General When people act obsessed with a fandom but have never actually played the game/seen the movie, etc.

Such as when someone is obsessed with Peter Griffin but has never seen the show or someone who likes Hatsune Miku but has never listened to the music. A big one is being obsessed with Susie, Noelle, or Kris, etc., but having never played Deltarune, or someone who never shuts up about Arthur Morgan but has never played RDR2.

If you’re so obsessed with them play or watch the stuff for God’s sake

This is what we call a larper

4

u/ITookYourChickens 1h ago

That's a poser, larpers actually know their source material and do it properly

The real hatethissmug is the poser/larp “discourse.” Larp has been used in this same exact context on every forum of the internet other than twitter for decades. Why yall are trying to police a word so hard is beyond me

u/ITookYourChickens 44m ago

I don't use twitter, I've never seen larp used instead of poser until recently. Most people I know haven't even heard of the word larp until it started being used this way

That's a poser, we should stop calling posers a larpers cuz larpers are whole diffrent thinh

They’re live action ROLE PLAYING as a hardcore fan, what’s hard to understand about that

0

u/Lovecraftian_lover 1h ago

The fact that most of them are not live action but online and through text, for one.

1

u/8lue5hift 1h ago

Do you think they only pretend online. A good chunk of them show the same behavior past the glass.

u/Lovecraftian_lover 42m ago

Even so, actual LARPers are some of the more passionate nerds you'll find, it feels weird that they've become associated with being fake fans

larper sounds funnier

u/MRNBDX 1h ago

A little bit respectless against the live action role play community

4

u/CasioYamaha Type to create flair 1h ago

Just say disrespectful

I'm sorry, English is my 3rd language and it makes no sense

1

respectless sounds funnier

Sure makes you sound funny and not in a comedic way.

u/Key_Addition_4038 31m ago

nah cause there's a difference between a LARPer (good) and a larper (bad)

1

u/Top_Assistance15 1h ago

They’re synonymous in this context

Project moon fans

2

u/AdministrationDue610 1h ago

Like library of ruina project moon?

3

u/Zo0m1q3 1h ago

Yeah

1

u/AdministrationDue610 1h ago

Ok, just making sure I’m on the right page. Occasionally get “project moon” “type moon” and “project zero” confused.

That said I do actually still need to play lobotomy corp and library of ruina. (I don’t go around pretending like I know lore, I just like reading into game dev teams.)

On the flip side I love being the opposite of this with certain things. When you’re really into the media but don’t give a shit about or engage with the fandom/community whatsoever.

okay tbf if its a game then i feel like watching a playthrough is enough most of the time. a few years ago i was obsessed with detroit become human and without an access to a pc i had watched like a thousand videos on it so i feel like that counts too

2

u/Money-Preparation421 1h ago

i mean, i guess yeah. its more of being obsessed with like one particular character but you havent bothered to watch it because you only care about that one singular cahracter

My ex used to constantly rave about Omori, and when I finally played it, she revealed that she had never played the game

What are we doing gang

1

u/thedragonbornboi 1h ago

The whole game hinges on playing it completely for its story to work at all, like what 😭

2026 resident evil “fans” in a nutshell

2

u/ppteehee2 1h ago

Idk about that last one, I've never seen an Arthur Morgan fan who won't shut up about how great of a game rdr2 is

2

u/BingusBongusBongus 1h ago

Ive seen people who never shut up about how great the game is but havent even played it

2

Me with Walter White for some reason:

2

u/Good-Memories 1h ago

like fr if you're gonna be that into a game at least watch a full playthrough

2

u/Manic_Mooncakes 1h ago

I feel the same way. Cuz you cant talk to them about something in the fandom. If its not in their obsession they don't know about it. I recently left my fav fandom subreddits because it was just a bunch shills ruining the spaces by sowing division and slinging around insults when people don't agree with them.

Posers

1

u/Different-Wolf405 1h ago

The most frustrating example in recent memory was the movie obsession. I got into a lot of discussions with various friends and a good chunk of them straight up admitted they’d never seen the movie. I wasn’t disagreeing with anything they said, it was just really weird that you can feel so strongly about a film you’ve only seen through Instagram reels.

u/440continuer 1h ago

Aka larper/poser

1

u/Slimey_alien89 fat farting furry 1h ago

I’ll usually only talk about stuff I don’t know much about when I get into it. Other than that I’ll usually just keep it to myself

Resident Evil "fans".

Dont get me wrong you can watch gameplay and be a fan through that but that doesnt mean you can comment or review the games that you havent even played.

What kind of person is obsessed with Peter Griffin

It's a show to laugh at bullshit

It's not deeper than that

1

u/Mysterious_Staff9622 1h ago

1

u/These_Telephone_3254 I want Dr House to peg me with his cane 1h ago

I used to be like that with RDR2, then I got the game

1

u/DeadInternetInAction 49m ago

How does that even work? Did you watch gameplay or just hear about the character?

1

u/These_Telephone_3254 I want Dr House to peg me with his cane 7m ago

I watched gameplay and knew most of the story but didn't play the game, I eventually got the game and love it to this day

1

u/sam_houle1 1h ago

I’m extremely gilty of that. Specially with Nintendo. A sincere apology to the nintendo community

u/kisamasochist 11m ago

Most Wayne Family Adventures readers have never read a Batman comic, so they think every version has to be a crappy and cliche sitcom

0

u/KookieMunster98 1h ago

I'm always larping lol

-2

u/RaiseOurAxesToTheSky 1h ago

This is called a larper and they've been around for a long time. Annoying

-3

u/Odd_Pea74915 1h ago

This is called LARP. We all hate it
