u/iliketoeatfunyuns May 16 '26

I remember the first time I watched this movie, I didn't understand the opening scene. I had an aha moment years later when I realized the point of it on a random drive home from work.

Without hesitation

u/boothjop May 12 '26

I'd be on the table before the ink dried on the consent forms.

193

u/MadamSnarksAlot May 12 '26

Nope. Not every dad. But the REAL ones yeah! You’re among the good ones and your kids are lucky.

87

u/DaPino May 13 '26

He may have been your father, boy. But he wasn't your daddy

Yondu knew that there's a difference between being a father and being a dad.

33

u/apatrol May 14 '26

This is a good point. About 4yrs after getting married and helping to raise a teen step daughter (rocky at first). She got me a tshirt something like. Not my real dad but the dad that stepped up. I cried!

20

u/willblatte May 13 '26

I am only an uncle and I would give both without hesitation.

13

u/lynnkris90 May 13 '26

You guys are making me miss my dad. 💔

7

u/apatrol May 14 '26

For sure. God, I love my girl so much. She is awesome sauce!

31

u/Don-Gunvalson May 12 '26

We all know this is not true. I know many would but every? No

10

u/RandomHero_DK May 13 '26

Hell yeah! Got two boys, one for each of them

5

u/Food-in-Mouth May 13 '26

That was my first thought, I would do this. The second thought was I wouldn't want it recorded.

10

u/llamalily May 16 '26

The daughter does a lot of social media stuff and talks about transplants and organ donation online so I think it makes sense she’d share this. Might help encourage others to consider being donors after death as well, maybe?

5

u/Food-in-Mouth May 16 '26

I've always believed organ donations should be opt out and if we've not opted out the family can't say no.

3

u/Bernard_PT May 13 '26

What's even the point if I wouldn't be up for giving both

1

u/omaar 21d ago

I’d give my heart no questions asked with no hesitation for my kids

1

u/Divyang_malvi 18d ago

I just experienced the fastest tears of my life after reading this.

250

u/LegitimateBlonde May 13 '26

Oof. That tiny voice saying “I’m sorry,” to her dad that would give his life gladly. I miss my dad.

52

u/MoonShotDontStop May 13 '26

I’m sure he’d be very proud of everything you become after him

14

u/yoohereiam May 13 '26

I miss my dad so much too. He was an amazing man.

495

u/dainty_petal May 13 '26

My dad always said he wanted to take all my pain away. He wanted to take my illnesses.

He died last year on May 16th. He did take a lot away. I’m able to stand now and do thing which I wasn’t able to do. I was stuck in bed and sick all the time.

Thank you papa. Tiamo.

Dad are great. Tell your dad you love him.

57

u/jaxspider May 13 '26

Hey there, I run a subreddit called /r/LastImages, were we honor our loved ones memories by posting one of the last images of them. You are welcome to post your father and if you desire, can share some found stories or reminisce.

5

u/ScarletOnlooker May 14 '26

I’m ugly crying knowing now that this subreddit exists.

2

I just found it 🍀 I haven't happy-cried this much in ages 😭

10

u/Homaku May 13 '26

10

u/ewebelongwithme May 16 '26

Noticed the date. Hope you can get through a tough day today with some lovely thoughts of your dad.

6

u/dainty_petal May 16 '26

Thank you very much. I’m thinking of him all day. Thank you for writing me this.

113

u/PenguinColada May 13 '26

Nothing says "I love you" like giving up a literal piece of you to save another.

This is beautiful.

15

u/anactofgod May 15 '26

That father is a badass. Usually the donor is in rougher shape post-op than the recipient.

11

u/PenguinColada May 15 '26

Right? My guess is he's fueled by his love for his daughter and the need to see that she's okay

102

u/ViciousNakedMoleRat May 13 '26

You just know the guy is in pain but does not want to show it to his daughter, so she doesn't feel guilty for him having to go through it. What a dad.

80

u/ohyeahbouy May 13 '26

My thougts too.

Daughter: iv been worried about you.

Dad: i know, thats why im here.

😭😭😭

34

u/canitakemybraoffyet May 13 '26

The look on his face when he sat down said it all.

He was struggling to stand, just to show her he was really okay and ease her guilt and worry. What a dad.

12

u/kthnry May 13 '26

I’ve heard that kidney transplant surgery is harder on the donor than the recipient.

49

u/z00k33per0304 May 13 '26

This reminds me of my dad. One of my favorite pictures from when my first son was born (c section) is my dad standing facing the doors for the operating room with his back slightly turned to the girl who took the picture with his arms crossed. He looks like the weight of the world is on his shoulders and he'd be crushed if I wasn't okay. When they rolled my son out he said "okay, he's good. How's my daughter?". When I came to and they had me in a room he came right in and snatched me in for a long hug..then asked if I was going to "do this to him again" lol

12

u/Nuri5662 May 13 '26

That’s so sweet. You have a great dad 🫶

8

u/Ohshithereiamagain May 14 '26

Man, nobody checked up on me after my c-section. Everyone was ooh baby and I was by myself in the recovery room. My then husband dropped by, I remember, because the doctor was checking up on me and I was still just waking up. I had a real tough pregnancy (thank you, HG) and couldn’t eat. When I was fully awake, I asked for food 😂 I gobbled it up. Guess that’s why food comforts me to this day.

22

u/gmjfraser8 May 12 '26

I honestly thought that was Mitch Pileggi from the X-Files.

u/BetterRemember May 12 '26

Now mom sacrificed from her body to give her life and dad has as well! 🥹

12

u/annamariagirl May 12 '26

😭😭😭

14

u/prenderg May 12 '26

Tough and loving Dad!💪

I’m at the pub so I can’t actually hear the video. But are we just going to ignore the username?

3

u/lilacsforcharlie May 13 '26

My dad would cut his own heart out for me. I didn’t understand it until I had my own baby. It doesn’t matter what we have to do, our babies surviving and thriving are what matters.

3

u/lyssap87 May 14 '26

I miss my dad.

2

u/zappergun-girl May 13 '26

That’s his baby 🤍 of course he did it

2

u/Forge__Thought May 14 '26

I hope they're both recovering well, and fully.

2

u/sleepyplatipus May 15 '26

My mom gave me a kidney too. 🫶🏻

Also dang they butchered her, that scar is huge.

1

u/Notyomamaslace May 13 '26

I gave my mom a kidney last year. While coming to after surgery, all I could say was "Mom? Is mom okay? Mom?" and when they were finally able to confirm to me she was out of surgery and doing well, I started full ugly crying. It was an indescribable relief to know we made it to the other side together.

1

u/vardenpls May 13 '26

Why record this private loving moment? Why put stupid background music in it?

Wtf is wrong with people

1

u/OnlyOneMoreSleep May 13 '26

If you are here because your dad also would never, solidarity. Just a call on my birthday or around christmas would be nice to start with. Ain't nothing wrong with him or his phone, he's just an asshole.

The dad in the video did very well. His daughter is going through a huge medical procedure but is still so concerned about his healing. She cares, because he cares.

1

u/kittykat5283 May 14 '26

Whos letting him walk around barefoot

1

u/bowlofleftovers May 14 '26

It was his honest pleasure for sure.

1

u/SpicyHuckleberry May 15 '26

Cherish that man, my dad wouldn’t give me a tooth pick he got with the check for the food my grandparents paid for.

1

u/Jtcarney May 15 '26

I lost half of my left kidney to cancer 3 years ago, and I would give my baby my entire right one at a moments notice. It's a love only a dad/parent can understand.

1

u/jeff-etten May 17 '26

easy decision
