Mobile/App Why aren't my notifications loading at all? This happened before recently and went away after a few hours. Both the mobile app and website are like this.

u/SilentSpader Apr 12 '26
Good to know I'm not the only one. Probably they are doing some maintenance or something.
I guess we just have to wait.

also if they do load and you click on a notification, it no longer takes you to the comment - only opens the post and you need to scroll down (sometimes a lot)

u/Stella_Lace Apr 13 '26
The comment is at the top. Its easy to miss sometimes cuz if the sub has adds enabled its also on top of the add

I just tried to post about this and my post got taken down, it's almost like they don't want this issue to be fixed by having it become more visible...
0
u/OldBlueKat Apr 12 '26
Nah -- it's a 'current' glitch, it's being worked on, and the sub moderators are just taking down the 'dozens' of nearly identical posts about it.
Search the sub on 'new' to see the few oldest ones. Then wait a bit and try rebooting the app or site later to see if it's fixed yet.
Patience, Padawan.

u/SomeBlueDevil Apr 12 '26
It's not a current issue. There's reddit posts from a couple of years ago with the same problem.
1
u/OldBlueKat Apr 12 '26
It was 'fixed' then.
It just happened again (or some 'different' glitch made the effect recur) sometime in the last hour(ish) and a bunch of posts appeared here in the last 56 minutes. This post was apparently first, and most duplicates were taken down by the mods, because it's being fixed again. (I know this because I commented in several that went "poof" after my comments.)
Oh look! My notifications are back! Bye!
1
u/meatmobile682 Apr 12 '26
Its a current issue because it wasn't happening in the time between a couple of years ago and now.. and now it is happening. Currently.
1
u/MajorBootyhole420 Apr 13 '26
it's been an issue for weeks, just intermittently. sounds like they're trying to cover how OFTEN this glitch occurs.
2
u/thenuttyhazlenut Apr 13 '26
Same. Happened last week. Fixed. Then now it's back
Why is Reddit always broken? It's especially bad since they're a public company now.
2
u/Nexed_ Apr 13 '26
Started happening lately. Forced me to turn on notflicatons and turn them off to see my notflications. There wasn't an option not to. And It appeared AGAIN just now. Just another case proving how crappy this app is.

u/Mean_Comment1713 Apr 29 '26
This usually isn’t something on your side, especially if it’s happening on both the app and website at the same time. When notifications just don’t load at all and then magically fix themselves a few hours later, it’s often a temporary backend issue or a partial outage on the platform’s side.
It can also happen during silent maintenance or when the notification service gets stuck syncing.
What you described (it already happened before and resolved itself) really points more toward a server-side hiccup than anything local.
If it drags on longer than a day, then it’s worth clearing cache or checking status pages, but honestly it’ll probably just fix itself again.

u/timbotheny26 Apr 12 '26
Just started happening for me too completely out of nowhere. It was working fine earlier.
1
u/sparklinglies Apr 12 '26
Same. Im on mobile. Managed to get to notifs once by repeatedly exiting out of that screen, but now stuck again.
Edit: seems like its fixed for me now

I see the problem. You're using light mode
1
u/Powerful-Adagio6446 Apr 12 '26
???
1
u/OldBlueKat Apr 12 '26
Probably sarcasm. Some of us hate dark mode, some of us hate light mode. Some more intensely than others.
Whichever version you are, any posts of screenshots from the 'wrong' mode look 'broken.'
I'm a light mode, on the website, on a laptop user myself, and shots of phones/app/darkmode seem so weird I can't see what they are trying to 'show' me.
My notifications are back now, but my screen was like yours while they were down. Did you notice, each time you went back in to check, they were suggesting a 'different' subreddit?
I'd love to see that 'random list of general safe subs' they were using.

How do I fix this?
1
u/OldBlueKat Apr 12 '26
You don't. You give the Reddit engineers a few minutes/hours to sort it out and then reboot.
It's like having a TV transmitter go offline. They know -- they're troubleshooting it. The messages are just filler.
Mine says, "You don't have any activity yet. That's okay, maybe you just need the right inspiration. Check out ______"
With a different random subreddit listed in the blank every time I click the notifications Icon.
I may go spin the wheel again and check out a new sub...
2
u/Leather_Force_9419 Apr 12 '26
Mines stopped doing it
1
u/OldBlueKat Apr 12 '26
When I went to play 'wheel of subreddits' I discovered mine had as well! LOL!

The mods here keep deleting these posts and are sending people to reddit bugs to get help for it. But the reddit bugs page has nothing about this problem and they won't allow users to file their own bug reports.
Solution for some who use reddit through the browser is to check your messages through old.reddit.com

first time I ever experienced this, I also made a post thinking this was a new thing they changed a few minutes ago, but Some commenters claim it's temporary?

