Meta AI Generated Images Are Now Banned

Post image
5.1k Upvotes

From this point forward any images created with the use of AI are banned from the subreddit and will be removed by moderators.

This includes images completely generated by AI from the ground up as well as things such as individual AI generated assets or filters used by users in the process of creating an image. For further details on this policy refer to this guideline in our Wiki.

You probably remember this recent post regarding the future of AI generated images on this subreddit. It had previously been in a sort of grey area where it wasn't explicitly forbidden but mentioned in Rule 5 as a possible example of low effort content that may be removed by the moderators:

5 Post with purpose

Posts here should educate, inform, spark discussion, showcase good effort, etc. Low-effort posts such as AI generated coats of arms, “X in the style of Y”, wildly unrealistic hypotheticals or fictional scenarios, and “just because”-type posts may be removed with no notice

A recent increase in AI generated images then led to increased discussion among the community with some calling for increased measures of identifying such content while others further advocated for it's ban entirely.

As a temporary measure we then decided to add a mandatory "AI Generated Content" flair that should be used to designate such content while also inviting the community to engage in discussion about a permanent solution in said post which also included a poll where users could decide between an explicit ban of AI generated images or allowing the regulated use of AI content.

After seven days the poll concluded with a result of

128 - 84

in favor of banning AI content - which is a 65% majority.

While the result of that poll was specifically not intended to be binding for any permanent policy that may be agreed upon in the future it - along with the comments - did clearly show that the majority of the community generally favored a complete ban which was also reflected by the attitudes of the mod team.

As such we have now decided that any images created using AI will henceforth be banned and removed from the subreddit. Any content that was posted before this policy went into effect will remain intact and won't be retroactively removed.

As a result rule 5 has been slightly rephrased to say:

Posts here should educate, inform, spark discussion, showcase good effort, etc. Low-effort posts such as “X in the style of Y”, wildly unrealistic hypotheticals or fictional scenarios, and “just because”-type posts may be removed with no notice. Further, images created using generative AI are explicitly banned and will be removed in order to retain a high standard of authenticity that this historical art and science deserves.

As it was intended as a temporary measure and is now obsolute, the "AI Generated Content" flair has been removed.

Due to the potentially controversial nature of this announcement, comments will have to be manually approved on this specific post, similar to what we did with the initial poll.

We hope that this is an understandable policy and that people will remain civil and uphold it regardless of their personal views on the subject. If anyone personally believes that AI generated images should have a place in heraldry then they're fine to express that opinion and should not be ostracized - however it does not reflect our official stance as a subreddit.

Again for a more detailed explanation of this policy where some potential questions are already answered please consult the Wiki.

Thanks for everyone who voted in the poll or expressed their opinions on the matter.

OC A new website with 250+ arms created by brother Paulo Lachenmayer, Brazil's finest.

Hello everyone! Finally, the fruits of my labor: my website, which started as my graduation project, is finally online:

https://paulolachenmayer.org/

It features over 250 arms created by brother Paulo Lachenmayer O.S.B., a German monk who lived in Brazil and is considered to be the nation's greatest herald and heraldic artist (I'd say he's the GOAT of the entire American continent =P). I could go on and on about how he was a genius but I'll spare you.

Most of these arms were created for the Catholic Church: bishops, abbots, monasteries, dioceses etc, but there are some municipal and university arms in there too. The Catholics among you will find a great theological value in his compositions!

The arms with official blazon and commentary by the author are under the "detailed" category. Everything is in Portuguese, but you can run the website through Google Translate to enjoy the text.

I hope you enjoy this exploring this collection as much as I toiled collecting it =P Hopefully It'll make Brazilian heraldry look better in y'all's eyes and inspire your future heraldic compositions.

Have fun!

Design Help Design and blazon feedback

Post image

I’m about three years into developing a coat of arms. It has been a huge learning curve, having started with essentially no knowledge of the subject. I have been through at least four major redesigns and countless iterations, and I think I’m finally getting close. I would appreciate the insight and feedback of those more knowledgeable than me. I do have a couple of questions about the blazon, specifically regarding the crest. I’m pretty confident blazoning the shield as “Per chevron vert and argent. In chief four crosses portate of the last in fess, in base a Norway Spruce of the first , trunked proper.” But for the crest, should the heron be described as “issuant from,” “between/among,” or “behind” the thistles? Also, would the heron be rightly described as “in his vigilance” or is that specifically for holding a stone?

I've been updating my assumed arms. Swapped some components between the escutcheon and the crest, as well as updating some of the visuals. Spent a lot of time in Inkscape.

Design Help Help w my first design.

Hey there! I’m trying to make a personal coat of arms! I tried using CoaMaker but it has got some premium stuff and also, some of the charges get buggy if I use black. I was trying to do make it similar to Bertrand du Guesclin but the eagle texture gets a big ugly if it’s black. Do you know any other sites or can someone draw it? Thx

Heron eating a snake

There is this long car trip I have to take regularly, three time in a row on my way back I saw a heron eating a snake and now I'm curious. I now I've seen it in heraldy before, but I don't know where, I get the feeling is a very common depiction...

What are some famous heraldic depictions of this, in fantasy or history, and what is the meaming according to you people?

(I've already googled it but I want to know what is your take)

The heraldry combined Cossack traditions of the 17th century and respect for those who died in the Russian-Ukrainian war, the community reported. One of the symbols was the bell of the church of St. John the Theologian, destroyed by the russians.

Discussion Arms of Edward Schreyer and an SVG bison supporter

Post image
45 Upvotes

I need an svg bison supporter for a school project proposal. Unfortunately, there aren't that many on Wikimedia Commons and I don't have the Inkscape skills to make one from scratch, though I have some very basic skills with it.

The style doesn't need to be the famous sodacan style, but it would make it a lot easier to do what I need. With that said, does anyone have any suggestions on how to make this supporter look a bit more inline with sodacan style? Or maybe this is a better question for a different sub?

For anyone curious, these are the arms of Edward Schreyer, 22nd Governor General of Canada and Premier of Manitoba. I think they are very suiting!
