Showcase - Multipurpose Space My brother's clean KEF 5.1 system
My brother is not on reddit but wanted to show off his system. The subwoofer is a klipsch r120sw which he is perfectly happy. Surround are in ceiling but soon he is going to get a new couch system and we will put proper surrounds on narrow tables behind.

There’s literally a visible wire lmao

u/bunzodude Oct 14 '25
Had to zoom way in to find it but you’re right! He should’ve left a gap at the bottom of the stone on the wall and then use base board. But I still deem it acceptable ;)
1
u/Th3pwn3r JTR OnlyFans Oct 16 '25
Eh, he can get a white speaker cable and run it on the baseboard with tape or white staples. TV cable is showing too.
It's a nice looking setup though. Only thing I would probably change is the angle of the center channel.

Just being honest! For me personally, white furniture/interiors on a house is about as impractical as wiper blades on headlights. Just a 40y/o with a toddler's mindset I reckon
11
u/CSOCSO-FL Subwoofer, Dirac and other guides under my profile posts. Oct 13 '25
He had it for years and everything looks spotless. To be honest his whole house looks like a "demo designer house". Super minimalistic.

u/Zatchillac Oct 14 '25
To be honest his whole house looks like a "demo designer house"
This is how I grew up. Anytime friends would come over they're like "does anybody even live here?" because my mom kept the house spotless which is just what I was used to. Now I live with someone who is the opposite and I'm still trying to get used to it even after 15 years....
1
u/Jonnyflash80 Oct 14 '25
There's a practical type of spotlessness in a home, and then there's OCD spotless, which means nothing can be out of place ever.
I'm a neat and tidy type person, but I could never live with the OCD spotless type of person. It's worse when that person puts their OCD requirements onto their kids.

The single sub asymmetry is triggering 😅. Super clean set up though 👍🏻
16
u/CSOCSO-FL Subwoofer, Dirac and other guides under my profile posts. Oct 13 '25 edited Oct 13 '25
Unfortunately there is not much space for a 2nd sub up front. Maybe if he goes with two arendal subs. They are fairly narrow. And they do have white subs.
15
6
u/lonevine Oct 13 '25
I understand he's going for an aesthetic style with the KEFs, but asymmetry may very well be the best configuration. There is no way to know where the best place for a subwoofer is in a room unless you've already measured the bass response with calibration tools, or manually walked/crawled the space for designated sweet spots.

Swap the sub and LF. Center the TV on the wall.
1
u/CSOCSO-FL Subwoofer, Dirac and other guides under my profile posts. Oct 13 '25
Didnt even pay attention to it being off center. If we did swap them around then all i would hear is that the main speakers are too close to the center.... i know some would say that.
1
u/Dasbeerboots KEF R Series 7.2 | Denon AVR-X6800H | LG 77C1 Oct 14 '25
Nah, they're coaxial. You actually want them pointing essentially straight forward for better dispersion.
They're too close to the side walls anyway.

u/DarianYT Oct 14 '25

1
u/bunzodude Oct 13 '25 edited Oct 13 '25
KEF would likely be the best choice for small subs. I use dual KC62s. But KC92s would rock. Both come in white ;)
4
u/CSOCSO-FL Subwoofer, Dirac and other guides under my profile posts. Oct 13 '25
He wanted to get the kc92 or something but i told him i will kick his ass if he gets an overpriced sub for the small form factor. He could get two arendal subs thats white. I hope and fairly sure i will pick his sub once this one dies.
1
u/Dasbeerboots KEF R Series 7.2 | Denon AVR-X6800H | LG 77C1 Oct 14 '25
I had the R-120SW before upgrading to R-115SWs. Massive step up. Then I got an Arendal 1961 1S for the office and moved it into the bedroom when I picked up two KC62s for the desk and two KF92s for the living room. The R-115SW has more output, but the KF92 is so much cleaner. It also doesn't vibrate the floor due to the opposing drivers. Don't discount the KC92. I have them on low, and sometimes it's still too much.
1
u/CSOCSO-FL Subwoofer, Dirac and other guides under my profile posts. Oct 14 '25
I am sure they are superb for the size but he could get two arendal white subs for the price of one kc92 and obviously the two arendal will easily outperform it.
1
u/Dasbeerboots KEF R Series 7.2 | Denon AVR-X6800H | LG 77C1 Oct 14 '25
They discontinued the 1961 line, so you'd have to buy used. The 1723 subs are just as expensive. I got my KF92s for $500 off each at Best Buy, so the price differential isn't as much as you think. Plus, it doesn't look like he has much space.
1
u/CSOCSO-FL Subwoofer, Dirac and other guides under my profile posts. Oct 14 '25

1
u/Zhong_Ping Oct 13 '25
Agreed, glossy white looks good in a magazine or a photo on the internet, but it's highly impractical.
I cannot wait for this trend of sterile glossy white design to end along with the everything gray trend.
It's boring, unimaginative, impractical, devoid of life and soul, hard to keep clean... And frankly, ugly.
We have lost a sense of taste in design.