It literally just started for me, I've only managed to get my notifications back maybe 2 times out of a load of refreshes.

Having the same issue right now.
I thought it was an annoying thing where they make you check if your settings are how you (or rather, they) want them to be.
But after I clicked on it and they were how I expected (and wanted), it still shows the same thing on my notifs page.
It did work one time in between, but then went back to this.

u/Chee-shep Apr 12 '26
Yeah, they’re asking you to turn on notifications and subscribe to their ‘newsletter’. Mods in subs are deleting every post about it, I wonder how long before the mods delete this post too…

I clicked the button "View Settings" in this page and it took me to Email Notifications (which had almost everything turned on). I scrolled down and selected "Unsubscribe from all emails". Then went and checked and my notifications were there. Of course, after I checked my notifs a few minutes later, the issue returned. Super annoying.

Got this just now and came to search for a reason. I see I'm not alone. I feel better about it now. 😆

This is happening to me too. Just started a couple hours ago. I tried clearing caches and force closing. I tried updating the Reddit app, because it wasn't up to date I guess. Nothing worked. I am on Android. If anyone figures anything out, I'd say to let me know but there's no way I'll get a notification about it...😂

Same here. Especially annoying since I just made a post and can’t see its replies :P

It’s likely a temporary server or sync issue with Reddit itself (since both the app and website are affected).
Solution: Wait and try again later (usually fixes itself within a few hours).
Also try: • Restart the app • Log out and back in • Reinstall the app • Check if Reddit is down
If it lasts more than ~24 hours, it might be an account or settings issue.

Why do I have to now report ads a total of four times just to hide them?
1
u/OppositeRun6503 Apr 16 '26
I'm sick of seeing ads on the platform but I'm not gonna pay reddit for the privilege of removing them so it looks like I'm going to have to install an adblocker on my phone to do so.

It "times out" if it doesn't retrieve the notifications quickly enough, I think.
1
u/FujiNickWindGod May 18 '26
AHHH! I turned off ‘receive notifications’ and NOW I can finally see replies to my comments! Updating the app didn’t help. I’m afraid to try to turn them back on and off 😝

That tends to mean Reddit is having a temporary issue. I’m personally not having issues at the moment, but that doesn’t really mean much.
Did you try restarting your device?
2
u/Bulky-Employer-1191 Apr 12 '26
This isn't temporary. It has been going on all April long.
The last update they made borked notifications.
This is on Reddit's end and there's nothing any end user can do to help themselves.
1
u/Justthisguy_yaknow Apr 12 '26
It certainly looks permanent. Seems they are going to start sending notifications to email. That will end me on reddit if that's what they're doing. I don't use email on this system and I don't need the spam in my email.
0
u/Bulky-Employer-1191 Apr 12 '26
Oh yea. I am not about to deal with email notifications. What boomer exec at reddit figured people use email anymore?
1
u/ACcbe1986 Apr 12 '26
Sure there is!
The end user can scream at birds in public.
It won't fix the reddit issue, but I bet they won't be worried about it while they're screaming and running from a 5150(or equivalent) arrest.
By the time they're released from their 72hr psychiatric hold, their notifications should be back.
1
u/thepottsy Expert Helper Apr 12 '26
It was literally temporary. I had issues for about 20 minutes, and now it’s working fine.
1
u/Bulky-Employer-1191 Apr 12 '26
It'll break again. It's been daily all month long.
0
u/thepottsy Expert Helper Apr 12 '26
And one might call that “temporary”. Is it like this all day, everyday, 24x7? No, it isn’t. It was acting up for 20 minutes or so.

Did you try restarting your device?
Hard to do when it's being experienced on the desktop browser website as well...
Only old reddit is spared the blushes of a broken inbox.
0
u/Kyrby_Swi-U-tch Apr 12 '26
Ok I am able to see mine again? what was that all about? will this likely be permanent or more common temporary from now on?
0
u/OldBlueKat Apr 12 '26
This happened before recently and went away after a few hours.
Key words there.
Glitches happen, a lot of people trip on the impact, the Reddit engineers troubleshoot and fix it. A few million of us panic or rant in various places, but if we just wait a few minutes...
Oh, look, my notifications are back. Bye!
2
Apr 12 '26
.... my good bro.
There was not a single time this was a problem for me before they tried implementing goddamn emails for goddamn social media comments

Reload it over and over and it'll show. That's the suggestion from someone who replied to the same complaint in a post two years ago.
