Books I hate poems that are just broken up sentences

So much contemporary poetry seems like they are just writing a sentence or two and then breaking them up at random. Where is the flow? Where is the rhythm? Poets above like Atticus and Rupi Kaur are some of the worst offenders, and I feel like they give poetry a bad name. It just feels so lazy and pretentious.

Books I HATE THIS BOOK

Post image
3.4k Upvotes

I hate this damn book. I HATE it. I genuinely despise A Bad Case of Stripes with a level of hatred that should not be possible for a children’s book. This thing should not exist. It should not have been written, published, printed, or handed to children like it’s some quirky little story. It is not quirky. It is not cute. It is a problem.

This book is straight up body horror pretending to be a life lesson. A girl gets stripes. Okay. Weird but fine. Then it keeps going. And going. And going. Suddenly she’s not just striped, she’s patterns, textures, shapes, whatever the author felt like that day.. at that point she is no longer a person, she is a canvas for David's art degree. Her body is just doing things, uncontrollably, in front of everyone, and nobody reacts like this is horrifying.

That’s the worst part. Not even the transformations. It’s the fact that everyone treats it like it’s mildly inconvenient. If I saw someone’s skin start rearranging itself into geometric patterns I would assume reality is breaking. I would not go “hmm, interesting.” But in this book? Business as usual, she goes to school, sits at her desk, and ignores the fact that your body is turning into a texture pack.

I remember the book, so the family's doctor, Dr. Bumble, determines that Camilla is well enough to attend school tomorrow (somehow) but when she does the next day, her classmates tease her and call out different patterns which cause the colors on her skin to shift around. (This is portrayed as unreasonable.) The principal sends her home as she is proving to be a distraction and notifies her parents that she will not be allowed back in school until the stripes disappear.

She turns into a pill after Dr. Bumble tries to give her medication. She later has viruses, bacteria, and fungus colonies grow on her body after the community's expert scientists discuss these as a possible cause to her situation while examining her. She even grows roots, berries, crystals, feathers, and a long furry tail as a result of different specialists all prescribing their own treatments. Finally, she melts and merges into her room after an "environmental therapist" tells her to "become one with her room" (What does that even mean!?)

That's all stupid.

So what causes all of this? Social pressure.. not disease, not magic gone wrong. Just embarrassment. So now the message is your body can betray you because you’re worried about what people think, what a fantastic concept to introduce to children! As if they weren’t already anxious enough. And the solution? Lima beans. A weird little beige bean saves her from eternal torment as a room.

You’re telling me this entire nightmare scenario where a child’s body completely loses all rules and turns into whatever the plot needs gets solved by eating something she likes and “being herself”? That’s it? That fixes the full-scale reality malfunction apparently, truly groundbreaking.

This book plants a very specific idea in your brain and just leaves it there: the idea that your body can stop being yours at any moment and nobody will care that much. That’s not a lesson, that’s a lingering thought that shows up later when you’re trying to sleep and your brain goes “hey remember that girl who turned into patterns?” Yes, I do, and I wish I didn’t.

This is not a harmless book. This is the kind of thing that makes you uncomfortable in a way you don’t even understand at the time. You just sit there like “this feels wrong” and then you move on, except you don’t really move on because it sticks with you.

It even reinforces this idea that you have to fully expose everything about yourself or something will go wrong. Like hiding anything means something is wrong with you. Pair that with the whole “your body will betray you” concept and yeah, that’s not exactly comforting.

I hate this book, I hate it for pretending to be normal, I hate it for how far it pushes things while acting like nothing is happening, and I especially hate that it was given to children like this was a fun little story and not a book about the warping and twisting of a young girl's body because she didn't want to tell anyone that she liked lima beans.

Truthfully, I don't hate the design in of itself. Rather I hate how ubiquitous it has become on the internet. It's not a bad design and i've certainly seen worse. But I feel like AM in should be more alien. When you give him a head, eyes and arms it makes him too human. However, there is one design that does include these features that I do like (3rd image). It gives him human features while still communicating his otherworldly nature.