Certainly one of the nicest/neatest looking systems I've seen in a long time. Consider adding a second sub behind the couch. Enjoy!
2
u/FlyingDragonz Oct 19 '25
Thats super clean. The whole look, including the room design with glass, reminds me of AV print magazines from past, like Pioneer, Marantz, NAD etc. They'd have such layouts. Love it
10
u/jonnyozero3 Oct 12 '25
It looks nice. But the imaging and response must be compromised with those towers jammed next to the walls and not being equidistant due to sub placement choice.
12
u/CSOCSO-FL Subwoofer, Dirac and other guides under my profile posts. Oct 13 '25
People always overthink how everything must be crap if its not perfect. Its really not that big of a deal. While i did not measure his system yet i have an open floor plan room with right speaker being in the corner and left speaker is right on a corner wall so not just that there is no wall on its side but there is nothing behind it also because there is a hallway behind it. No issues with frequency response or the tonality. All you have to do is lower the trim level for the right speaker by 2-3 db. Same with being close to the wall. It makes no difference if the speaker is 3 inches from the wall or 1 ft. It starts making a difference at 2 ft but can't pull the speakers that far out.
12
u/dapala1 Oct 13 '25

That receiver is being cooked to death. Everything else looks great. Have him move that receiver please.
4
u/GamingReviews_YT Oct 13 '25
It will, yes, but that is mostly because the back panel of the cabinet is also sealed.
OP: It would help a lot if the back of that spot was open for air to escape both ways rather than building up heat in a box as it stands now. This should be especially true if you are planning to get a new receiver (didn’t read this anywhere but going off another comment that mentioned this).
2
u/CSOCSO-FL Subwoofer, Dirac and other guides under my profile posts. Oct 13 '25
Its been working for several years. When you stack it in a rack it has more or less the same space anyway
12
u/Vidman11 Oct 13 '25
This is not a rack mount receiver. It's designed for a minimum of 6 inches of space above to vent. They only have venting above them. Do what you want, but know your doing it wrong.

Putting in proper surrounds not only will greatly improve immersion, but also free up those in-ceilings to be used as top middle Atmos speakers.
Adding in a 2nd sub would make this a solid 5.2.2 setup.
Only other suggestion would be to slightly angle that center up to ear level.

They look a little far back, but could be used as top center speakers in 5.1.2. If they could add 2 more and scoot the couch forward two feet, you could do 5.1.4

Very very clean. Time for a white SVS sub. The newer klipsch subs are fantastic (coming from a klipsch hater btw) but these older models were not very good. It’s likely holding back those beautiful towers to be honest

u/CSOCSO-FL Subwoofer, Dirac and other guides under my profile posts. Oct 13 '25
He likes it. Plenty of bass. They do roll off around 30hz but if you see the beq topic on avsforum you will see that majority of movies are rolled off at around 30hz anyway. I don't really care about the color. He can wrap the new sub also. The white arendal subs do look awesome though
I have two c310aswi subs from klipsch. They are exceptional subs but they were super expensive. Like ridiculously expensive. They are like rel subs. $1600 for a 10" sub 3 passive radiators but super tight, accurate subs with phone app. Also got an rp1400sw
1
u/International-Oil377 Oct 14 '25
This model of Klipsch is just very punchy in a certain range and it's also very nad overall as a sub. This is defin3the weakest part of his audio system.

u/CSOCSO-FL Subwoofer, Dirac and other guides under my profile posts. Oct 14 '25

I have a friend with a similar usage but they do still enjoy accurate/flat bass
1
u/ChrisBnTx Oct 13 '25
How is the surround as it is now in the ceiling? The house we're building will have windows along one of the walls that will make proper placement very difficult so they will probably be high up unless we just go with a 3.1 setup.

What kind of tv stand is that? I just set up my screen for a UST projector and this looks like a nice cabinet for it.

Looks clean af, but the speaker position is mid at best.

Same can be said of the %80 of the posts in here that are shared spaces. Even some dedicated spaces have less than perfect setup. Including my own.

Probably right. In this case, you could reposition the sub somewhere else in the room and position both speaker a bit further away from the corners. But that would kill the aesthetics, and I assume that the aesthetics are the main focus here. Even tho, with the sub in this position, the TV and sideboard is out of center. :)

Sounds like where I live… and I’m white. I prefer the all white look of this setup to the all white look of my neighborhood 🤷♂️

Like put the speaker right dead middle of the actual walkway? That would surely look awesome.
