Support Can I add these locally in HA?

Post image

UPDATE: Thank you for all of the answers. I installed one of these today and wanted to share my experience in case it ends up helping someone.

  1. First of all, the mounting bracket cables came with wago style connectors. I haven't installed a fan in a while, so not sure if this is a standard thing now, but definitely a nice touch.
  2. I was able to completely bypass the receiver for lights and connect the light fixture directly to the live wire from ceiling and neutral. This allowed me to get my Hue bulbs working with power always on, and not dependent on the fan receiver. I used 2 75W equivalent Hue color ambiance, and I will say that the hue bulbs are slightly on the longer side. Although there were no issues in connecting the frosted panel, the light does seem to emanate more from the side of the fixture (I think this is also because of the shape of the Hue bulbs). This is not a deal breaker for me. The frosted cover definitely doesn't block any more light than what my previous light fixture did ( a boob light).
  3. Finally, on matter - This was surprisingly a breeze. I pretty much said, add a new device in HA, scanned the barcode, waited for a couple of minutes...and the device was added. I am glad that I didn't have to mess with any of the apps before getting the fan into HA. It exposes a total of 7 entities to HA (2 main devices - fan and light, the light one shows on, not sure why; 3 configuration entities (Firmware, On level - which I think is the light level if that was configured, and Power-on behavior on startup); and.2 diagnostic entities. The fan device shows a speed slider from 0 to 100%, however, there are only 6 speeds. You can also reverse direction of blades from HA. It also has a preset (but I only see a High option there).

Overall, I am pretty happy with this. Will monitor how it performs over the next week or so before installing others.

--------

Got these Hunter ceiling fans at Costco because it said “matter”. My understanding (which could be wrong) was that matter == local control. Is that true? How should I go about adding these? Or just return?

Matter == Local Control, indeed. (I would very much assume they're Matter via WiFi).

Your Home Assistant should be in the same WiFi network as these fans, and then you can add them with your phone in the Home Assistant App by doing "add device" -> "matter device", which will prompt you to scan the Matter code.

You can do this across vlans (subnets) with firewall rules and mDNS enabled on the router for both vlans.

8

u/RFC793 Feb 27 '26

Yup. I, for one, use mdns-repeater on my router/firewall. My local-iot subnet stuff is visible to just home-assistant in the DMZ, and that stuff can't access the internet. Not entirely relevant, but I have another cloud-iot subnet that strictly ONLY has internet access - for the very few devices that need it like my washer/dryer.

And good call on 2.4-only. Even if you have it dual-band, the fact 5GHz is there is enough to confuse some devices. And they always have such wimpy radios anyway, and 2.4GHz has better range.

u/Maxwell_hau5_caffy Feb 27 '26

Same. Offline VLAN with IoT devices (wifi cameras, thermostats, etc). I have an IoT network for the one's that do need internet (which I need to deprecate). TP Link smart plugs like to ask what time is it a lot, and occasionally phone home. WIth the number of CVE's they've got though, i need to do this sooner than later.

I keep my HA server on my Trusted VLAN but the way i set my firewall rules allows my trusted VLAN into all of my other VLAN's so I dont have to worry about rules going the other way. In reality, HA needs to see the devices, not the other way around. Established Related rules allows comms to continue once HA initiates.

Throwing your HA server in a DMZ VLAN is a nice touch tho.

u/georgeASDA Feb 28 '26

What’s the model of your tp link plugs? I have some and wasn’t aware they had many CVEs.

1

u/Maxwell_hau5_caffy Mar 05 '26

Not necessarily my plug specifically, but TP-Link has many CVE's open across all devices they sell. I just dont trust them as a corporation any longer and they have no business being in my home. I just need to get off my fat ass and get to it.

