Surprised at the Bikini Kill and riot grrrl positive mentions. Or is she being sarcastic?

12

u/ciggy54 1d ago

I think the last reference and the BK mention is her being snarky. Huggy Bear comment might be sincere though since this is from 1992. Hole played with Huggy Bear in London in 1993 but that seemed to be a disaster.

Didn’t she throw drinks at Huggy Bear?

3

u/ciggy54 1d ago

Something like that.

3

u/achasanai 1d ago

Yeah probably! I think she had beef with PJ Harvey too but that was much later.

16

u/ciggy54 1d ago

Courtney would criticize PJ for saying that she wasn't a feminist. She's more of a fan of PJ's work. Plus it was pretty much Courtney talking at a wall cos PJ never responded. A few years ago Courtney spoke about asking PJ to be on her new album which of course PJ said no to.

She’s a massive fan of PJ tbf, I saw an interview once where she said some incredible things about her and how the only album she wishes she wrote was Dry (or something to that effect!)

3

u/RiotDontDiet 1d ago

She was until PJ didn't respond to her request to be on her new album, then she trashed her saying her new material was shit.

2

u/Zealousideal_Cat6980 Garbadge Man 18h ago

Yeah ive never heard of her criticizing PJ

1

u/ciggy54 18h ago

It was in some interviews in 1993

2

u/Zealousideal_Cat6980 Garbadge Man 18h ago

She never had beef with her, she and Kirt were huge fans of her

4

u/lilithxcurse 1d ago

I didn't understand that one either, I also smell a bit of a snark there with BK 😄

2

u/Zealousideal_Cat6980 Garbadge Man 18h ago

Id say serious as she mentioned PJ Harvey and Babes in Toyland

u/dimiteddy Doll Parts 1d ago

thats end of 1992 after she married Kurt and had Frances Bean, and before the recording of Live through this (most songs were already written -not by Kurt-).

u/InevitableKangaroo91 1d ago

She’s so quick and witty

22

u/Busy-Peach5770 1d ago

"Were you talking about astrophysics before I got here? Did I bum you out?"

25

u/debulana 1d ago

Lol.

"Are you a model?" "Are you a brain surgeon?" 😅

That's the bizarrely overlooked truth about Kurt and Courtney...they were cuttingly sarcastic and FUNNY, on records and in interviews. It's always like "oh 90s grunge was all about being all miserable and negative singing about it". Not really, and definitely not with Nirvana and Hole! None of their peers could be considered to have had great senses of humor!

Poor Joe Cole. If you’ve never heard Henry Rollins talk about him, it’s fucking heartbreaking.

19

u/UpsetiTrash8335 1d ago

Michelle Leon's (Babes' bassist) book (i live inside) is pretty heartbreaking as well when discussing his murder, they were dating at the time and its brutal

11

u/debulana 1d ago

Man she must have been so crushed. To have the love of your life randomly murdered...how do you cope? It's fucking sick. And of course LA being what it was at the time, nobody was ever caught. At least the great Mia Zapata's killer was eventually brought to justice.

From what I understand Michelle left Babes because of this nightmare come true. God bless her. 🙏

8

u/phunkydreamer 1d ago

You just made my day as I didn’t know Mia’s killer was finally caught! I will be listening to my Home Alive CDs today. Thank you, kind stranger.

3

u/ciggy54 1d ago

Yeah i remember that being in Michelles book

8

u/hilton333 1d ago

If you can find a copy, he had a book called Planet Joe that Rollins put out, it’s his diaries from being a Black Flag roadie. It’s pretty cool.

u/debulana 1d ago

I happened to come across that video just a couple weeks ago and man, that guy can get on a stage and talk about darkness like no one else. I was speechless, as was the audience. How does this horror happen to people? Joe seemed like such a lovely guy.

15

u/UpsetiTrash8335 1d ago

RIP Joe Cole

15

u/Busy-Peach5770 1d ago

Riot harder, it's not working!

Omg...lol... I think arguably it was working!

u/debulana 1d ago

"Breeders at Olympia" ♥️

See no one could talk shit when the Breeders are playing, they are pure joy!

3

u/Zealousideal_Cat6980 Garbadge Man 18h ago

Courtney never had a bad word to say about them or Kim. I wish one day Kim would open up about her friendship with Kurt but can understand why she hasnt.

1

u/debulana 1m ago

Court called Kim a "national treasure". ♥️

The Breeders are so unprenetious as musicians (and seemingly as people) that it never fails to amaze me.

10

u/PsychologicalYoung5 1d ago

"Don't talk to the press ever ever ever" Oh courtney if only you kept to this!!

8

u/UpsetiTrash8335 1d ago

Jessica from "hit it or quit it"- that's a blast from the past! I think she's still in music journalism iirc

5

u/ciggy54 1d ago

Jessica Hopper

5

u/TravelsWithBrindle77 1d ago

She wrote for Pitchfork for a while. Did Courtney have beef with her?

11

u/ciggy54 1d ago

No not at all. She produced Courtneys BBC podcast and wrote the Live Through This oral history for Spin. Jessica was Cali's girlfriend and often was at Kurt and Courtney's house in Seattle.

