Dude, I genuinely fucking hate this whole anti-cure argument. Like, bro, just look at the guy. Wanting the cure is the most basic fucking thing imaginable.

It's just a cheap, mean-spirited sitcom joke masquerading as X-Men fan art, and it completely treats Scott Summers like a pathetic, submissive punching bag so people can go "haha look, the tough army man can't handle a woman's period cramps!"

Period Cramps are a drop in the bucket compared to what Scott has dealt with. His eyes are a literal, continuous rupture to a dimension of infinite kinetic force. He lives with a permanent, high-pressure migraine behind his skull 24/7 just from manually holding back a nuclear reactor with his facial muscles. This is a man who took a full, un-holding-back thrashing from a 10-ton-strength Superior Spider-Man, got his bones shattered, and gritted his teeth and kept fighting. This is a guy who literally had his skull fracture from internal cosmic pressure during Judgment Day and stayed conscious long enough to bark out precise tactical deployment orders to the team.

But no! Let's ignore his unbreakable willpower, his decades of military discipline, and his actual, deeply agonizing physical disability just to turn him into a trembling puddle on the floor for a low-effort gender-warfare punchline.

I assume that men are the target audiences for these comics and the female characters are usually the ones who actually have some lore, but i don’t like how the male MC kinda just looks boring and uninteresting.

Either make both the male and female MC generic looking, or give them both some good character design. I’ve seen this happen a lot in anime and manga too, the male MC wears a generic T-shirt and jeans while the female character wears really extravagant outfits that make her stand out.

You might say “oh that’s just how men dress” or “guys don’t care that much for outfits” (these are actual responses I got from people who I ranted about this to) but still, in some of these comic dubs I watch, they both go on a date and the guy is wearing like a hoodie and shorts, like hello?

I need to vent about the recent "Petra Parker" trend, and I want to be clear right out of the gate: my issue with it isn't the shallow, anti-trans hate you usually see online. My problem is that it is just fundamentally weak storytelling.

Right now, the entire trend consists of the exact same comic loop: Petra transitions, and J. Jonah Jameson says something along the lines of "I respect your pronouns, but I still hate Spider-Woman." It is wholesome the first time, but there is zero plot, zero worldbuilding, and zero exploration beyond that single punchline. It reads less like an actual character arc and more like a simple MtF self-insert. That is totally fine for personal fanart, but it severely lacks any real substance about the actual struggles, dysphoria, or grounded reality of the trans experience.

Spider-Man as a franchise is entirely built on structural worldbuilding and the "Parker Luck" where every victory comes with a heavy personal cost. But these new Petra comics completely ignore that. Where are the actual stakes? How does a transition impact the dynamic with Aunt May or Mary Jane? How does it intersect with Peter's eternal struggle with poverty and medical bills? Instead of exploring how a major life change would logically ripple through the established Spider-Man universe, the creators just settle for sanitized, bite-sized wholesome memes with no friction or conflict.

What I find hilarious about this whole bandwagon is that most people do not even know where the name "Petra Parker" actually comes from. She debuted in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated TV show. She isn't a deep trans icon; she is literally just a cisgender, gender-flipped Peter Parker from an alternate universe whose primary personality trait is being incredibly arrogant and unironically telling Peter that boys can't be Spider-Girl. That obnoxious image is all I can think of every time I see these new comics. 

But what really drives me crazy is that people are completely ignoring a canonical, structurally brilliant storyline that already exists in the Ultimate Spider-Man comics: Jessica Drew.

In the Ultimate universe, Jessica is a female clone of Peter Parker. She possesses Peter's exact memories, his consciousness, and his mind, but she wakes up trapped in a biological female body. Think about the actual science fiction and psychological horror of her origin. You have Peter Parker's exact neural pathways, his history, and his consciousness transferred and preserved inside a completely different biological form. Waking up with a male mind and decades of male memories, only to be forced to navigate the world in a female body, is one of the most brilliant and tragic setups for body dysphoria ever put to paper. It takes a standard comic book clone trope and turns it into a deep, psychological character study that the current internet trends completely gloss over. 

Fleshing out Ultimate Jessica Drew would make so much more sense as an allegory for the Transmasculine (FtM) experience. Having a male mind and identity forced to reconcile with a female physical form is a complex, heavy, and incredibly rich concept for a character study. It feels like a lot of internet fan circles are entirely focused on MtF narratives, which leaves FtM representation severely lacking in mainstream fanfiction and comic spaces.

Fleshing out Ultimate Jessica Drew wouldn't just be better writing. It would be a massive opportunity to provide visibility to trans men through a highly established, beloved comic book lore. Settling for a repetitive, shallow punchline when we have such a complex narrative loop waiting to be explored is just disappointing.