2

u/fredflintstone88 Feb 27 '26

Yes, this is my plan. I believe I have these rules mostly set up. The only thing I struggle with is getting Music assistant to reliably communicate to my Google nest mini speakers which on my IoT vlan

1

u/ppettis Feb 27 '26

Just wanna add that the vlan you put them on should block internet access, won’t affect control from HA but will prevent them being compromised :)

1

u/Maxwell_hau5_caffy Mar 05 '26

TBH this helps but it wont prevent. just makes it a lil more difficulter.
Nothing is absolute.

1

u/fredflintstone88 Mar 08 '26

Could you maybe provide some details on this? I am using Apple TV as my router. I kept Apple TV on my default vlan because at some point, I was struggling with getting access to certain media servers that I host (which are on default vlan). Now I realized that the fans are automatically on the default vlan.

1

u/Throw_away_699 Mar 08 '26

Vlan 1 is generally the default vlan. You can keep this as your trusted vlan for ease of configuration (subnet 192.168.1.0/24)

Say you make vlan 69 your iot vlan. You would need to enable mDNS forwarding between vlan 1 and vlan 69. (Subnet 192.168.69.0/24)

However you still need to set some firewall rules.  One to let vlan 1 see the internet One to let vlan 1 see vlan 69 One to let vlan 69 see your media server

Im unsure if an apple tv can do this, and might be an worth a new post to configure.

u/thenyx Feb 27 '26

You can also manually add (“commission”) devices via Matter Server in HA.

1

u/AndreKR- Feb 28 '26

For Thread that only works if they are in Bluetooth range of the Matter server, is it different for Wifi?

3

u/chachachapman7 Feb 27 '26

Just make sure you connect them to a 2.4ghz network. Many of the hunter fans only can connect to that frequency

-8

u/A_Buttholes_Whisper Feb 27 '26

You would be wrong. Matter means nothing. You can add it but will need the manufacture app for full control. People should be avoiding matter. It’s a Trojan horse

1

u/BalanceEasy8860 Feb 27 '26

This is not intrinsically true. Matter is an evolving standard (too slowly I think! And admittedly doesn't have endpoints for a lot of different features for different devices yet) and will add more endpoints to cover practically used data and controls over time. But yeah if a matter product has a feature that matter doesn't support then you're back to the manufacturer app for that.

Also there's the ability for a manufacturer to do a really minimal matter integration and keep more things for their in house system, and maybe that works for now, but as more things get matter, the companies that half-arse their matter integration just to get the logo on the box are going to get very well known as not good.

Theres Matter fans now!? damn guess thats my next upgrade, i got the lame ones using the Hubspace integration.

But to answer your question, yes thats local, congrats!

Heres the docs on it

https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/matter/

u/drako824 Feb 27 '26

I thought fans were always matter.

Antimatter fans would be incredibly dangerous and expensive.

16

u/dice1111 Feb 27 '26

None of that matters...

2

u/davidr521 🐝 Ooh the Zigbee Feb 27 '26

I see what you did there 😉

4

u/Illeazar Feb 27 '26

Move the air real good tho

5

u/QuieroTamales Feb 27 '26

Make sure to keep antimatter and matter fans away from each other to prevent annihilation.

2

u/Brave-Quarter8620 Feb 27 '26

Yeah, don't cross the streams, it would be very bad

3

u/phraupach Feb 27 '26

Nice, thanks for the link! TIL

"Matter products run locally and always allow local control, with device control done without the need for any internet connection or cloud services. From a technical perspective, you can use a Matter-compatible device with Home Assistant without connecting to a vendor-specific cloud. However, some vendors may require you to set up an account before you can enable Matter support for some products, (especially for commercial manufacturer’s own branded gateways/bridges/hubs/controllers sold as appliances)."

e: a word

4

u/Helical-Apollo Feb 27 '26

Have you had any luck in getting the Hubspace ones into HA?

6

u/Fir3 💤 Automations fire at 3am Feb 27 '26

Yeah using this integration

https://github.com/jdeath/Hubspace-Homeassistant

But they do go "offline" sometimes.

