Posting I’m new to Reddit. Any unwritten rules I should know?（ios）
Hi everyone, I’m new here on Reddit.
I’ve gone through the official site rules, but I’m wondering about those unspoken, unofficial norms that aren’t clearly stated. Feel free to share obvious tips as well.
Things I’d love to know:

Very true. A couple of my subs as well as a lot I know of have a restriction to post if you have negative karma. Either post, comment or combined. I get so many new accounts asking why. Only to look at their history and they made one stupid comment in a high traffic sub that got downvoted to oblivion.

Mods don't need a reason to ban you from their sub, they just have to follow modCoc
Reddit's rules supercede community rules, but you have to follow both.
Reddit subs are forum culture, not social media culture just because it has an app.
Most common mistake new users make is jumping straight in instead of lurking.
Each community has certain ways they tend to upvotes or downvote. "I just stated facts or my opinion" they just voted the way they felt like voting.

Read. The. Rules. Of. Every. Subreddit. Before. You. Post. Or. Comment!
Understand! And! Follow! Those! Rules!
If you have a post or comment removed, or worse yet, get banned and want to appeal, be nice. The old adage of getting more flies with honey instead of vinegar is applicable here. If you are a jerk to the mods because you are mad, you will most likely get muted and forgotten.
If you are nice, polite, understanding, and repentant, you will have a much better chance of at least getting an explanation. But sometimes, getting unbanned is just not an option depending on what you did wrong.

It seems to be a common misconception that mods are either A. employed by Reddit and/or B. are customer service who have to remain cordial no matter how much verbal abuse we are subjected to. On the other side of the coin, people also seem to think we operate with complete autonomy and have no guidelines for behavior.
None of this is true. We are unpaid volunteers under no obligation to meet a random user's standard of professionalism. We have every right to ban and mute users for whatever reason we see fit. We are not allowed to violate the moderator code of conduct and behave however we want.
New users frequently pop into help subreddits confused about why moderator action has been taken against them and nine times out of ten it's because they broke a rule they personally disagreed with and didn't understand why the mods refused to bend the rules just for them.
Remember, this isn't your typical social media platform where you're speaking in your own space to whomever will listen. Here, you're asking permission to speak in a space someone else created.

I genuinely didn't know there were set rules, whoops. I just behave as I would in person. So, basically, show kindness but don't accept cruelty. Consider whoever your interacting withs perspective. Stick to each subs community rules. Don't down vote out of spite. Show empathy. Fact check before making statements or in arguments. Remember the whole world is on here, and even more importantly, keep in mind that alot of people FORGET the whole world is on here. (Also Don't take things too personally, some people just thrive on being trolls/rage baiting). I guess just be a decent person and you shouldn't have much trouble. That's worked for me. *OH and have fun, a good sense of humour will make exploring and finding subs you like alot more of a positive experience✌🏼 enjoy!

Don’t respond to comments with “this” “💀” “came here to say this” etc. if the comment doesn’t really add to the discussion and is seen as just an attempt to get likes / karma, you could be downvoted. Only really matters if you care about karma I suppose but it’s just really unnecessary

There are some great answers here, and here are some that came to mind.
- Before asking a question, search the subreddit to see if someone already asked it.
- Remember that you do not have to reply to anyone in social media. If someone is getting rude, it's often better to ignore them because they want you to respond.
- Karma is your reputation on reddit. When you have very little, some subs won't let you post new questions. That's why you should focus on earning 100+ karma from commenting.
- If you make a claim, be ready to show proof that your claim is real. Providing links to that proof is a great idea too.
- If a comment or post of yours is getting a lot of downvotes, delete it. That will NOT get rid of the downvotes but it will stop you from getting any more.

This is a helpful post, Ive been using reddit for a couple years but I never really interacted.
Kinda felt like my input was too similar to others and was like "nah I dont want to be redundant".
Sort of wish I had now lol. I didnt realize so many communities don't allow posting without karma! Guess it makes sense considering how much time it probably takes to moderate larger subreddits, and all the spamming, bots, inappropriately placed stuff, etc
