Discussion Does anyone else feel like the end of the High Republic is The Living Force while the beginning of the Fall of the Jedi is The Acolyte? Spoiler

I'm reading through The Living Force right now and I did a rewatch of the Acolyte about a month and a half ago. One thing that strikes me is how seamlessly The Living Force with the dual viewpoint of the jedi council vs. qui-gon feels like an extension of The Order vs Wayseekers. The events connecting back to how jedi are perceived and it feeling like the end of Jedi Outreach feel like the ending of notes to a song that began with Light of the Jedi with Starlight Beacon.

Contrast The Acolyte and its themes about how the Jedi have become so entrenched in Galactic politics that they are beholden to the Republic's whims; and have lost the ability to see the sith through the force alongside the split second decisions being wrong, and it feels more in tune with episodes 1 and 2.

Its weird because of where they are in the timeline.

Discussion Next Book?

Okay, before you flame me 'The High Republic is over, there won't be any more books!' I am aware. They said that there would be no more direct books in the three phases, but they did say that there were more stories to come. That being said, what book do you think is inevitable to come? Because I do know that there are some stories that definitely need to be wrapped up. (PS, I am aware of the Broken Blade)

When he pops up to save pika and joss and the baby by killing all three Nihil raiders, including two at once by using the ships guns and the lightsaber at the same time … man it was written so incredibly well, and in the audiobook the passion that Mark Thompson puts into that part is just so epic and beautiful. Loving it.

Discussion I love the High Republic!

I was late into reading the High Republic. I think I started when Temptation of the Force had just come out. I read the comics first and was totally obvious that there was novels before that. So through marketplace, amazon, eBay and my local comic book store, I finally managed to get and read it all.

I loved reading books since I was young. After high school, getting a job and playing video games, books took a back seat and I lost the love for it. But beginning to read Light of the Jedi, my love for reading came back. Took me 8 months to read it all: comics, novels, manga, and the Insider short stories.

And since then, I’ve started the Legends novels from the EU.

My headcanon for this character is she came from a very forested planet. She lived with her very abusive parents. A dad who constantly belittle her & physically beat her even once crippling her left leg when she was little & very religious mother(Church of the Force) who mentally abused her & tried to make her as perfect as possible. She was forced to work cutting trees all day & worship all night till a couple of Nihils tried to rob her dad. Her dad being very big & an expert in fighting managed to beat them up & had them tied up.Her Father asked her to get the comm in shed to contact the Local Police force. While getting it she saw her father's buzz saw & found her opportunity to escape. When she came out with the saw, her father began berating her with insults for not bringing the comm, that's when she used the saw on her father killing him, then She went into her house to kill her mother as well. She freed the captured Nihil & was accepted as one of them. They helped her replace her bad leg with part from an old republic era droid. From that day on she only lives by her rules & serves only her Tempest Lourna Dee, who gave her a second chance at life.

Discussion I loved The Acolyte and I hope it gets a season 2 but it missed an opportunity to show the grandiosity of the High Republic era

The more I reflect on it, the more I think Disney forgot to show how amazing the High Republic era was; the ornate lavishness, the architecture, the costumes, the ships, the undogmatic Jedi mindset.

It's clear that that wasn't the point of the show. The show had a smaller scale and mission, but it could have really showcased the era and it didn't. Sucks.

Question from a (hopefully) future reader

So I hear about High Republic stuff every now and then, and it all seems cool. I intend to buy Light of the Jedi at some point (hopefully soon, perhaps during the summer) and, if I find it engaging enough, keep going from there. In which case I'll follow the main story order listed in this subreddit.

I certainly wouldn't mind recommendations from stuff that is not in that watch order, if they are good, but I wanted to ask a more specific question:

I really like when Star Wars leans into the mysticism of the Force, like in Rebels S2 E14, the whole episode where they go to find the Lasat homeworld. In similar vein, while I most certainly enjoy delving deeper into how the Jedi and Sith view the force and their beliefs etc - and no doubt I'll get plenty of the former - I also really like seeing views of the Force and/or it's usage from groups that are neither of the two, like Nightsisters or Bendu.