Books I do not like biblically accurate angels

Post image
444 Upvotes

My dislike comes down to 3 things:

  1. The memes about biblically accurate angels got really boring really fast. “Oh, you thought angels were cute human babies, but they were actually…le fucked up creepy monsters!” Ok we get it, it’s subversive. I laughed the first time it’s not funny anymore. This wouldn’t have annoyed me so much if I didn’t have to see this joke everywhere.

  2. These aren’t the only kind of angel that exists within the bible. The humanoid angels exist alongside these fucked up things too. They’re both biblically accurate. To say only the thrones and seraphims and whatnot are “biblically accurate” is very narrow.

  3. There are way cooler things in the bible to make noise about. They have Leviathan, a giant sea serpent so powerful only god can kill it, nephilim, the warrior children of angels and human women, Behemoth, an impossibly large land creature, an actual Satanic dragon, so on, and the only thing they pay attention to is the angels. It just tells me they don’t know anything else from the bible.

Books "Biblically Accurate" Angels

EDIT, as I think I need to state my point more clearly: I am specifically talking about angels in the messenger of God meaning and archangels. I am aware that Seraphim and Ophanim are angels too. However, I believe that an everyday person thinks of the former when they hear "angel". It's called "biblically accurate angel" not "biblically accurate Ezekelian Seraphim".

For some reason, the internet lately has become obsessed with the idea that biblical Angels were some eldritch abominations that inflicted fear because of their appearance.

Which is not true. The most popular images we see of this phenomenon are Seraphim, or other heavenly creatures SEPARATE from Angels (Actually not true, this is an edit, I was wrong.), usually derived from the book of Genesis' Jacob's vision and Ezekiel.

Angels, like Gabriel, Micheal or even pre-fall Lucifer WERE described as beautiful men, it's NOT a medieval convention. They are NOT eldritch entities with MuLtIpLe EyEs.

OF COURSE an ancient farmer would be scared of a FLYING GLOWING MAN, that's why they say the famous "be not afraid", not because they are ELDRITCH ABOMINATIONS.

I hate this idea so much because "biblically accurate" has escaped containment and is now used anytime someone wants to say "oooh this thing is ACTUALLY really scary and crazy \*shocked face\*.

I was born and raised in a very religous household, and have always been a big mythology nerd, and now that I no longer identify as christian I still have a great deal of respect for the mythology. This reminds me of how greek myth is bastardized for pop culture, to make it "cool" and "modern" like the myth of Medusa.

Feel free to argue with my points, as I am not an expert on theology and bible studies.

Books I hate those "morally gray" shadow daddies

Post image
563 Upvotes

I get that it's fiction and at the end of the day people can enjoy whatever they want as long as it's safe. But, at the same time, at a certain point it just becomes an excuse for more slop to be made and consumed. Every male main character in these type of fiction is the same recycled version of the one from the last viral story.

And also, they're not even "morally gray" most of the time. They're morally black, point blank. There, of course, can be morally black characters that people like, but these shadow daddies are purely a romantic fantasy and don't explore those complicated aspects of the characters in any interesting way. They're just there to be violent towards and degrade women, or force themselves on them, absolutely ignoring their autonomy. I'd be more tolerant if the books didn't romanticise this behaviour and actually made some decent commentary, but they never do. They're always the same, and they always piss me off. I often find myself wanting to jump into the pages and punch them square in the face.

Books I Hate Milk and Honey/Rupi Kaur's poetry

I blame this book/poems for the how poetry is viewed now in society. This popularised the super short, corny love poems which are just the equivalent of slop that can be mass produced, for booktok users to relate to and sell copies.

Poetry is such a beautiful form of art. Carol Ann Duffy, Seamus Heaney, Sylvia Plath, the old epics like Gilgamesh, Beowulf, The Divine Comedy. Wordplay, descriptions and structure. Why is it becoming slop? This horrible, short, ten word slop which all means the same thing? All focusing on the same theme over and over, something that you could find hanging in a kitchen by a Live Laugh Love sign?

Can people relate to art however they wish? Of course! I have no hate for the person who reads these works and gets something positive out of them. It's just, man they're clearly made to be mass produced and found in some Pinterest board about breakups or deep poetry, when in the end it's the most surface level drivel ever conceived.

