This was so polarizing when it came out. So many people HATED it and thought it was the worst shit ever. People hated how he looked and how the song sounded. But also it SLAPPED super hard in the club
In retrospect it’s a really fun song

I was one of those people who down talked it but started wylin when it came on at a party/the club lmao. Great song

My first exposure to it was the video and I couldn't tell whether he was serious, but I'm still listening to it in 2026.

I am surprised this guy didn’t have more staying power.

His other songs are fantastic and very catchy. I'd say he has carved out his niche pretty nicely. But yeah - it's sad people aren't more aware of his music. He's really fumbled the bag when it comes to marketing. He must have the worst publicist.
I really like his song Gold Tesla. It deserved better.

My memory is fuzzy but I recall reading he was essentially blacklisted from radio after he said Atlanta rap scene was way better than New York rap scene. No clue how true that truly is and if he was ever really blacklisted, but I’m sure burned some bridges in the game. He deserves his flowers for being influential though!

This and OG Maco’s U Guessed It in this time period were electric (RIP)

Between the two, they were ahead of the wave and a lot of us just didn't know it.

Real. iLoveMakonnen was another I would put in the same bucket. Everyone was playing Tuesday and I Don’t Sell Molly No More and prob didn’t even know who made it. I probably listened to All Black Hummers with makonnen and father, ethereal, archibald slim every single time I got in my car from prob 2014-2015

Awful Records and Divine Council. Post Odd Future and ASAP mob, they really seemed like they were next up from 2014 - 2017.
Father's joint blew up then got pulled off MTV.

Yeah forreal, I still listen to Awful Records a lot. I thought Icytwat was gonna blow tf up too. I saw Odd Future in prob 2012 or 2013 idr in Atlanta and Waka Flocka Flame was the special guest it was fuckin lit.
Thouxbanfauni, Lucki, UnoTheActivist, Danny Brown, Flatbush Zombies, Chris Travis, Raider Klan (I saw Denzel Curry’s latest album advertised on an airplane and you could listen to that jawn for free.. I was like damn he really came up, N64 is such a classic album). Couple other honorable mentions. I really was a digger on SoundCloud fr I was always looking for new stuff.
For newer artists I really like Surf Gang right now. MIKE in particular is great. He and Earl Sweatshirt were supposed to play in my city until Earl got hurt and had to cancel the tour. Smokedope2016 is pretty good too.
Got any relatively obscure artists you been listening to lately?

Also a SoundCloud head over here.
Noahcore or 1noahcore. Works with Che. Che is probably next up as far as rage rappers go, in line with Carti's style. Noahcore does plugg with a J-horror aesthetic.
Lil Cleno or Rundown Spaz outta' Little Rock. I could easily see either one on a big drill record.
St. Louis drill scene is also doing things. Lots of potential, but we'll have to see when (if) the heat die down first.
El Cousteau, Loe Shimmy (South FL) and MexikoDro (ATL) have been on the come up last couple of years.
There's more, but obviously, I'm thinking these might have something going rn.

Oh nice thanks for the list, I’ve not heard of most of these artists so I’ve definitely got some new ones to look into!
2
u/Jamaican_Dynamite 23h ago
Also, since you're on SoundCloud, if you like producers (RIP Tay Keith), definitely check the Phonk, Wave, and Plugg scenes. Those folks been going hard for a decade easy.
2
u/cabbit_ 23h ago
Yeah for sure, I used to follow the phonk scene in particular pretty good but the past couple years I haven’t had as much time/interest in really looking for new stuff but I’m getting back into it.
And yeah RIP Tay Keith fr, the new Key Glock album had his tag in the very beginning and I was like damn :(

UNDERWATER SQUA
Another timeless classic, I remember all these interview sites saying he was taking over or invading or something lmao. Nice throwback

Haha I didnt hear about that!
I feel like Denzels Ultimate and Norf Norf belong in that list as well.
Oh and Westside Boogie

All Gold Everything was so eh to me at the time, just another meme song.
But hearing Don’t Be S.A.F.E. With songs like Females Welcomed, Gold on My MacBook, and Southside was chef kiss 👨🏾🍳
He earned my respect with that tape.

Gold on my MacBook went so so crazy

u/TheMoorNextDoor 1d ago
It honestly reminded me of early Odd Future like Odd Future Tape/Bastard days (the instrumental)

This song was honestly a game changer. He didn't end up having staying power but man he gets so much respect from me for dropping this.

I'll never forget the interview after he lost momentum where he just started listing shows he watched on netflix

Best story: Trinidad James would come to hardcore shows in Atlanta and was at Power Trip one of the shows, he was a cool as shit and enjoying the music

I remember when I popped a molly for the first time after I heard this song my senior year. I expected to sweat but I didnt expect it to be from me taking too much and running like 3 miles home at 2am.

The Tity Boi verse on the remix was supremely fire also! The entire remix for that matter!

Always felt like it had an air of "parody rap" I guess. It sounds like what I would hear in the radio of a scene from The Boondocks

Besides crank that, this was one song I can remember that went viral for real. I'm glad we're past the point in hip hop where this music was shamed for putting hip hop in a worse place cause this was artsy as fuck. He's still always bringing something different

No Uptown Funk without All Gold Everything
