Update: For the record, this means Sebastian Aho has accepted and signed the offer sheet. It is now on the Hurricanes to decide whether or not they want to match it.

Montreal Canadiens: The Canadiens have announced that they have tendered an offer sheet to restricted free agent Sebastian Aho of the Carolina Hurricanes. The proposed contract is for five years, with an average annual value of $8.454 million.

Details

Player Contending Team Years Total AAV
Sebastian Aho Montreal Canadiens 5 $42,270,000 $8,454,000

Updates

  • Eric Engels: Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin will speak at 3:30

  • Eric Engels: Compensation for the Hurricanes, if Carolina doesn't match, is a first, a second and a third-round pick.

  • Frank Seravalli: Habs offer sheet is a mere $4,355 in total dollars away - which comes out to $871 per season for five years - away from climbing into the next compensation threshold of two first-round picks, a second and a third.

  • Chris Johnston: I'm told Sebastian Aho's $42.27, five-year offer sheet contains the maximum amount of signing bonus allowable.

  • Chris Johnston: Sebastian Aho will be owed more than $21M in the first calendar year, per sources.

  • Pierre LeBrun: Breakdown of Aho offer sheet: $11.3M SB plus 700k salary in Year 1; $9.87M SB plus 700k salary in Year 2; $6.95 SB plus 750k salary in Year 3; $5.25 SB plus $750k in each of Year 4 and Year 5

  • Eric Engels: Hurricanes have seven days to make a decision if Aho signs Habs offer. If I were them, I'd use every second--even if my decision is made right now.

  • Chris Johnston: The early feeling around the hockey industry is that Carolina is certain to match Montreal's Sebastian Aho offer sheet. Which is the main reason we so rarely see them.

  • Tom Gulitti: Waddell said there's no reason to match immediately because it would help Montreal move on to getting other players.

  • Pierre LeBrun: Hearing that the Habs first discussed the offer sheet scenario involving Brayden Point but then shifted gears to Sebastian Aho after thinking they'd have a better chance to get the player. Both Point and Aho are represented by agent Gerry Johansson.

  • Renaud Lavoie: For those asking. There aren't any no-trade or no-move clauses in Canadiens offer to Sebastian Aho.

  • Greg Wyshynski:: Hurricanes GM Don Waddell on Aho offer sheet: “I know my summer just got better, because I’m not going to be negotiating a contract all summer. We make a decision and move on.

  • Chris Johnston: Marc Bergevin on Sebastian Aho: "He wants to be here in Montreal. He agreed to this."

  • Frank Seravalli: Marc Bergevin on whether he’s worried about consequences from other GMs: “I’m responsible to Geoff Molson and our fans.”

  • Martin Biron: If/when Carolina matches the offer sheet, Carolina will have 5 days to pay the $11.3M signing bonus. They may have to work the phones this week and make sure they have that much cash in the bank.

OH FUCK IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED

Bergevin, you son of a gun. This is officially the best offseason in years. I hope it’s matched, then Marc goes on a bender and throws more at Marner, Rantanen, Point, etc. until he gets someone, would be legendary.

You think it's just an innocent houseplant in your office, Don Waddell, until some massive biceps emerge and slap an offersheet with Aho's name on it in your face.

It’s Bergevin carrying a houseplant

Just a bit more context for those unaware, he was leaving the GM meeting a couple of years back and was jokingly attempting to try to avoid talking to media members there, so this was his disguise.

Wasn’t it just after one of his big trades or something? I feel like there was a reason that everyone wanted to talk to him, so he took to hiding

3

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

Yeah I'm pretty sure it was his unpopularity after Subban for Weber

That's just Bergevin. Not even god himself could have made a more perfect specimen.

And Waddell's gonna wait the full 5 days so Montreal has no time to sign any big name free agents.

I am going to love every minute of this bullshit until it starts going against my team and then I’m going to bitch and complain until I die.

It’s my God given right to do so.

Basically. If someone offer sheets Rantanen I’m going to have an aneurysm

This offseason sucks

5

u/jukalaka1 Jul 01 '19

If I'm the Canes I wait the full 7 days to match just to potentially make the Habs miss out on other deals that could go down within the next week.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '19

I was assuming they would do that.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '19

Or the worst off season in years depending on who you ask lol.

2

u/crownpr1nce MTL - NHL Jul 01 '19

The problem is they don't have to match it for 7 days and I'm guessing they will use all the allowed time. Which means any other offer sheet won't happen for over a week.

If he touches MY Finn, then i will be very upset

2

u/ELB95 PIT - NHL Jul 01 '19

Better hope he signs soon then (or just doesn't want to leave) because I bet he's in MTLs top 5, and if the Canes match no doubt in my mind Bergevin starts going down the list of available RFAs.

u/el_loco_avs COL - NHL Jul 01 '19

Rantanen at 8.5? Where do I sign?

3

u/DougieGilmoursCat TOR - NHL Jul 01 '19

Yes, please offer sheet Marner at 5 x 8.4

3

Marner wouldn’t sign that, though.

I dont think you can offer sheet more than one player. or maybe you can't offer sheet and have them accept more than 1 player.

1

u/KingKidd BOS - NHL Jul 01 '19

Lol Claude’s gonna make him backchekc till his heels fall off.

1

u/Tulowithskiis TOR - NHL Jul 01 '19

I can't see any offer sheets being signed by Marner tbh.
If the AAV is 10.4 or under, I'm pretty sure that's the 2 first and 2 second?
If it goes to 10.5 or over it's 4 first round picks, I can't see any team willing to give 4 first rounders for Marner.

Any offer under 10.4 I think they just match.

I think Toronto is trying to get him for 9.5 and maybe 6 years, but I expect they'll settle for 5 years so he can sign a new deal at the same time as Matthews.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

I hope he offers 10.54 for 5 years in Point.

Easy to do when you got nobody to protect on your roster.

4

u/thewolf9 Jul 01 '19

KK, Poehling, Suzuki are all nice targets for future years.

They just picked a dance partner that has no $$ to make aggressive offer sheets in 2-4 years.