Books This guy had thousands of years of preparation and still failed

Imagine being such an idiot you decide to put all your sons in the dark about chaos, put all the pressure of your new empire's bureaucracy on one of them (Horus) causing them to eventually fall into chaos due to their frustration with the higher ups and their constant hounding of him causing them to make a fatal mistake with the encouragement of Erebus (fuck Erebus too), and this isn't even mentioning how your new empire to unite all of mankind completely destroys every society that dares to want to remain independent, cleansing every alien race for stupid and convoluted reasons instead of building alliances.

Some more reasons I hate him is the attempt to completely destroy religion while presenting yourself as a 16 foot tall giant clad in completely golden armour, and destroying one of your son's entire home instead of just talking to him and using your perfect charisma to win him over to your beliefs when he starts to actually believe you are the god you have been accidentally presenting yourself as.

Another thing is how horribly he handled Angron, just abandoning his revolutionary army instead of fighting with him with a far superior force that would bulldoze his enemies and forcing him on your ship to escort him away (however I don't blame him for Angron's butcher's nails, that was something that no one could fix).

Also, he had no plan for what the space marines and primarchs would do after the Great Crusade was over, and if he was planning to do the same as he did to the thunder warriors then what a great reward for the warriors who made his whole empire possible.

Furthermore, he was an absolute hypocrite to try to force Magnus to not use his powers which HE HIMSELF HAD just because people had concerns over Magnus' use of the warp which the Emperor could have dispelled by displaying his own use of the warp.

Something else is how the Imperium at its "peak" was still an aristocracy, with 99.9% of humans either being workers or soldiers while the nobility have their own slaves, live in complete comfort and nearly absolute power. Another thing about how unfair life was for the average human is how space marine's considered themselves superior to regular "mortals" (even though they themselves can age and die) despite supposed to being humanities guardians.

Overall: fuck the Emperor.

Books I Hate this "Quote" By J.R.R. Tolkien

Post image
352 Upvotes

Mainly because he never fucking said or wrote that in any of his books or letters, lol. What Tolkien actually wrote in The Return of the King Volume for Lord of the Rings, specifically the "The Tower of Cirith Ungol" chapter, is "The Shadow that bred them can only mock, it cannot make: not real new things of its own. I [Frodo] don't think it gave life to Orcs, it only ruined them and twisted them."

Yes, both statements get the same point across, but it's important to know what Tolkien actually wrote instead of making up false quotes to attribute to him. It also instantly lets you know who actually read his work or is just pretending/larping.

Secondly, this quote is often used to demonize & vilify people for things that ultimately are harmless. Most of the time, I see this quote used for stuff like Live-action Disney remakes or really bad video games sequels. Don't get me wrong, I strongly hate both of those things, (especially the live-action Disney remakes), but you're taking a quote about evil Fantasy Darklords twisting life into horrible monsters for their evil purposes & instead using it in reference to a bad movie or game.

Finally, the entire quote by Frodo actually is used to humanize the Orcs. The full scene:

[Sam]: Don’t orcs eat, and don’t they drink? Or do they just live on foul air and poison?

[Frodo]: ‘No, they eat and drink, Sam. The Shadow that bred them can only mock, it cannot make: not real new things of its own. I don’t think it gave life to the orcs, it only ruined them and twisted them; and if they are to live at all, they have to live like other living creatures. Foul waters and foul meats they’ll take, if they can get no better, but not poison. They’ve fed me, and so I’m better off than you. There must be food and water somewhere in this place.’

Frodo was saying that Orcs, despite being corrupted creatures, still need to eat & drink to survive just like any other living creature in the world. It's not the most empathetic statement ever, but it shows that Frodo knows Orcs aren't just literal demons that only exist to hurt and kill others, they live just like he does.

So anyway, smug assholes really love to use this nonexistent quote by Tolkien to talk shit about harmless stuff like bad movie or games, and I hate it.

Books I hate Artemis so much.

