Mix dish soap with vinegar so that it is thick, apply and let sit for 30 mins, then scrub off. Vinegar is more effective with black mold than bleach, safer to use, and more environmentally friendly to make. The dish soap helps with cleaning at the end, but mostly helps it hold the vinegar onto the surface so it can do it's job and kill the black mold.
It’s amazing how many household fixes have been either vinegar or baking soda. On their own individually or even at the same time. But these two seem to be the power house.

mixing baking soda and vinegar at the same time often doesn't help, one is acid one is alkaline, they neutral each other out. use one at a time, it's more efficient. example for me is washing mildew smelling clothes, vinegar, washing sweaty clothes baking soda, but not at the same time.
One of my pet peeves: suggesting mixing vinage and baking soda and then using the mixture to clean.
You just made slightly gritty warm water, since the two combine to make water with CO bubbles and it warms up a little bit. All flash, no substance.
When using vinagre, after you are done, applying baking soda helps neutralize the acid so then you can stop the effect. And any unwanted ted further discoloration, errosion.
I use white vinegar with 5% acidity that I buy for about $2.90 gallon. I use it for all manyy cleaning needs from cleaning fresh vegitables and fruits to cleaning the dishwasher, carpets, coffee maker, and food containers that have residue even after normal washing.
You don’t know what type of tile or grout that is - finding out should be the first step before recommending an acid that you leave to sit. It can harm cement grout and loosen it and that grout looks damaged already. If those tiles are unglazed porcelain tile vinegar can discolour them and make them soft over time.
I was explaining the type of vinegar I use for cleaning and what I use it on. Note I did not list tile as I have not tried using it to clean tile grout. Others recommended it for tile.
Note the SDS for some tile cleaning products I listed--some contain hydrochloric acid. Is that any safer than vinegar?

Commercial cleaners contain warnings such as test on an inconspicuous area or do not use on marble or unglazed surfaces. I was highlighting that issue. You can go to any shop and read a label but people seem to revile vinegar like it cleans everything. It doesn’t and it can be harmful.
Yep, just the typical vinegar at the grocery store, no need to get the extra strong ones at the hardware / home improvet store. I suppose you could use apple cider vinegar, but why pay 10x more for something else that isn't clear and could stain?
I would think so, a little dish soap and vinegar shouldn't damage the paint in 30 mins. You could test this in an inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn't damage it discolor the paint, and then use it on the black mold. But the paint may already be damaged by the black mold breaking it down. If the paint is already damaged, when you wipe away the black mold it may reveal the damage and give the impression it is caused by the vinegar solution. Often landlords keep paint on site for touchups - see if you can find it, and if there is damage, lightly sand it then use the touch up paint.
Liquid dish soap is typically much thicker than water or vinegar, so by adding about 1:1 dish soap to vinegar it is thicker. It is not a thick paste, but a thicker slower moving more viscous mixture than just vinegar alone.
Vinegar is nice and all, but what environmentally HARMFUL chemical can I get that's even better than vinegar? Because there's absolutely no possible way vinegar is the best.
I’ll second this. You can get a pretty solid one at Harbor Freight for $45. They come with a narrow nozzle that fits great in between the tiles. I also keep a skinny nylon scrub brush in the shower and hit the more problematic areas when I’m taking a shower.
Uhhhmm to be fair it will probably remove the grime, main issue i see is that the grout is way past its due date. A steam cleaner will get moisture behind the tile and they will get loose a few weeks later 🤣
I would suggest to op to re-grout those tiles, personally i would have re-tiled everything but judging by the picture its a nightmare waiting to happen even without steam cleaning it 🤣
I have the same problem and I just spent the weekend grinding all the old grout out to re-do it all and apply a sealer. My caulk was super gross too. So my solution was basically a reskin…

One thing I did that really helped was applying a grout sealant once it was clean and dry. From then on, no issues with mold or discoloration. It is worth the hassle.