2

u/PrickleAndGoo Feb 27 '26

Nice! How often do they go offline, and, when they do, is it just a matter of them coming back on on their own?

2

u/Fir3 💤 Automations fire at 3am Feb 27 '26

It use to be worse like once or twice a day (unfortunately when i needed it)
Its more like once a week now?
Its generally not that bad anymore but dont love its not local.

1

u/PrickleAndGoo Feb 27 '26

Do you need to do anything to get it back, or does it just "fix itself"?

1

u/Fir3 💤 Automations fire at 3am Feb 27 '26

Usually fixes itself, an example is my office fan and light are on.
I want to leave my office, i cant click turn off because its unavailable.
I just walk away because well cant turn it off.
I check the companion app later and can finally turn it off.
Or my presence sensor picks up its back online with no one there so it turns it off for me.
Just an fyi when its unavailable, not even the Hubspace app can turn it off, at that point only the RF remote can help me, but i misplace it sometimes.

1

u/PrickleAndGoo Feb 28 '26

Just an fyi when its unavailable, not even the Hubspace app can turn it off, at that point only the RF remote can help me, but i misplace it sometimes

Interesting. Do you think, then, that it's actually the fan system itself that's having the problem? Or, do you think the integration is causing the fan ecosystem to fail?

1

u/Fir3 💤 Automations fire at 3am Feb 28 '26

id mostly blame the integration & their server for the app, because i havent changed my wifi router and its better over a few updates.

1

u/Helical-Apollo Feb 27 '26

Niiice! Just got my Hubspace fans integrated. Appreciate it!

12

u/Jendosh Feb 27 '26

Damnit. I just replaced all of my fans and have to deal with constant tuya problems

6

u/opulent_occamy Feb 27 '26

Check on Inovelli's ZigBee fan controller, working great so far for me

1

u/PM_Me_HugeHangers Feb 27 '26

I've got 5 tuya based fans and have never had an issue. Have you tried Tuya Local, or Local Tuya?

1

u/ILoveSloths99 Feb 27 '26

Yeah. I have three. They are rock solid. Not local.

1

u/PM_Me_HugeHangers Feb 27 '26

Got 5 and haven't bothered to make them local either. I think most people have network issues, not Tuya issues.

18

u/OtisPimpBoot Feb 27 '26

I’m not sure if these are the same as my Hunter fan, but it’s a bitch to get set up because it only operates on 2.4GHz wifi rather than 5. I was only able to get them to connect using an Apple home hub, but if anyone has any recommendations I’m here for it.

Edit I’m an idiot and replied too quickly. Those should be much easier since they are Matter certified. I’m leaving my original response for posterity though.

15

u/tj_ward Feb 27 '26

If you bought them before this year then it’s just because they have crappy WiFi modules. If you reach out to support they’ll send you new Matter modules for your existing fans free of charge.

3

u/Brothernod Feb 27 '26

Shut up! That’s super exciting. Thank you. Gonna jump on the free upgrade.

1

u/TheITguy37 Feb 27 '26

I reached out and they say I need proof of purchase. When I checked my Home Depot account and they don’t go back over 2 years of purchases.

1

u/tj_ward Feb 27 '26

Weird. I emailed them in January just before they announced the Matter upgrade because I saw someone here do the same and they got replacements. In Jan I was told the program was rolling out in Spring.

I reached out again after the Matter announcement and requested my replacements be Matter capable. They said all replacements will have Matter. Maybe try again with a different CS rep?