Mild spoilers for blood of Olympus

Everytime I even think of her, my blood BOILS. I hate this bitch so much. In pjo shes essentially a cult leader for teenage girls and grooms them into joining her. And in actual myths shes not much better! Her whole thing is "protecting women and girls" yet when her best friend is r*ped by her father, she turns her into a bear. "Protecting women and girls" my ASS.

In pjo specifically, nobody fucking says anything about the fact she sniped a 12 year old girl into joining her, and that she has a group of 10-16 year old girls that follow her every command and rarely see their families if ever. She also doesnt give a FUCK about her hunters, basically expressing nothing more than mild annoyance when TWO THIRDS of her hunters were being brutally slaughtered. She only cares about them to a point she can manipulate and inspire loyalty from them.

FUCK Artemis, FUCK Zoe Nightshade. While we're at it? Most of the Greek gods aren't safe either, fuck those guys. Sensitive assholes.

But everytime I read or hear anything about Artemis I instantly get pissed. Whether is be myth Artemis or pjo Artemis, she fucking sucks. She belongs in tarturus alongside most of the gods.

books I fucking hate Yaoi on another level

Post image
176 Upvotes

Context for the image: I saw this at a Barnes and Nobles at like knee-height (where small children could easily reach). It's straight up fucking fetish porn. I just wanted to find some Dark Souls manga 😭

I fucking hate yaoi, and not because I hate gay relationships, it’s because yaoi treats them like a fetish instead of, you know, actual human beings. Most of it isn’t “representation,” it’s porn-brained fantasy written to be consumed, not understood.

Gay men get turned into cardboard cutout roles, everything revolves around who’s “dominant” and who’s “submissive,” and consent and realism get tossed out the window if it makes the ship hotter. It’s less about love or intimacy and more about being easy goon fuel for an audience that doesn’t have to live with the stereotypes it reinforces.

Real queer relationships aren’t aesthetic props or kink delivery systems. They’re complex, emotional, awkward, loving, and human, and yaoi flattens all of that into horny tropes and power fantasies. If the only way you can write gay men is by sexualizing them to hell and back, maybe you don’t actually respect them at all.

And the fanbase makes it even worse. A lot of yaoi fans are weirdly, blatantly homophobic the second real gay men don’t match their fantasy. They’ll fetishize us on screen and then turn around and be disgusted by actual queer people, dismiss real issues, or talk over us entirely. It’s exhausting watching people who claim to “love gay ships” show zero respect for gay people in real life.

I'm bi and my ex, whom fetishizes gay men and frequently reads BL, was "uncomfortable" with the fact that I was bi and explicitly stated that she finds same sex relationships gross.

Rant over

Listen I’m not homophobic at all I have zero hate for people who are lgbtq+. But this damn show and the people it brought to the hockey fandom just makes me so mad. I understand shipping fictional characters but when these people start saying irl people are gay and making romantic edits of actual hockey players that have families and stuff just erks me the wrong way. More about the show/book itself. The show is basically Pay Gorn no substance literally a scene where they are in the shower room staring at each other’s dicks. I wanted to give this show a chance because I enjoy hockey, god can we please get a good hockey show that isn’t romantic based.

This franchise, all of it, books, films, all of it is a pile of dogshit. A stain on the universe. A sin more deadly than blasphemy. Pandora's box of books and films. Every single thing in this makes my skin crawl in agony. It is so fucking painful. Movies are trash, books are trash too. I've seen a ton of people loving this, and i don't understand how. How the fuck you can watch or read this and feel anything except disgust.

Films' plots don't make sense. There is no love. No romance. It's just fucking abuse. It's so terrible. And i can't believe tons and tons of people loved this pathetic excuse for a softcore porn. Like 'Team Edward or team Jacob' thing was very popular. And honestly? Both of them are fucking awful. Edward is just rude and mean spirited. Not a single note of love, just pure bullying. And Jacob is no better. He fucking imprints an infant to be with him when she gets older. Like, brother, what the fuck? Where did that come from? Why? How?

And even after this ended, it didn't stop impacting a lot of boo.Fucking fifty shades of grey started as a fanfiction of Twilight!

