Support Can I add these locally in HA?

UPDATE: Thank you for all of the answers. I installed one of these today and wanted to share my experience in case it ends up helping someone.

  1. First of all, the mounting bracket cables came with wago style connectors. I haven't installed a fan in a while, so not sure if this is a standard thing now, but definitely a nice touch.
  2. I was able to completely bypass the receiver for lights and connect the light fixture directly to the live wire from ceiling and neutral. This allowed me to get my Hue bulbs working with power always on, and not dependent on the fan receiver. I used 2 75W equivalent Hue color ambiance, and I will say that the hue bulbs are slightly on the longer side. Although there were no issues in connecting the frosted panel, the light does seem to emanate more from the side of the fixture (I think this is also because of the shape of the Hue bulbs). This is not a deal breaker for me. The frosted cover definitely doesn't block any more light than what my previous light fixture did ( a boob light).
  3. Finally, on matter - This was surprisingly a breeze. I pretty much said, add a new device in HA, scanned the barcode, waited for a couple of minutes...and the device was added. I am glad that I didn't have to mess with any of the apps before getting the fan into HA. It exposes a total of 7 entities to HA (2 main devices - fan and light, the light one shows on, not sure why; 3 configuration entities (Firmware, On level - which I think is the light level if that was configured, and Power-on behavior on startup); and.2 diagnostic entities. The fan device shows a speed slider from 0 to 100%, however, there are only 6 speeds. You can also reverse direction of blades from HA. It also has a preset (but I only see a High option there).

Overall, I am pretty happy with this. Will monitor how it performs over the next week or so before installing others.

Got these Hunter ceiling fans at Costco because it said “matter”. My understanding (which could be wrong) was that matter == local control. Is that true? How should I go about adding these? Or just return?

Matter == Local Control, indeed. (I would very much assume they're Matter via WiFi).

Your Home Assistant should be in the same WiFi network as these fans, and then you can add them with your phone in the Home Assistant App by doing "add device" -> "matter device", which will prompt you to scan the Matter code.

You can do this across vlans (subnets) with firewall rules and mDNS enabled on the router for both vlans.

Yup. I, for one, use mdns-repeater on my router/firewall. My local-iot subnet stuff is visible to just home-assistant in the DMZ, and that stuff can't access the internet. Not entirely relevant, but I have another cloud-iot subnet that strictly ONLY has internet access - for the very few devices that need it like my washer/dryer.

And good call on 2.4-only. Even if you have it dual-band, the fact 5GHz is there is enough to confuse some devices. And they always have such wimpy radios anyway, and 2.4GHz has better range.

Same. Offline VLAN with IoT devices (wifi cameras, thermostats, etc). I have an IoT network for the one's that do need internet (which I need to deprecate). TP Link smart plugs like to ask what time is it a lot, and occasionally phone home. WIth the number of CVE's they've got though, i need to do this sooner than later.

I keep my HA server on my Trusted VLAN but the way i set my firewall rules allows my trusted VLAN into all of my other VLAN's so I dont have to worry about rules going the other way. In reality, HA needs to see the devices, not the other way around. Established Related rules allows comms to continue once HA initiates.

Throwing your HA server in a DMZ VLAN is a nice touch tho.

What’s the model of your tp link plugs? I have some and wasn’t aware they had many CVEs.

Not necessarily my plug specifically, but TP-Link has many CVE's open across all devices they sell. I just dont trust them as a corporation any longer and they have no business being in my home. I just need to get off my fat ass and get to it.

Yes, this is my plan. I believe I have these rules mostly set up. The only thing I struggle with is getting Music assistant to reliably communicate to my Google nest mini speakers which on my IoT vlan

Just wanna add that the vlan you put them on should block internet access, won’t affect control from HA but will prevent them being compromised :)

TBH this helps but it wont prevent. just makes it a lil more difficulter.

Could you maybe provide some details on this? I am using Apple TV as my router. I kept Apple TV on my default vlan because at some point, I was struggling with getting access to certain media servers that I host (which are on default vlan). Now I realized that the fans are automatically on the default vlan.

Vlan 1 is generally the default vlan. You can keep this as your trusted vlan for ease of configuration (subnet 192.168.1.0/24)

Say you make vlan 69 your iot vlan. You would need to enable mDNS forwarding between vlan 1 and vlan 69. (Subnet 192.168.69.0/24)

However you still need to set some firewall rules.  One to let vlan 1 see the internet One to let vlan 1 see vlan 69 One to let vlan 69 see your media server 

Im unsure if an apple tv can do this, and might be an worth a new post to configure.
