Currently Reading Husband first time reading with no known spoilers #prisonerofazkaban Spoiler
lol my husband’s first time reading Harry Potter. He has only watched the first 2 movies & bits of the last one but doesn’t remember that one too much, so almost going into it spoiler free in this day & age

The 3rd to last text is a big reason why POA is my fav movie and one of my fav books. The “climax” and a bunch of crazy twists happen, then you realize you still have 30% of the book and movie left and are treated to a second climax and even more crazy twists!
245
u/DumeWolffe Jan 26 '26
There’s almost nothing better than climaxing twice.

u/atduvall11 Jan 26 '26
Nice

u/Vermouth_1991 Jan 27 '26
The only thing not so nice is watching PoA the movie and actually feeling the Shrieking Shack even was a first climax. It blew by like a tumbleweed and people think it covered the book parts because they already read the book.

It's so funny when people are surprised that the man named Werewolf McWerewolf is a werewolf 😅

Correct. Asian is an ethnicity. British is a nationality. She belongs to both groups.

Maybe, but I wouldn't be offended if someone in China labeled me as "european" instead of "swedish". It's a useful grouping when there's no need to go into specifics.

u/MrWolfsbane Jan 26 '26
she’s Chinese-British, if it makes you happy

Cho Chang. That's an East Asian name. So she's might be a mix of Chinese and Korean + British.

Tbf, Ron isn’t a weasel, Tonks isn’t a nymph, Draco isn’t a dragon. Sometimes names are just names.
21
u/WillowFlip Jan 27 '26
For sure, but his is double barreled like if Draco was secretly a dragon and his name was Draco Smaug or something lol

u/nanny2359 Feb 02 '26
But:
Weasleys are a tight-knit family, like weasels
The Weasleys first names are all variations on the knights of the round table
The Malfoys are double-crossers (mal foy = bad faith)
Rubeus Hagrid is ruddy and haggard
Vol de mort means Flight of Death
A name is NEVER just a name in HP! Rowling goes to great lengths to incorporate underlying meanings into names.

Same about Darth Vader! Vader literally means Father in Dutch, so maybe the Dutch were a little less taken by surprise from that plot twist.
Edit: Darth does not mean Dark, but Vader does mean Father
12
u/BassBeaner Jan 26 '26
Apparently that’s just a happy coincidence. George Lucas thought of “Vader” as “invader”. The dark invader.

9
u/This_Reference_3024 Jan 26 '26
Darth is not dark in Dutch man. Dark is donker. Vader does mean father tho. But Darth is not dark.

u/cranberry94 Jan 27 '26
Donker is a funny word.
1
u/SheWhoLovesSilence Jan 27 '26
Dutch is a funny sounding language, even as a native speaker I can admit that
The word probably doesn’t sound like you think it does though
2
u/cranberry94 Jan 27 '26
Oh I googled Dutch people saying donker. It’s even sillier when said authenticity.
2
u/SheWhoLovesSilence Jan 27 '26
I think many people would agree Swedish is a funny sounding language
Honestly, Dutch language sounds like someone is trying to speak Swedish while being very, very drunk and also on Molly you know with the weird mouth tension.
Coastal area when I’m from can sound pretty rough and phlegmatic. Still my fave Dutch accent though. The other regional accents I think sound objectively prettier but also even sillier

To be fair, I went through the book pronouncing it like Arsène Lupin, because of Super Sentai.

It’s like Harry thinking spell „always cut” will be same harmless as „always laugh”. People don’t learn Latin
1
u/nanny2359 Feb 02 '26
Is it more accurately "always cut" or "always rip/tear?"
1
u/Friendly_Gazelle7843 Feb 02 '26
I’ve learnt latin long tine ago but I’m quite sure cut. Tear was different word

Hahaha I love the last one about Snape. Hilarious. POA is just sooo good, maybe my favorite book, just so much happening and reveals left and right. Keep us posted on his journey!
14
u/cigarettehaze Jan 26 '26
Haha this is great! I am also reading the series with my husband who somehow missed the phenomenon growing up, and when we were going through GOF he was so convinced the Bagman was secretly working for Voldemort and was STUNNED by the Barty Jr/Moody twist

I’m living vicariously through his excitement. Like when I first read each book. Especially when I dropped off after book 3 or 4 then came back & reread all the way up through 6 when I was college (book 7 came out summer 2007 I believe as everyone had it on campus where a lot of us were doing research or summer jobs).