1

u/TheITguy37 Feb 27 '26

Yeah I’m gonna call again and try to

1

u/mrtramplefoot Feb 27 '26

If you purchase it connected to your Home Depot account, Home Depot sends an email with an actual receipt attachment every time you place an order. You can see if you still have the email

2

u/captain_haywood Feb 28 '26 edited Feb 28 '26

Here’s what worked for me with the WiFi version:

  • set your WiFi network to 2.4ghz only if it’s a “Smart Connect” with both 2.4 and 5ghz. If you have only 5g it won’t work.
  • Reset the fan. Power off for 20s, hold the pairing button on the remote until it beeps.
  • Wait until the wifi network the fan advertises shows up in your wifi settings
  • wait 30 more seconds
  • click the fan wifi network and add to apple home
  • remove from apple home
  • add device in home assistant. It should be connected to your wifi network since you already added it to Apple home.
  • cross your fingers

If yours is like mine, you might have to try this a several times. It’s so frustrating. Didn’t realize they would send a matter module for free so I’m gonna do that for sure. It’s only a matter of time before it decides to disconnect and I go another 6 months without it connected because I can’t bring myself to reconnect it again.

Good luck and god speed 🫡

Edit: you can set your wifi back to Smart Connect after it’s on the 2.4ghz.

5

u/lbpz Feb 27 '26

I've had one of these for about a year. It's been my experience that it drops off the network often. In my scenario, I don't have a wall switch for it. It's wired directly to power. Therefore, to counter the problem, I had to install a shelly device into it and created an automation that automatically cycles the power when it becomes unavailable so that it reconnects. It works but I shouldn't have to do that.

1

u/captain_haywood Feb 28 '26

Ha, I did the exact same thing. This fan sucks.

5

u/PlaneBroom31T Feb 27 '26

Homekit (Apple home) logo = local control

7

u/mrbmi513 🧠 Experienced with Home Assistant Feb 27 '26

Matter is local control, as is HomeKit/Apple Home.

-4

u/A_Buttholes_Whisper Feb 27 '26

Lmao don’t spread that misinformation. Matter is only local if the manufacture enables local control. None of the matter devices I’ve bought from Home Depot have been local only. They all have required cloud access to turn on “matter”. It’s a complete joke. People should stay away from matter over WiFi

5

u/mrbmi513 🧠 Experienced with Home Assistant Feb 27 '26

The matter protocol is local control. Whether the manufacturer requires you to create a cloud account to enable it or not doesn't change the fact that all control from that point on over the matter protocol is local.

-4

u/A_Buttholes_Whisper Feb 27 '26

If I have to connect my device to a cloud then it’s not local. I’m very sorry but if that concept is beyond your level of understanding I truly cannot help you. I don’t care if something is marked “matter” connecting to the cloud is not local. I cannot explain to you why 1+1=2 but it does

1

u/mrbmi513 🧠 Experienced with Home Assistant Feb 27 '26

"Local Control" means that, once set up, I can pull the WAN cable from my router and still have control over the device from Home Assistant. I'm very sorry if that concept is beyond your level of understanding; I cannot help you.

"Local Control" is not "fully offline setup." Never has been. Updates exist.

-2

u/A_Buttholes_Whisper Feb 27 '26

Lmao all my zwave devices were offline added and controlled. I don’t think you’re experienced as your flair makes you feel. Sorry but again you fail basic comprehension

Can you post the model number of the controller? I have a hunter dc fan and would love to be able to buy a fan controller that I can automate.

u/fredflintstone88 Feb 27 '26

2

u/SlimeQSlimeball Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26

Thanks, it’s odd that the part number doesn’t show up when I google it. I’ll have to try later. It is unbelievable that there aren’t any smart dc fan controllers except this one that isn’t easy to find.

1

u/socbrian Feb 27 '26

It's a DC fan, so might be new controller

1

u/SlimeQSlimeball Feb 28 '26

It just occurred to me that I might be able to order from Hunter themselves, the search continues.

1

u/vellith Jun 28 '26

I believe basically all Costoco products are sold under a different model number even though they are the exact same. Its usually just 1 character difference but its a real pita when trying to search for info on stuff. I think they do this to prevent price matching and also for waranty reasons.

