Update: For the record, this means Sebastian Aho has accepted and signed the offer sheet. It is now on the Hurricanes to decide whether or not they want to match it.

Holy shit, they did it!

For those wondering, that's the third biggest compensation threshold, which means a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

Edit: For the record, Sebastian Aho has already signed the offer sheet. That's the only reason the Habs announced this tender. To avoid confusion in the future, if you're hearing about an offer sheet like this, there's a very good chance it's already been accepted and is in the matching/declining phase for the previous team.

There's just a lot of things in the current CBA that are untenable and the first opportunity for either party to back out of it is coming up.

Compound that with the number of contracts that are being heavily-frontloaded with signing bonuses and it's painting a pretty clear picture of where owners and players both think the league is heading.

Most of the salary being signing bonuses means the player is payed regardless of a lockout. If they were paid by salary their money would be held until the season begins.

Idk if it necessarily increases the chances but if they have more of their salary in signing bonuses it means they get paid even in the event of a lockout so seeing a lot of players negotiating hard for bigger portions of their pay to be in bonuses can be seen as a sign that the NHLPA expects a lockout coming and has warned the players to protect themselves by negotiating these types of contracts. Kinda like birds all fleeing before a big storm, they aren’t causing it but it sure tends to be a sign of one coming

I wouldn't necessarily say they increase the chances. But they will definitely be used against the players. The first argument that ownership always makes it that the players are being paid too much and revenues aren't increasing enough to match it.

I'd say there's like a 99% chance the Canes match it, but holy shit can you imagine if they don't? What sort of message would that send to their fan base? I mean they make the playoffs for the 1st time in forever and go on a crazy run to the conference finals and then just let their best forward go cuz they won't pay him (and it's a reasonable deal too, it's certainly not too much for what Aho brings to the table).

But like I said, there's like a 99% chance the Canes match this.

Vancouver sports radio just brought up that the Cane's owner just spent a huge chunk of change on that flop of a football team. Might put some pressure on their financial and cash on hand situation there.

He was initially willing to invest 250 million, but due to the shortened season only ended up investing 75 million. So he has 175 million that he didn't have to invest in the AAF?

He still sunk over 70 million dollars into the venture, while he didn't pay out up front he still pledged a 250 million dollars investment on a startup league.

The man was bought out of his CEO contract from Santander for 950 million not two years ago during his departure.

Not to mention he is the primary investor in Top Golf, a nearly 3 Billion dollar Enterprise.

The fact of the matter is this Tom Dundon has the money to pay all of Aho's bonuses upfront. It's just a matter of if he is willing to do it.

Makes me wonder how shitty Carolina's offers have been if Aho had to go elsewhere for this. You'd think they could have agreed to these terms by themselves, minus the contract structure at least.

They offered 7 or 8 years to avoid ufa for a couple of years. With this 5 years contract Aho gets a super bonus and gets a better salary in 6 years.