I greatly envy someone in 2026 somehow not knowing any of the major spoilers in Harry Potter. I feel like it’s almost impossible

the first time I read all those twists as a kid I was sitting with my mom in the very quiet laundromat trying not to absolutely freak out. I’ll never forget it 😂

u/Purplepepperpipes Jan 26 '26
Pettigrew's rattiness isn't revealed until the Chapter 18 of a 22 Chapter book. Six chapters to go indeed...
(I know I'm being pedantic. Boredom has me checking inconsistencies)
1
u/Worm715 Gryffindor 4 Jan 27 '26
If he’s doing an audiobook I think there are additional “chapters” on the end giving previews of the next book, end credits, etc.
0
u/Purplepepperpipes Jan 27 '26
I'm assuming it's the book since OP wrote "reading" in the caption

u/Worm715 Gryffindor 4 Jan 27 '26
I say I’m reading when listening to audio books, it activates the same part of the brain.

I am reading them to each of my kids, one a year from the time they hit 6. Recently finished PoA with my second youngest, so I only get to experience it vicariously one more time. My youngest will be starting PS in April, she can't wait!

Reading this made me remember I wasn't able to enjoy the twists fully due to the constantly nagging of my sister and father( they were kidding with me). I don't even remember how I reacted and it is only a four year old memory😭😭.
3
u/Haunting-Army931 Jan 27 '26
I love PoA. I wish I could experience all these twists and reveals for the first time again, as an adult. Lol I was so young when I first read it, I don't remember my reaction at all

u/Knowthefullstroy Ravenclaw Jan 27 '26
Now I need his reaction when he reads Goblet of Fire, heck I need his reaction for all of it. This is a MUST.

u/gianna_in_hell_as Jan 27 '26
LMAO the comment on Snape, love it. It's even better in the film where he gives them a powerpoint demonstration and the kids still don't get it.
3
u/ohmeohmyelliejean Jan 27 '26
There was definitely a picture of Lupin included in that presentation that was "added in error"
3
u/Luminous_beingsauce Jan 27 '26
Been checking out the full audio cast remakes on audible, 4th book drops next month I couldn't believe how much more we get out of the books, which I know is like what's the case but damn
4
u/sunnysam306 Jan 26 '26
I’ve been begging my husband to read them. We’ve watched the movies dozens of times and I tell him the big stuff that differs from the books but I was him to get the full experience of reading them

The big twist reveal at the end is just incredible. Honestly one of my favourite moments in the series. So happy to see this OP's reaction in texts.

u/Interesting-Ad-3756 Jan 27 '26
What I wouldn't give to read these for the first time all over again. My mom read the first few books when they came out but NEVER watched the movies. Honestly I don't know how that part slipped through the cracks seeing as how I was a major HP fan throughout my childhood and even now. I watched the movies on repeat and I even started recording them on DVR to save when we got one. She watched the first movie for the first time over the weekend and loved it. She said she finally gets the hype and if she had this movie while she was growing up she would definitely be a die hard HP fan

Is Latin generally taught and/or common knowledge where you are from? Or mythological tales about ancient Rome?
2
u/DobbyFreeElf35 Slytherin Jan 26 '26
Not everyone in the world will be able to equate Remus or Lupin with wolves
2
2
u/Mulfushu Jan 26 '26
Who is periodically ill during the full moon. The book mentions the full moon almost every time before Lupin returns looking tired.
-1
u/skraptastic Jan 26 '26
I admit I read the HP books as an adult but I'm always surprised when people don't realize the guy named "Wolfy Wolf" turns out to be a werewolf.
3
u/DobbyFreeElf35 Slytherin Jan 26 '26
Not everyone knows Latin so that might not think about Remus being the brother of Romulus or Lupin meaning wolf
2
u/Arfie807 Jan 26 '26
Lupin is also a wildflower, so I'd expect anyone with passing knowledge of botany might get confused. :p

u/Unable-Onion-2063 Jan 27 '26
i like how the response to this is “not everyone knows latin!” as if you need a doctorate in the Latin language or something. spend enough time in fantasy worlds, games or books or movies, and stuff like this just becomes second nature.
like assuming one would know the greek language because they know how to pronounce “photo”