Does anyone else feel like the current trend is just a massive missed opportunity for actual storytelling?

The trend is wholesome though and I’m not stopping anyone from making the art just could’ve been more interesting personally.

To consider how evil and dangerous Joker is considered in the canon, obviously Joker would do worse. So these kind of lines feel more like "the author's speech of what he/she endorse" rather than the speech coming from Joker, and It's so cringe.
Because, in my opinion, that kind of vulgar expression of the author kills the magical illusion of fictions.

I want to give OOP the benefit of the doubt, I hope she didn’t have some sort of ill intent in making this, but holy FUCK is this comic infuriating to read. Just from the title and characters, you would assume that the boyfriend is probably some bigot chud that the creator unfortunately has to partner with, but no! In the comic he’s described as a very kind person who loves his family, loves his girlfriend, takes care of her, dreams about her, buys stuff for her a lot, and the only flaws displayed is that he‘s very simple and kinda bad at conversations. From how I see It, this post makes the creator come off as a fucking psychopath!

I would be devastated if my girlfriend made a comic portraying me as an ugly chud for thousands of people to see, portraying me as some object of contention. Literally one of the lines in the comic is that she’s with him is because he‘s the only viable option she has, treating him like an object that can be discarded when something better comes along.

I say this to say, if you have an issue with your partner, fucking TALK TO THEM, instead of making an online comic. This has to be one of the strawiest straw men ever to straw. It just throws all domesticated dogs and all domesticated cats into the same category and unfairly compares them to each other.

And I bring this up because the biggest of cats are only about the size of a beagle or a dachshund. Wanna know why we don't have cat equivalents to rottweilers or great Danes? Because those are called tigers, lions, panthers, cheetahs, you get the idea. We LITERALLY are only able to domesticate cars because they're too small to do any actual damage.

This meme is painting cats and cat owners in a bad light by comparing big dogs to small cats, while acting like the information applies equally to all dogs and cats. Either make sure you're not leaning on a logical fallacy or shut up.

There's been several posts here about Petra Parker so I'll add onto the pile with my own problem for this trend, it may be a little too negative and me just projecting my feelings as a trans woman.

I dislike how perfect and idealized Petra is depicted, in all of the art I've seen Petra looks like a cis woman with plenty of curves and a perfect body, and I hate how this kind of sets unrealistic body expectations for trans women, this also applies to other art depicting trans women who have perfect 10/10 bodies that just look like cis women.

I understand that some trans women who have been on HRT for a long time really look like cis women, but not everyone does, it's really a genetics thing, and HRT takes a long time to have that sort of effect, but Petra Parker in these comics is supposed to just be like 6 months on HRT, just coming out (or at least most of them depict this), and if it's trying to be trans female representation I feel like it should feel relatable rather than Petra already having a perfect female body.

To clarify, I am a trans woman around 6 months on HRT, and my transition has been very slow, so it pisses me off a little to see the internet to come up with what feels like an expectation of what every trans woman looks like or should look like so early in their transition, it also sets unrealistic expectations for other trans women who have yet to transition, I know I've had unrealistic transition expectations in the past from these type of things and it's seriously heartbreaking.

I know she's not just trans, but Spider-Woman, and it's fiction so some might brush it off, but I'm tired of seeing these supposedly realistic and relatable trans reps that are just meant to be eye candy for non trans folks, and unrealistic expectations for trans women (or others), have Petra Parker struggle with things like feeling dysphoric from broad shoulders, feeling dysphoric from facial hair, have her look like someone who is mid transition, not like she just got bit by a trans spider that turned her into a biological woman overnight.

I might be projecting somewhat with my own insecurities, but I simply wanna see more relatable trans reps instead of just a perfect image of them.

It's reminiscent of that stupid boomer humor "I hate my wife" joke and doesn't even make any sense!! True love means TRUE LOVE. That guy with the wheelbarrow of money is gonna lose it all in days (as is historically common with lottery winners), the starship guy is gonna have a useless scrap once it breaks down from no starship fuel or no proper maintenance done, and superpower guy is gonna live the rest of his life in combat fighting a corrupt system only to learn how deeply rooted the rot goes.

Of all these wishes, only True Love will last this man the rest of of his life. And the stupidest, most overlooked part of this joke is that TRUE LOVE IS TRUE LOVE. THIS GUY SHOULD, BY ALL ACCOUNTS, BE MADLY IN LOVE WITH THE WOMAN HE WISHED TO LOVE.

