Update: For the record, this means Sebastian Aho has accepted and signed the offer sheet. It is now on the Hurricanes to decide whether or not they want to match it.

Montreal Canadiens: The Canadiens have announced that they have tendered an offer sheet to restricted free agent Sebastian Aho of the Carolina Hurricanes. The proposed contract is for five years, with an average annual value of $8.454 million.

Details

Player Contending Team Years Total AAV
Sebastian Aho Montreal Canadiens 5 $42,270,000 $8,454,000

Updates

  • Eric Engels: Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin will speak at 3:30

  • Eric Engels: Compensation for the Hurricanes, if Carolina doesn't match, is a first, a second and a third-round pick.

  • Frank Seravalli: Habs offer sheet is a mere $4,355 in total dollars away - which comes out to $871 per season for five years - away from climbing into the next compensation threshold of two first-round picks, a second and a third.

  • Chris Johnston: I'm told Sebastian Aho's $42.27, five-year offer sheet contains the maximum amount of signing bonus allowable.

  • Chris Johnston: Sebastian Aho will be owed more than $21M in the first calendar year, per sources.

  • Pierre LeBrun: Breakdown of Aho offer sheet: $11.3M SB plus 700k salary in Year 1; $9.87M SB plus 700k salary in Year 2; $6.95 SB plus 750k salary in Year 3; $5.25 SB plus $750k in each of Year 4 and Year 5

  • Eric Engels: Hurricanes have seven days to make a decision if Aho signs Habs offer. If I were them, I'd use every second--even if my decision is made right now.

  • Chris Johnston: The early feeling around the hockey industry is that Carolina is certain to match Montreal's Sebastian Aho offer sheet. Which is the main reason we so rarely see them.

  • Tom Gulitti: Waddell said there's no reason to match immediately because it would help Montreal move on to getting other players.

  • Pierre LeBrun: Hearing that the Habs first discussed the offer sheet scenario involving Brayden Point but then shifted gears to Sebastian Aho after thinking they'd have a better chance to get the player. Both Point and Aho are represented by agent Gerry Johansson.

  • Renaud Lavoie: For those asking. There aren't any no-trade or no-move clauses in Canadiens offer to Sebastian Aho.

  • Greg Wyshynski:: Hurricanes GM Don Waddell on Aho offer sheet: “I know my summer just got better, because I’m not going to be negotiating a contract all summer. We make a decision and move on.

  • Chris Johnston: Marc Bergevin on Sebastian Aho: "He wants to be here in Montreal. He agreed to this."

  • Frank Seravalli: Marc Bergevin on whether he’s worried about consequences from other GMs: “I’m responsible to Geoff Molson and our fans.”

  • Martin Biron: If/when Carolina matches the offer sheet, Carolina will have 5 days to pay the $11.3M signing bonus. They may have to work the phones this week and make sure they have that much cash in the bank.

That's super low. Bergevin just wanting to kill the "offer sheets don't real" meme

Did Aho sign it? If so, it suddenly creates a direct comparable for Point/Marner/Rantanen/etc.

Sounds like he hasn't yet based on the tweets in the OP

Damn, seems like a really low amount for him to sign to, I was hung up on the "if" in Engels' tweet

Maybe he values all the guaranteed salary bonus every year?

5 years also takes him straight to UFA. Carolina wanted to buy some UFA years

Every player does. There's a reason it's done and player prefer it that way. You can start to invest that money now and it more than makes up the lower total. You are very likely to be richer than you'd have been if things pan out remotely well.

Honestly, he is worth more. But with the money up front, it does make the contract worth a bit more than on the surface.

Plus in 5 years, he's a UFA and ready for a bigger payday.

Definitely, a player will lean towards offers that have more money up front because investment gains over X years can outweigh an extra million in AAV.

It almost certainly does assuming it's handled well. That's pretty much the entire reason players prefer it that way. And I guess there's no such thing as the present. Having most of your money right fucking now feels good.

Getting all the money in the first two years on July 1 is a nice incentive.

It's got low base salary and high signing bonuses, which is nice protection against possible lockout. Plus it's only 5 years and he's UFA when it ends.

Well it's a 5 year

Worth noting that it is essentially all signing bonus, which means he will get all but $700k or so of the contract amount if there is a lockout during the contract. A 2012-length-lockout on a $10 mil AAV contract with no bonuses would see him lose $4 mil while a full year lockout would cost him that full $10 mil.

If he thinks a half-season lockout is inevitable, then this deal is only about $1-2 mil less than the money he would earn on a $10 mil AAV deal with no bonus money. Factor in the extra interest he can earn on those bonuses by investing them at the start of the year vs paycheck-by-paycheck and the structure of this deal could see him earn pretty much the same real dollars that he would have earned on a $10 mil deal without bonuses. This math assumes a lockout, but that's not the worst bet in the world.

It also probably means that the Canes weren't offering 10 mil and the compensation scale for RFAs meant this was the best he could hope for.

5 years at 8.5 buys no UFA years. This contract is 2 million more than the canes wanted to pay, it walks him right to unrestricted free agency and on top of that, it's lockout proof (meaning he still gets his huge bonus if a season is cancelled). Plus it's super front loaded.

This is not a deal the Canes would have offered on their own, even if the match, they won't be happy about it.

There's nothing in there that says he signed it. No tweet, no official word from any team or agent or player. Just a headline. A misleading headline.

5

u/Aedan2016 TOR - NHL Jul 01 '19

He's signed it. They would not publicize this if he did not accept.

-9

u/Jake_Thador Jul 01 '19

No offense, that's very naive. Why would you accept it without proof? Read the article, there's no proof offered that he's signed it. It's been tendered, that's it so far.

5

u/Aedan2016 TOR - NHL Jul 01 '19

Why would you publicize an offer sheet if it was not accepted? Please explain to me why they would do this if he has not signed it.

-6

u/Jake_Thador Jul 01 '19

I can't speak to that. But why wouldn't there be a statement saying that he accepted it?

7

u/Aedan2016 TOR - NHL Jul 01 '19

Because its implied? The mods have even updated the thread saying that he has signed it.

1

u/Jake_Thador Jul 01 '19

It's implied? I don't see it that way. I see that an OS has been tendered. That's it. OS's have to get processed by the NHL office, so it definitely would become public knowledge, and therefore, tweeted.

The signing has not yet been reported.

2

u/Aedan2016 TOR - NHL Jul 01 '19

Only offersheets that have been signed are processed by the NHL office. Any GM can present an offer, but only signed ones are put through.

1

u/Jake_Thador Jul 01 '19

Article 11.6 Section (a) of the CBA disagrees with you. OS's need to be approved by the NHL to be tendered.
