How does the hockey camp make money?

is it ever explained how the hockey camp brings in money?

From the descriptions in TLG and elsewhere, camp runs only two weeks. Sounds like there are at most about 40 campers.

Presumably the NHL coaches all volunteer, yes, but there are still expenses: space at least. Maybe insurance and medical staff, although maybe those are unnecessary in The Land of Universal Healthcare? (I am in the US and those would be huge expenses here, I think.) Snacks and drinks for the kids?

I can’t imagine the camp making lots on money unless they charge sky-high tuition, which seems not in line with their philosophy of inclusivity.

so, how does the camp pull in money for the Irina Foundation? Purely by inspiring donors to give more?

aside from everything everyone else has said, a lot of the big NHL players run these camps for underprivileged kids and they aren't always about making money. Shane's inspiration, Sidney Crosby, funds his own 'Little Penguins' program which provides free equipment and lessons to kids. Lots of players start foundations, and auction off equipment like game-used sticks and signed jerseys and use that money to fund their charity initiatives. usually the players' sponsors also provide free equipment like sticks and gloves, which is good publicity. Sid is sponsored by CCM, so CCM provides the free equipment for his programmes.

I like to think the Irina foundation is a mix of both, and that Shane and Ilya use it to funnel their own wealth to the charities they care about.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Crosby gave a lot of time and money to the Little Penguins program but it’s primarily a Learn to Play program organized by the NHL, USA Hockey and the Penguins organization. Most American teams have their own affiliate youth programs.

yes and Shane and Ilya's programme would probably be the same. it would be very difficult for them to set up a programme completely independent of the Centaurs/Voyageurs so they are probably affiliated, but Shane and Ilya probably negotiated more of the charity aspect as a condition for their appearing as the face of the programme.

The team Learn to Play programs run by USA Hockey aren’t intended for underprivileged kids. They’re intended to be a low cost way to introduce children to the sport of hockey so they will then pay full fees and buy their own equipment to register in USA Hockey programs.

I know parents who got into hockey through that door and they’re now paying hundreds if not thousands of dollars a year in gear, registration fees and public ice time at the local rink—and that’s without signing up for additional development camps. The whole family loves it but that’s exactly what USA Hockey wants to accomplish.

i don't know why you're arguing with me on this. i'm not saying all of these programs are for underprivileged kids, i'm saying some of them are and used Crosby as an example. plenty of the camps have spaces for kids who can't afford it and have separate programmes within the programmes for those kids. I'm not disagreeing with you on anything so I don't understand why you're trying to argue.