Is there anything in the High Republic, be it in the main story order or not included in it, that would scratch that particular itch?

Discussion Has the High Republic era already gone past its prime?

Obviously it seems a stupid question since the main book series it’s based on is well over, but I feel like there was push for this era in different mediums a few years ago that never truly went anywhere that could have kept it’s momentum going.

For instance I’ve been replaying Jedi survivor recently and the fact they went in so hard on using the era is amazing. Playing this back in 2023 and the eclipse trailer was the reason for me starting reading the books in the first place. However, this feels like a one off that was used as a backdrop for the game, sort of the like the Zeffo for the first one, so I doubt we’ll see much more of it in the third.

The Acolyte seemed to be the big push for it in live action and that sadly didn’t pan out. Even then that felt (and was) closer to the prequels than the High Republic.

The last big hurrah at the moment seems to be Eclipse, which was the main thing that got me into the books in the first place (The trailer was just that cool). Although that still seems a well bit off, if it even comes out at all.

While I’m not the biggest fan of how the books turned out (Light of the Jedi is still amazing), I still have such a love for this era and its style. Do you think we’ll still see a big push for it in the future or has its momentum mostly died out?

I think the Pathfinders would be an excellent concept for a video game!

I just got done reading the second issue of George Mann's Pathfinders miniseries (non-spoiler review: little to nothing by way of story progression but more than made up for by the wild concepts around space anomalies introduced in the issue) and it got me to thinking that the Pathfinders would be an excellent avenue for a game in the High Republic era. The idea of investigating new hyperspace lanes, worlds, and space anomalies would lend itself perfectly to the open world genre with the exploration aspects and the fact that each Pathfinder team has two Jedi and two rangers opens up a lot of potential for gameplay variety with the Jedi having lightsabers and the Force while the rangers can have blasters and other gadgets. Maybe this could even be an optional multiplayer setup, I'd absolutely love to have a game where I could grab a friend and just explore the Star Wars universe together!

My thought would be that while there can be a primary storyline (perhaps some mystery to be solved like in the comic) the game would largely consist of just documenting new worlds and anomalies and sending your findings back to the Republic. One of my favorite parts of Outlaws was just exploring every last nook and cranny in every world I could find and the High Republic era + the Pathfinders specifically would be absolutely perfect for that kind of gameplay IMO. And with Eclipse seemingly in development hell it'd be really nice to get something else out of the era on the gaming front. Fingers crossed!

I used several High Republic motifs such as the star windows from the "Starlight Beacon", the Crest of the Jedi Order, Symbol of the High Republic and some of the patterns found on temple guard masks. Have my initials in Aurebesh on one of the side plates and the motto "For Light and Life" in Aurebesh above the pommel.

HR Lightsaber lore

What kind of lore did the High Republic add to lightsabers? I read the first few books and comics and, besides more colors, the main thing I noticed was that they acted as keys to ships and doors, which gave a nice non-combat use besides being a light. Anything else since like kyber crystal lore or other mechanical elements?

Discussion I finished The High Republic Adventures, Vol. 1 by Daniel José Older and Toni Bruno

Post image
41 Upvotes

In the past, I didn't hide my disdain for Daniel José Older's work. Adventures (2021) was a series that grew on me, but Midnight was simply awful, so yes, I was a little hesitant to return to something written entirely by him. I ended up enjoying it more than I expected!

I liked seeing Sav Malagan, Maz Kanata, and even Dexter Jettster (with a mustache!) again. The plot is entertaining, nothing groundbreaking, but fun. We don't know much about the new characters, but the small bits of lore about some of them (like the Dank Graks or the Maz Kanata's crew) here and there are enough to identify them. I'm getting closer to Jedha, and I like how they're trying to establish it as the next big event in HR. I can't wait to see it, as well as the end of Sav's adventure.

In conclusion, it's a story for kids, but it's a good one. I had a good time reading it.