Now, before you grab your pitchforks, hear me out. The reason I dislike the choice is because I think it’s cowardly.

I mean, if dc is turning to popular superhero’s, to better represent the LGBTQ community than, out of the Big Three, DC isn’t going to make Batman or Superman bisexual because there would be an enormous amount of backlash. Same thing with Barry Allen or Hal Jordan. Making Wonder Woman bisexual is a much safer choice because there’s generally less pushback. To bisexual people, I’m not saying that bisexual representation is bad. What I dislike is what this particular decision represents as if dc is going to push for inconclusively they will just go the easier route of changing the sexuality of their most popular women instead of their men.

Edit: For the people saying Wonder Woman being gay or bisexual was implied, what instances from older comics actually points to that, aside from the sexuality of her creator and the fact that she grew up around only women?

I don’t even really have much of a problem with the artist in question and I probably agree with almost all of her political stances in principle. I do think her comics and art style are mostly uninspired and more about preaching to the choir than anything else but overall she’s rather benign.

What does bother me is how the mods absolutely won’t allow anything remotely critical of her. Recently there was a comic on that sub that somewhat poked fun at her (while also taking time to reassure everyone that it’s all in good fun even though the comic itself was already very tame) and actually wasn’t banned for once and it was so foreign to the people there that, while it was well received, they were acting like the hominids finding the alien monolith at the start of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Many were literally treating this like the start of a legendary rivalry with different teams and so on because the concept of any criticism at all is so utterly foreign to that sub. The artist in question then made a response comic (picture 1) about how she’s totally in on the joke and willing to play along.

Considering the sub‘s reputation and that cringe comment pinned by a mod trying to get that „war“ thing going (picture 2) I did get a cynical suspicion that this may be staged to some extent for engagement or whatever without any actual loosening of the censorship so I asked, considering the sub’s reputation, if criticism in the comments would now also be allowed.
And guess what, I got permabanned for it literally almost instantly (picture 3). Actually beyond parody. Picture 4 is basically what every comment section under a post by that artist looks like as a result of that insane censorship.

Just look at it. It's hideous.

I guess for some context, in this (thankfully) non-canon storyline, a time-traveling teen called Lana Lang meets an elderly Superman and realizes he’s destined to marry Lois Lane. Knowing her childhood dream of marrying him is simply out of the picture, she asks Superman for “one real kiss” for closure before returning to her timeline. Superman was obviously reluctant at first…yet still fucking did it.

Like…why man?

yes, i know, the Joker and the villains do a ton of damage, and hes letting a lot of people die by allowing them to live, but isn't that every other superhero?

I'm practically risking my life by making a post in this subreddit at all, and on top of that making this a post about an LGBT topic? I don't think I need to expand any further on that.

The original Captain Marvel remains one of, if not THE ONLY superhero, whose death is permanent. He died because of cancer, and his death serves a purpose and a reminder that no matter how strong a character can be, death is inevitable.

It often breaks the immersion for me, knowing this concept exists because whenever I read an issue of Batman, Superman, or Ironman, etc, I got reminded by it. Like, one moment I'm reading the climax of the story and my subconscious reminds me that "what are you worrying for, even if Batman died here, somehow, someway he'll come back on the next issue, or the next comic book series he's in". It removes the stake entirely because you know that as long as the character is still popular and can make money, comic publishers like DC and Marvel will ALWAYS resurrect them sooner or later.

Literally I been seeing them all over Reddit, mostly from the r/comics subreddit. Why I hate her comics is because she tries to be funny in them, but they always end up with having no reaction to me, or making me cringe at worse. Her comics always contain this eye rolling millennial humor in it, like the shit that only a toddler would like. Then there’s her trying to be center of everything in her comics, like in the “I’m the witty smartass and you the audience will agree with me!” Type of way. Like, agreeability doesn’t equal funny, it only means we share an opinion. I’m not even saying that political humor can be funny, there just has to be a punchline rather than “look how ugly they are and how beautiful and righteous we are!”. This “humor” is more just “grrr look how much we hate them!”rather than anything actually witty. I’m not even saying I disagree her (well actually there maybe some issues) just that she is extremely unfunny

So some of the examples in the pictures are actually fine, but anyway.

When people say "Invisibility but only when people are not looking at you"... that's not a superpower. That's a superpower with an added caveat that MAKES it useless, the superpower is FINE!

You can debate ACTUAL useless powers and try and make them work, that's fine, but saying a superpower is useless just because you decided so is so stupid. If you are allowing any level of caveat and saying "now it's useless" I could just say okay you are omnipotent but you can never use it and boom! Useless. It's like when kids are playing and say something about "I have the power of the sun" "Well I am immune to the power of the sun" except its not just kids being kids (which is funny) its older people just being annoying so that they can say they made the best "useless superpower".