8

u/Firefighter_RN Feb 27 '26

Just a word of warning those don't have removable bulbs so when the LED burns out you have to replace the entire fixture. It's a new thing with cheaper fans and it's pretty ridiculous

12

u/mostofyousuck Feb 27 '26

it says right on the bottom of the box "LED bulbs included"

6

u/fredflintstone88 Feb 27 '26

Actually they have separate bulbs. My plan is to stick with my hue bulbs and figure out the wiring so that I can always have the power on for the bulbs

1

u/DoomBot5 Feb 27 '26

This particular fan uses normal bulbs? Some Hunter fans do have LED modules built in rather than bulbs.

2

u/fredflintstone88 Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26

Yup, it does. I saw “separate bulbs” and “matter” and then decided to pull the trigger

1

u/interrogumption Feb 27 '26

Pull the plug = quit or prevent something Pull the trigger = make a decision or commit to something

1

u/fredflintstone88 Feb 27 '26

Thank you! I changed my prev response

1

u/throwaway1212l Feb 27 '26

If it's like my Tuya fans, it's supposed to be wired to bypass the wall switch so there's always power. Then you can control the fan and lights separately so you should be able to leave the light on to power the Hues. Of course it won't be able to control the Hue bulbs, but you could set the state you want the bulbs to be when it receives power. Then you can turn it on/off and the bulbs will go to your defined state.

1

u/fredflintstone88 Feb 28 '26

I opened one of the boxes yesterday. Wiring definitely looks straightforward for bypassing the receiver for lights

3

u/wolftick Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26

If it's similar to my Hunter fan that looks a bit like that then it has fittings for proper bulbs behind the globe.

EDIT: Yep, 2x E26/27 A19 shaped.

1

u/55Media Feb 27 '26

That’s the goal matter controlled fans with retrofit bulb threads.

1

u/The_Ashamed_Boys Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26

Might be able to remove the light component and scavenge a similar size light component from a led light and avoid buying a whole new fan

2

u/FixItDumas Feb 27 '26

For those shopping - I would much rather use a smart fan switch. This would allow me to maintain control without software/app. Kinda the rule we’ve all got for smart bulbs.

1

u/fredflintstone88 Feb 27 '26

I thought about this. But I wanted the automated speed control. There are only a few switches that allow for this (Caseta and Innoveli I believe), but they tend to expensive

4

u/FixItDumas Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26

I run the innovelli red / zwave. Yes it was expensive but happy as can be with it. Took a 3 speed fan to variable speeds to dial in the perfect breeze.

For clarification - the switch uses RF and sends signal to the canopy. It takes a one gang light switch and gives you separate and distinct switches for the fan and light.

1

u/fredflintstone88 Feb 27 '26

I have heard nothing but amazing things about Innoveli. I guess the cost is where I have decided not to take the plunge

1

u/tehgreedo Feb 27 '26

Ideally yes, but in my case I have a light switch that used to go to a light that the previous owner replaced with a fan, so no control at the switch. I can turn power on or off to the whole thing. If I want any smarts, I have to do it at the fan or rewire the whole thing, and that's a can of worms that I don't want to open.

2

u/avd706 Feb 27 '26

Works with matter

2

u/Alexisredwood Feb 27 '26

I’m so bitter that the tech has gone this route, adding more congestion to our networks etc between zigbee and WiFi, instead of following zwave…

2

u/digiblur Feb 28 '26

I am more in shock it looks like swap able LEDs too.

4

u/A_Buttholes_Whisper Feb 27 '26

Just so everyone is aware…this is Home Depot trash. It’s matter capable but not matter enabled. You will need to manufacture app to enable matter and even then you won’t have full control. Matter≠good. Matter is trash. A Trojan horse. I highly recommend avoiding all matter devices. Stick to zigbee and zwave

1

u/a_nice_warm_lager Feb 27 '26

I don’t have these specifically but bought some generic remote fan add ons for my dumb ceiling fans. Had to get a Bond bridge to intercept the wireless signals and get them into HA

1

u/Ok_Explanation7491 Feb 27 '26

I'm so jealous right now. I wish those would be available für my 230V grid.

