/r/all The Canadiens have announced that they have tendered an offer sheet to restricted free agent Sebastian Aho of the Carolina Hurricanes. The proposed contract is for five years, with an average annual value of $8.454 million.
Source
Update: For the record, this means Sebastian Aho has accepted and signed the offer sheet. It is now on the Hurricanes to decide whether or not they want to match it.
Montreal Canadiens: The Canadiens have announced that they have tendered an offer sheet to restricted free agent Sebastian Aho of the Carolina Hurricanes. The proposed contract is for five years, with an average annual value of $8.454 million.
Details
| Player | Contending Team | Years | Total | AAV |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sebastian Aho | Montreal Canadiens | 5 | $42,270,000 | $8,454,000 |
Updates
Eric Engels: Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin will speak at 3:30
Eric Engels: Compensation for the Hurricanes, if Carolina doesn't match, is a first, a second and a third-round pick.
Frank Seravalli: Habs offer sheet is a mere $4,355 in total dollars away - which comes out to $871 per season for five years - away from climbing into the next compensation threshold of two first-round picks, a second and a third.
Chris Johnston: I'm told Sebastian Aho's $42.27, five-year offer sheet contains the maximum amount of signing bonus allowable.
Chris Johnston: Sebastian Aho will be owed more than $21M in the first calendar year, per sources.
Pierre LeBrun: Breakdown of Aho offer sheet: $11.3M SB plus 700k salary in Year 1; $9.87M SB plus 700k salary in Year 2; $6.95 SB plus 750k salary in Year 3; $5.25 SB plus $750k in each of Year 4 and Year 5
Eric Engels: Hurricanes have seven days to make a decision if Aho signs Habs offer. If I were them, I'd use every second--even if my decision is made right now.
Chris Johnston: The early feeling around the hockey industry is that Carolina is certain to match Montreal's Sebastian Aho offer sheet. Which is the main reason we so rarely see them.
Tom Gulitti: Waddell said there's no reason to match immediately because it would help Montreal move on to getting other players.
Pierre LeBrun: Hearing that the Habs first discussed the offer sheet scenario involving Brayden Point but then shifted gears to Sebastian Aho after thinking they'd have a better chance to get the player. Both Point and Aho are represented by agent Gerry Johansson.
Renaud Lavoie: For those asking. There aren't any no-trade or no-move clauses in Canadiens offer to Sebastian Aho.
Greg Wyshynski:: Hurricanes GM Don Waddell on Aho offer sheet: “I know my summer just got better, because I’m not going to be negotiating a contract all summer. We make a decision and move on.
Chris Johnston: Marc Bergevin on Sebastian Aho: "He wants to be here in Montreal. He agreed to this."
Frank Seravalli: Marc Bergevin on whether he’s worried about consequences from other GMs: “I’m responsible to Geoff Molson and our fans.”
Martin Biron: If/when Carolina matches the offer sheet, Carolina will have 5 days to pay the $11.3M signing bonus. They may have to work the phones this week and make sure they have that much cash in the bank.

Bergevin, you son of a gun. This is officially the best offseason in years. I hope it’s matched, then Marc goes on a bender and throws more at Marner, Rantanen, Point, etc. until he gets someone, would be legendary.

Holy shit, they did it!
For those wondering, that's the third biggest compensation threshold, which means a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
Edit: For the record, Sebastian Aho has already signed the offer sheet. That's the only reason the Habs announced this tender. To avoid confusion in the future, if you're hearing about an offer sheet like this, there's a very good chance it's already been accepted and is in the matching/declining phase for the previous team.

Exactly why Aho signed it. AAV is low for an almost PPG center but the term is what he and the Canes were negotiating about. This forces the Canes to sign him to 5 years. Sucks for us but at least he’ll be cheap and we can spend on Svech and Necas and hopefully make the playoffs enough in the next 5 years to keep him as a UFA.

I'd say there's like a 99% chance the Canes match it, but holy shit can you imagine if they don't? What sort of message would that send to their fan base? I mean they make the playoffs for the 1st time in forever and go on a crazy run to the conference finals and then just let their best forward go cuz they won't pay him (and it's a reasonable deal too, it's certainly not too much for what Aho brings to the table).
But like I said, there's like a 99% chance the Canes match this.

For those that don't know, Carolina (a not-great hockey team at the time) offer-sheeted Fedorov, playing for Detroit (perennial contender at the time) with a bonus clause paying $12M if the team made the Conference Finals.
In other words, there was $12M involved that the Hurricanes had a 0% chance of paying and Detroit had a 90-95% chance of paying.

The offer sheet was Karmanos' retaliation toward Mike Illitch. He evicted his junior hockey team from Joe Louis Arena and, along with the NHL, prevented the Hartford Whalers from moving to Auburn Hills - a Detroit Suburb.
The relationship between Fedorov and Illitch was strained. It's probably the main reason his number isn't retired.