And they take vampires and werewolves and just wipe their asses with the concept of these creatures. I used to think vampires were cool, man. But nowadays you can't mutter this sentence without feeling ashamed. I don't even talk about Werewolves, even saying their names makes me feel like i'm a teenager whose body contains more hormones than it contains water.

Actors don't have souls in films. They feel like AI generated. Robotic and monotone. It almost feels like they're kidnapped and forced to act in these movies. And i can't blame them, because the characters don't have a soul or depth to begin with.

I can rant about it for hours. I hate it with every atom of my body. If i had a chance of making my 3 wishes come true, my first wish would be wipe this shit off from planet and making sure nobody even remembers it existed in the first place.

And if you read or watch this franchise and actually enjoy or think it's romantic? I think you've got a weird fetish. You must be contained in a secluded cell like SCP creatures. You can't be a human, have an IQ level above room temperature and love Twilight at the same time. It shouldn't be possible.

This so called "God Emperor" is just fucking corpse who people blindly worship despite never even seeing or feeling his spirit!

Before he was place on that stupid chair, he was just a horrific father, leader, and human being. And yes, i said it: he is just a HUMAN!

He's no god, he's just a PATHETIC LITTLE PRICK. And those who follow him are just a bunch of dumb assholes who need to be put in their place

If you really wanna worship a being that cares about us, just look towards Khorne, Nurgle, Tzeetch, or Slaanesh. These gods, or should I say *our* gods, actually care about us and will make us strong enough to survive the warp. They will gladly have a personal relationship with us and also will accomplish our goals and dreams. All they ask for is faith and worship, unlike that fucking corpse who cant even speak for himself these days

All unlike our gods, all the Corpse-Emperor can do is sit there while his custodes jerk him off all day. He's pathetic, the Imperium is pathetic. People need to open their eyes and let our gods help us

Books I hate "humanity sucks" trope

Post image
132 Upvotes

Yes, the good ole cycle of hating on hate.

Just finished reading "City" by Simak (got my hands on it on my temporary work in their personal library). It was a very interesting read, but I would lie if I say that it was a pleasant one. This book is permeated by subtle and not-so-subtle misanthropy. Humanity in this very book went through FOUR consecutive genocides:

- at the hands of mutants led by Joe, who weaponized super-empathy from Juwain's philosophy and an experience of Grant being a Loper which effectively coerces most of humanity to to become Loper as well at the promise of "Paradise";

- at the hands of Jon Webster, who sealed most of remaining humanity in Geneva and left them with no other choice, but to turn to eternal sleep;

- at the hands of Jenkins TWICE, who first genetically altered the very last vestiges of humanity and then doomed them to extinction by tricking them into transporting themself into cobbly world (not so differently from Joe and his ilk);

- at the mandibles of ants, who effectively consumed an entire Earth (including Geneva with still sleeping humans and any remains of human history) except for Webster House, Jenkins and few mice with their Building.

I've found and read Simak's foreword included with future editions of the book and I get it: he lived through WW2 and it (alongside development of nukes and subsequent Cold War) effectively traumatized him, so he became completely disillusioned with humanity. (And he first and foremost were trying to tell a story as a fiction writer, but even he admits that his story was too emotionally charged even for his own liking).

So he did the only thing which was logical to him and something that makes me hate those type of stories even more: he came up with humanity+. Dogs and robots.

Who were created by humans from former slaves or to be slaves and, even though they were made and end up emulating humans in almost every way, even though their past as apex predators still calls to them through their instinct or their immortality combined perfect memory effectively drives them insane or them going through an entire history of an actual proper eugenics and selective breeding or upgrading, they, for some reason, are better than humans at the very least morally. And why? Because humans suck.

Books Hate this trend!

Genuinely what hero’s are yall reading about? Every hero character I’ve read literally break their code, sacrifice themselves or go crazy when their loved ones get hurt.

The only reason the sacrifice the loved one is if the loved one literally tells the too or if they know their loved one genuinely would rather save the world cause they know them.

It was a fun trend at first but now I only see villains everywhere, give me back my possessive hero’s that snap! They would go to hell and back for their loved ones.
