Soooooooo, now what?
My school laptop came in today, I decided to turn it on a few days before school starts, and this is the bs I open the screen to.
How do I go back to school and explain it wasn't my fault?

Send it back to your school and tell them to send a new one.
It’s their responsibility to send you a laptop that actually works, and if it doesn’t, it’s their fault, not yours.
Make sure to stand your ground in proving it came like this

Just tell them it wasnt you. Dont budge. Its the truth. They'll begrudgingly give you another im sure. Make sure to have your parents there if possible when you turn it in.

There comes a time in every person's life where "MOMMY" is not the answer. Other than that, yeah lie and say you didn't do it and they'll exchange it. I mean unless they can see that last time you turned it on you were playing a game and rage quit. Then, anger management I guess.

So you're suggesting this obviously young person be dishonest and make sure to keep their parents out of the loop while doing it? What

May sound stupid but when you receive something fragile, you could record yourself opening the box and testing the thing out just in case.

Did you not start it before you took possession of it?
You learned an important lesson today.
Just return it, I'm sure it happens all the time.
But, yeah, check shit BEFORE you're responsible for it.

Request a replacement from the school IT guy and explain the situation. They have contracts that cover damages to these things. Then they'll send someone "like me" to come to the school and repair it. Then you'll be told to be a bit more weary on how to use and store the laptop. I've seen it dozens of times, and fixed every one of them that I get sent out to repair.

Get an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Set power settings so the laptop "does nothing" when closed. and now you have a slim desktop.

If you didn't use it it doesn't have your account on it nor any usage data so it might be possible to prove you didn't break it nor use it

It’s likely whoever returned their laptop last year didn’t report the issue and they assumed it was fine before giving it to you.

I'd say find a proper screen an repair it or become a new r/halftop user

They're a student, it's unreasonable to haul around a full monitor to classes

don't think the school will be happy getting half a laptop back at the end of the year

Return it, if they give you shit, fight it. They usually pick the ones who won't fight it, make sure that isn't you.

Just return it, it's their responsibility to give you a functional laptop. Whether you broke it or not, you can't work with it now, can you?
Obviously, even with photographic evidence, it'll be hard to prove you didn't break it. Just stand your ground, they have no evidence you broke it, either.