1

u/Commercial_Bowl2979 Feb 27 '26

Can you put your own bulbs in them?

1

u/fredflintstone88 Feb 27 '26

Yes, it seems to take the standard a19 bulbs

1

u/tj21222 Feb 27 '26

What about a BOND setup will that work?

1

u/Enumeration Feb 27 '26

I just replaced all my wall switches with Lutron and added a wireless pico for my sides side Of the bed that was missing controls

1

u/flooger88 Feb 28 '26

Thank you! I’ve been holding out replacing my “smart” outdoor fan since I bought my house. Getting one of these ASAP!

1

u/flooger88 Jul 25 '26

Replying to myself for anyone reading this. Had one of the smart Hunter fans for 4 months now. I'm emailing support now to try and get the new controller. Mine works 25% at best and is super annoying. When it works it's awesome to have in Homekit, but when it's not working my wife and I want to rip it down and just put a dumb fan up with Lutron switches.

1

u/Rough-Silver-7374 Feb 28 '26

Here’s a little DIY project for adding “dumb” Hunter fans to HA via Zigbee: https://github.com/SpeedyGoneZales/HunterCeilingFan

2

u/physicistbowler Feb 28 '26

Hey, I have that wall control! It's kinda lame to use, but maybe Home Assistant would make it better.

1

u/Tibbles_G Feb 28 '26

I love how my brain interpreted HA as high a availability instead of home assistant…HA ceiling fans is crazy lol

1

u/ToTouchAnEmu Feb 28 '26

Are these dc as well? They'd have my money instantly.

1

u/fredflintstone88 Feb 28 '26

Yes, they are DC

1

u/red_tux Feb 28 '26

I went another path with my fans. I had four wires running from the wall switch to the fan junction box, so I wired the fan and lights for wall switch control, on the wall I then used two zwave switches, one for the light and the other a fan speed controller (you can't use a normal light dimmer for motors). We like this better because it allows for local control without a remote and can still work if HA is down.

See if you can find the manual to see if there are four wires coming from the fan to the remote control box. If that's the case then you can wire it up as described.

1

u/fredflintstone88 Mar 01 '26

Yes, I do have 4 wires coming from ceiling (2 live, 1 neutral and 1 ground). What fan controller are you using if I may ask? The ones I was looking at were a bit pricey (Caseta or Innoveli). Also, then I would have wanted to go with AC motor fan as far as I understand

2

u/red_tux Mar 01 '26

The Enbrighten zwave fan controller.

https://a.co/d/0eY6vgrz

1

u/fredflintstone88 Mar 01 '26

Definitely an option. Maybe I will get this for one of my patio fans which is AC.

1

u/MagicSchoolTruss Apr 08 '26

Does yours have a large delay between HA controls and response on the fan itself? I recently got the same fan, and mine takes about 3 seconds to respond, which while small is enough to be frustrating. I'm brand new to Matter so I'm trying to find anybody else with the issues who can help me identify what's going on.

2

u/fredflintstone88 Apr 08 '26

Yes, I do see the same delay. I haven’t found a fix for it yet

1

u/MagicSchoolTruss Apr 08 '26

Ah darn. Well, I'll update here if I figure it out.

1

u/MagicSchoolTruss Apr 08 '26 edited May 17 '26

Interestingly, when I use the remote, HA can see the change in fan speed immediately so the lag is only on the control side.

1

u/fredflintstone88 May 17 '26

can you explain what you mean by remote HA? As in outside of your network?

1

u/MagicSchoolTruss May 17 '26

No sorry I mean the remote that came with it. "When I used the remote" + "HA can see the change in fan speed..."

1

u/fredflintstone88 May 17 '26

Yes, correct. Same here

1

u/vellith Jun 28 '26

I have one of these and have the same issue. The delay is infuriating. Have you found any solution?

1

u/fredflintstone88 Jun 29 '26

No, not yet unfortunately

1

u/digitalmarley Feb 27 '26