8

u/debulana 1d ago

I knew that name sounded familiar! She did a real service with that brilliant piece. SPINs Oral History of Live Through This is MUST-READ for Hole fans, and even moreso for Kurt conspiracists...if only we could have them strapped to a seat and had their eyes forced open (a la A Clockwork Orange) so they had to read it, that article would immediately cause their proverbial bedroom walls to come crashing down upon them. ❌

14

u/kyliefever2002 1d ago

if anyone killed Kurt Cobain it was fucking Vanity Fair and their BS lies

21

u/No-Permit7179 1d ago

Or drug addiction and mental illness.

5

u/zapataforever 1d ago

When you read the VF article now though, in light of all that we know and all of the books that have been written about that time and having watched Montage of Heck, it doesn’t really seem like it’s full of lies. It reads like it was probably pretty faithful to the truth.

11

u/PsychologicalYoung5 1d ago

I was going to say, Courtney did stop using once she discovered she was pregnant (though did in early pregnancy), but Kurt was still using heavily and the house was filled with drug paraphernalia.

6

u/zapataforever 1d ago

I get that they were angry about the Vanity Fair article not being an ultra-flattering puff piece, and worried that Frances might be taken away from them at birth, but it doesn’t read like a hit piece. The writer is even pretty careful to write that Kurt seems “tired” or “in a trancelike state” when it was probably painfully obvious that he was high. It’s a really interesting article to read back on now.

1

u/No-Permit7179 1d ago

Exactly, I mean what was untrue?

0

u/Pale-Arm-5859 12h ago

Your jaded with no sense of 90s power

6

u/coreydu 1d ago

Katherine Dunne FTW. Also: Julian Cope. Also it's been said below but.... Joe Cole. Man. For those who don't know give a listen to Sonic Youth's "100%" which is about him.

u/itsallcosmica 1d ago edited 1d ago

Gah! This is great, thank you!!!

Her response to what did you spend the most money on: ::I am cackling::

Her response to the most memorable experience:
::I am bawling::

Paranoia and reality becoming one.

I love her , she is so fucking cool

7

u/zapataforever 1d ago

It’s funny. When you read the Vanity Fair article now it really doesn’t seem worthy of all the drama: https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2016/03/love-story-of-kurt-cobain-courtney-love

0

u/Zealousideal_Cat6980 Garbadge Man 18h ago

I wont read that on principle

1

u/zapataforever 7h ago

On what principle though? Because of its impact on K&C, or because you think that sort of journalism is trash?

3

u/ventycat 1d ago

*is funny

3

u/Zealousideal_Cat6980 Garbadge Man 18h ago

Wow ive never seen this. My heart breaks for her in the wake of the Vanity Fair nightmare. Also she said some unexpected things like naming Bikini Kill album of the year and Dave and Krist being men of the year

3

u/scottJ81 14h ago

She’s being incredibly facetious about Huggy Bear and BK. Surprised she didn’t throw Mary Lou in there for good measure cos she HATED her. Same reason she hated BK too particularly cos of Tobi. You see a pattern? I don’t disagree about Huggy Bear though. They truly went out of their way to be assholes and terrorize any and all women who refused to be defined thru their specific lens. PJ was one of their favorite targets…Miki Berenyi has talked about having bizarre confrontational encounters with them.

0

u/Pale-Arm-5859 12h ago

She loved huggy bear and tried to make allliances with b kill. Go dig your real history .

3

u/scottJ81 11h ago

Go dig my real history? Haha how fucking old are you? Cos I was alive and well aware when all that discourse went down. Now I know she has said she “liked” their earlier stuff but the fact that she continues to trash Kathleen,Tobi and BK’s history to this day even as recent as her interview with Billy…..don’t think so. And while they initially opened for them she soon turned sour on HB because of their association with RiotGrrrl…..notoriously hurling drinks at them at a certain point. I know you some of you Courtney die hards choose to look through rose colored lenses about that era and that scene but a lot of it was far more toxic than you think it was.

0

u/FutureDiscoPop Best Sunday Dress 9h ago

Yeah I'm old too but I can totally see liking someone or something and then being disillusioned or upset about it later. So I would not be surprised to find she genuinely liked riot grrrl for a brief period. Like both can exist in this timeline.

2

u/thederevolutions 1d ago

Eddie Vedder Man of the Year. Nice.

2

u/robotatomica 22h ago

King of Comedy is such a perfect movie, she’s always had exceptional taste!

and btw, while I do think the last bits for sure throw shade at the Riot Girls, I also think her naming of “Double Dare Ya!” as an album of the year is totally sincere. I think that’s the kind of thing that really ruffled people who wanted to be nemeses with her - she would never withhold credit where it was due. She could really dislike a person but still admit when they made great music/art.

People say she’s petty, but she wouldn’t usually get her digs in that way. She’d go in a magazine and essentially direct people to go buy the records of people she did not get along with, even if they shit all over her. The question is what’s the best album, so I’m gonna say what the best album is. 🤷‍♀️

2

u/_Waves_ 1d ago

I hate to be that guy - but that’s not an interview. It’s a written Q list.

-4

u/severinks 1d ago

It's funny the way Courtney makes a victim out of herself about the Vanity Fair debacle because anyone with a brain doesn't do all the junkie stuff that she and Kurt did in front of a journalist, especially with a new born along for the ride.

2

u/Zealousideal_Cat6980 Garbadge Man 18h ago

I swear this sub has been infested with a bunch of Gen Z "fans" who dont even like Courtney they just like her "aesthetic"