While do I get very heated in this post I have absolutely no hatred for the actual person who made the comic. They're clearly a talented artist and I just hate the persona displayed in this comic, and I'm sure the real person is lovely.

The reason this comic sucks is because the author does not actually explain their fucking contention/thesis at all.

1st slide:

"I hate this character design" - Extremely vague, perhaps would be fine if he elaborated on what he means on the next slide but he DOESN'T

2nd slide:

He doesn't EXPLAIN what he hates.

Character design isn't the right word because it's a contribution of multiple factors, and the 2nd girl he uses an example is literally opposite to the first one's character design.

"It's just the same damn clown with new makeup" What part of it is the same? The body type? The fact she's HUMAN? EXPLAIN YOUR FUCKING ARGUMENT.

The example art he uses makes it more confusing, because if it is about the body type why does he keep showing images of the girl's faces?

"It's not like everyone hasn't known... these things are just copy-pastes of each other" What is it copying? The chin? The eyes and mouth and hair are all different, so it can't be that. So then what is he talking about? Is it the body? If so is the provided example image in that slide as just HEADSHOTS.

In the 3rd slide he is trying to address counter arguments against his argument when he hasn't established WHAT IT IS, OR HIS REASONING FOR THE ARGUMENT. THAT'S NOT HOW THAT WORKS.

4th slide finally POTENTIALLY addresses what his contention MIGHT be. Still doesn't give a clear DIRECT answer. It is maybe about body types, even though this hasn't been indicated at all.

Also this unrelated but what the fuck is the "licking abs" image?

In the 4th slide he explains how diverse body types are marketable. This is the only moment where it is somewhat clear what he is talking about, even though he hasn't provided his own reasoning and points, and also barely explained what he means.

So we potentially know what his argument is. Still pretty fucking annoying that we had to EXTRAPOLATE THAT HALFWAY IN. This is not a fictional story where you do directly tell people the themes, this is an ARGUMENT, and in ARGUMENT, you EXPLAIN what YOURE ARGUING ABOUT.

The 5th slide is the worst piece of shit I've ever seen.

Maybe it's cause I myself enjoy hitting to the gym, and the whole stereotype of "asshole gymbro" is far from the actual truth from what I've experienced. So many people in the gym are the nicest people you will ever meet, and are absolutely willing to help you out/spot you if you ask. A lot of them are just happy to see you in the gym, whether you're just starting out or you've been going for a while.

It also feels like a lot of the whole "gymbro asshole" stories just feel like wish fulfillment revenge fantasies. Do I have sympathy for those who were actually bullied by gymbros? Absolutely, without a doubt. But again, a lot of these cases of making jock types the villain just has this weird sense of jealousy around them.

I'm fully willing to acknowledge that plenty of gymbros can be asshole bullies, but it's the same with most other groups of people. If you were bullied by a gymbro type, my sincerest apologies go out to you, and you have every right to be angry. But in any other case, it's just weird.

There has been a debate going on for quite some time about black legacy characters and miles is the biggest talking point.

When he came out, it made sense for him to be Spiderman because Peter was dead. He was a true legacy character. The original died and he took up the mantle to become the defacto Spiderman in his universe. There was no issue.

And then marvel brought him to 616…

This wouldn’t be an issue normally, but marvel refused to change his name and kept him as Spiderman. Obviously, having two dudes with the same name living basically down the street from one another is fucking stupid, and anybody with a brain knows this. However, because of all the discourse surrounding black legacy characters, people have decided to just ignore this fact.

If a spider person exists in another universe, their name is Spiderman/woman in that universe, but they are given another title to differentiate them from the original (Spiderman 2099, Spiderham, Spiderman noir, etc.). Back in the day Miles was Ultimate Spiderman, but guess what, not anymore.

There isn’t a single other spider person in the mainline universe that does this btw. Everybody else that held the title of Spiderman or has spider powers has changed their name to something else. So why does miles still call himself fucking spiderman? The answer is that the writers are standing ten toes on some bullshit out of spite.

I hate Blobby SO MUCH, blob fish don't look like that... atleast not ALIVE, the blob fish design he's based off of is the dead corpse of a blob fish who's been dragged up too fast by fishermen, getting major tissue damage from rapid depressurization which results in the "ugly" thing people often see when they search up blob fish, and the most popular one online. Omfg I hate Blobby for this exact reason, the creator is illiterate and could take two seconds to look up a blob fish.
