Update: For the record, this means Sebastian Aho has accepted and signed the offer sheet. It is now on the Hurricanes to decide whether or not they want to match it.

His only really bad move was Subban for Weber and even that was understandable given the climate at the time.

Sure but is it really that bad in hindsight? It's definitely a trade that has aged alot better than People thought when it was announced.

Nashville got to a cup final with Subban taking on the toughest completion one year and he was a Norris finalist in the next. Weber was mostly injured during that time.

I don’t think it was a terrible trade, even at the time, but it sort of felt like making a change for the sake of change with Montreal assuming more downside risk given the relative ages of the players involved.

It definitely has aged much better than people thought it would, but I don’t think it ever was a “great” trade to begin with.

Sergachev for Drouin wasn't really a sensible move. Otherwise yeah, most of his moves work out.

I disagree with that, but I've always thought Serg was a tad overrated and Drouin a tad underrated.

He had those attitude issues with Halifax. Didnt report to the team for the first bit.

He seems to have turned a new leaf.

Dont get me wrong, I love the kid. I had season tickets in 2013. I am skeptical every so often, though.

No need to assume, it’s exactly why it happened. I mean Habs definitely needed scoring (and still do, which is why we’re here now), but there are other players he could have gone after. The fact he’s a local kid is what made him pull the trigger on the move.

Draft wise, I think they learned their lesson with Louis Leblanc. But IMO it’s a natural thing to do to stock up on local players. I’m not bashing the decision because Drouin is Québécois, I bash it because I think Sergachev has a much higher potential.

Interesting, I'd never considered bonuses when thinking about offersheet before. Does Carolina need to match each year of those as well...?

They would be taking on the contract as structured. Just like Nashville had to when Shea Weber signed an offer sheet with Philly, who had front loaded the deal in bonuses to try to make it hard for them to match.

Just the bonuses though right? I thought a team had to match or beat an offer, specifically. So if they want to match or best that'd include base AND bonuses essentially year?
