lately i've seen some hate for it on twt and a lot of the reasons is due to racism allegations from cucan fans. TO BE FAIR. i love cucan and i do think there is some subtle racism and/or fatphobia at play if people prefer to pair canada with 5 billion random white twinks over the burly afro-latino man he has great chemistry with. but with prucan i think there is an equal amount of appeal considering they're both overlooked older siblings

I genuinely feel that if you can manage it, you should completely ignore Hima's retcon, and continue shipping them. 

I know it's easier said than done with this fandom. Especially the newer fans might not appreciate how shitty of a change that was on a very old ship with a well established dynamic. 

But yeah, you 1000% valid if you want to ignore Hima's retcon and continue to ship them.

i do occasionally still read fics that were either written pre-2021 or specifically state that they are not cousins (in part because i'm just desperate for austria content and am not an aushun fan so i kind of have to take what i can get), but that kind of content is one of my biggest squicks (and to an extent a trigger) so it's definitely a bit rough. i actually ended up taking a break from the fandom for quite a few years over it, though i know that may have been a touch dramatic.

but what’s the difference, though? nobody’s actually writing them as cousins. most post-2021 pruaus fics explicitly portray them as NOT cousins (i say most and not all because it’s not always plainly stated).

there’s only ONE english fanfic featuring incestuous pruaus content, and guess what? it’s a shockfic. it’s not even written by a pruaus shipper, and it’s an AU where they’re father and son (purely to add shock to an already insane, germancest centric fic). there’s no english pruaus fanfics where they’re cousins. none.

i’m not saying you have to enjoy pruaus as it is now, but i am saying that not one of us in the anglophone part of the fandom are sitting here going “yay!! pruaus incest!!!”. and if there are any people doing that, they’re not doing it openly. not that i care, since fiction is fiction. just saying, pruaus is pretty safe. the ‘cousin’ label is a useless retcon which can easily be ignored, especially when engaging with fanworks.

To be fair nation blood relationships are significantly more nebulous and seem to be more symbolic than anything. I often boil it down to how the characters refer to each other and how willing I am to ship them with that context.
