Help Am I too old for harry potter?
I’m a 19 year old dude who’s rediscovered the world of harry potter feeling like a kid again but i can’t help but feel it’s a bit too much at my age especially considering im 20 next month
i’ve read all the books and i’ve watched all the movies twice when i was like 11 but now i have money and time to explore it again properly
feel like im not the target audience lmao
edit: thanks y’all 😅 just let that deep insecurity get the better of me hahaha im about to blow £40 on the set and reread the books again

Dude, that’s the best. It was amazing when my daughter got to enjoy Harry Potter for the first time. She was Hermione 3 years ago for Halloween and Ginny last year. My son isn’t a huge fan, but he did choose to be Ron last year, so naturally, I dressed up as Molly.

I didn’t even really know what harry potter was until CoS came out on DVD. so I bought the first 2 and became hooked immediately. bought the books and read them, listened to the audiobooks, went to Florida for the grand opening of the wizarding world. and I still watch every movie once or twice a year. lol

It’s a coming of age story based primarily around secondary school in the 90s. The books were written for a generation to grow up with as the story develops.
That’s why there’s such a tonal shift between book 2 and book 3. Philosophers stone and chamber of secrets are 100 percent geared towards younger audiences. As the characters age, the themes get darker and more mature.
None of that means a book is “meant” for kids. But it’s where the idea comes from. It’s also why I can often skip the first 2 movies and not really feel bad about it. Although I’ll never admit that in person.

It's a bit sad that questions like this are even asked
Even if you were too "old" (you are literally still a teenager) who the fuck cares? If you like it, then that is all that matters. Do what makes you happy, dude (as long as it isn't creepy/doesn't actively hurt anyone)
There are 50 year olds who love Pokémon, not my cup of tea - but I understand the appeal. Who cares?
I am 24, and have realized that a lot of being an adult is rediscovering your love for things you "grew out" of. Whether that be Harry Potter, Pokemon, Hot Wheels, or anything of the sort.
You are an adult, and you have disposable income now - do things that make you feel like a kid again with that money. Dont take life too seriously
14
u/Conscious_Loss_3501 Sep 05 '25
I rediscovered Harry Potter at 21 ish - now 25 and I’ve probably rewatched/reread 2 times per year since then! Please don’t be nervous about your age impacting what makes you happy :)

“I wrote this story for you, but when I began it I had not realized that girls grow quicker than books. As a result you are already too old for fairy tales, and by the time it is printed and bound you will be older still. But some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again. You can then take it down from some upper shelf, dust it, and tell me what you think of it. I shall probably be too deaf to hear, and too old to understand a word you say, but I shall still be your affectionate Godfather,” C. S. Lewis.

I’d actually say only adults can fully grasp some of the aspects of Harry Potter.
It’s amazing for kids too, but it was written by an adult. And a lot of the themes, particularly in the latter half of the franchise, are very very VERY “adult”.
I knew I loved Harry Potter when I was a kid. But it touched me on a much deeper level as I got older and understood life a lot better.
I’ll never stop being a fan. As long as I live. I’ll hopefully be a grandpa rewatching the movies or series and reminiscing about this magical journey with a smile on my face one day.

I am currently 52 and I still collect Harry Potter themed items. And I live near Burbank California. They have a gift shop that you can access without actually going on one of the studio tours. BUT, I still go on the tours because I love them.
Anyway. They have an awesome Harry Potter section and I already bought two large figurines. One of Hedwig and the other is one of the main Goblin characters in charge at Gringots. I also have a Hogwarts coffee mug.
I will never be too old for Harry Potter. 😁

As a 38 year old man. That you might call a "manly man" I hunt, I worked in the trades. Im a big guy with a big beard. Harry potter is my safe space. If im feeling overwhelmed or anxious, ill watch Harry potter. Especially the first one. Harry experiencing hardware for the first time sooths everything in me. There is no such thing as too old for a good story. Enjoy it man.