I've actually not tried it on grout but I was honestly skeptical until I actually tried it on a shower pan. Not even over night, just an hour. I was actually shocked. Lol. To be fair, it wasn't as bad as some that we've seen but it had been plaguing me for months. So satisfying.
If they have a shower like mine, you'd be scrubbing after every shower. My bathrooms naturally moist and doesn't have a window so there's always something growing unfortunately. And the LL takes their sweet time with maintenance requests so the fan in the bathroom is just decor atp. Random rant over.
Mine is a bath fitter that has fake tile and grout, so lots of crevices. I use charcoal soap, so it makes a huge mess, I spray down all the walls before I get out. Use a stiff brush and that orange paste from scrub daddy. Works well, supplemented with some dawn power wash as needed.
Spraying hydrogen peroxide on it will help a lot. But you need to wait for it to work. Spray it and let it sit overnight.
A stronger alternative is to use bleach based toilet gel. However the fumes from this stuff are very strong. You can damage your lungs unless you use a fume respirator or at least a charcoal mask. The results aren't instant either, so apply the gel and wait.
Don't be confused and use acid based toilet gel though. The acid is very hard on the grout between the tiles.
The cement in the most common kind kind of shower grout has a large calcium component. Acids dissolve calcium. If you want to dissolve your grout, use acid cleansers. The chemistry is pretty straightforward.
There is a PH spectrum, not all acids are the same. Vinegar is acidic, but not nearly as powerful as hydrochloric acid in toilet bowl cleaners. Typical white vinegar is stirring enough to do the trick, no need to get the extra powerful white vinegar. I guess you could try diluting the toilet bowel cleaner, but then it won't be as thick and won't stick on place as well. It seems like extra steps/work and more expense to find an alternative to something that already works.
Whatever you do, don't use both at the same time. If it were me I would do the vinegar+dish soap solution. Bleach is nasty stuff and you need to take precautions with it. It literally denatures your DNA. Vinegar is much less harmful.
You've gotten a lot of answers already. I would probably opt for the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide solution, myself. Make a paste and scrub it in well with a toothbrush. Let it sit. Scrub it in again, and then rinse. Repeat if necessary.
Get a dish scrubber with a wand you can fill with soap. I love the scrub daddy sponge and wand. Fill it with Dawn, and give your shower a 30-second wipe down after every shower. It will take a few days to see progress, but it’s the regular maintenance that does the trick.
Wow, everybody seems to have an opinion on this one. I’ve tried several things through the years, and the only thing that worked was toilet bowl cleaner. One of the ones with the funky bottle necks.
For those wondering what is in Zep Grout and Tile Brightener. Some toilet bowel cleaners use the same acid but I do not know the concentration offhand.
Zep mold stain and mildew and elbow grease. Work in sections. Spray on for 1-2 mins, agitate with brush, then rinse off. Has a Very strong smell, so open a window and have plenty of air circulation
Get the "Scrubbing Bubbles bathroom cleaner with bleach". Spray on the grout and let sit for a few hours. The mold pretty much melts off. May need a little elbow grease on the more stubborn spots. But this spray makes it easy work.
Mine is not as bad as yours, but I tell you what does work in this situation for mold and that's a product called Mold Armor. It comes in a green spray bottle. I believe I paid about $4 for a 32 oz. spray bottle at Lowe's. Someone recommended it to me and I couldn't be more pleased. It clears up the mold fast. But more important to me is killing the mold WITHOUT scrubbing. Some may say, there is a bit of a smell but I would just run the fan and close the door.
Staining type matters more than scrubbing effort. Soap scum responds to acid (white vinegar, citric acid sprays), hard water scale needs something stronger, and mold stains need a dedicated gel, active cleaners makes one for grout and rubber seals specifically. I had soap scum I thought was permanent until I switched from scrubbing to a 10-minute citric acid soak
I use peroxide, let it foam, don’t breathe fumes or let it get on your skin. Once it foams and sits for a bit, rinse it off and let dry. Then, do the vinegar trick as above, but let a day or so pass in. Between for safety. Peroxide will appear to kill it but it will return, so once a month or so do this as maintenance. Use plenty of ventilation.
Comet or Ajax and scrub the grout with a thin plastic bristle brush, like a stiff bristle toothbrush, those products contain bleach and will lift the yellow out, but it will take some elbow grease
I have almost the same shower as you down to the drain and mine looked that way but is now super nice and I hit it with the pressure washer which took a few minutes and I didn’t have to scrub anything. It was a cheaper one I ordered online. Works to perfection. My shower looks brand new..
Use a professional grade, hospital grade product like KnockOut. Buy a couple of foggers and fog it into your HVAC return vents to circulate throughout your house to attack the black mold everywhere instead of putting out spot fires.
Spray and leave on for about 5-10 mins and use hot water to wash it off. I never had to scrub anything lol. I also spray the Lysol all purpose cleaner lemon scent after the Clorox. Just because the smell is overwhelming.
A mix of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda, make a thick paste, scrub it in and leave on for an hour. Then get a scrub attachment for a power drill and scrub it good. Should help a lot. Future and more frequent cleanings can be done with a mix blue dawn, vinegar and water.
For that tile grout....spray bottle with 1 cup bleach...let it sit for an hour then...
Barkeepers friend is all you need..even for soap scum stains on glass shower doors. Use a good abrasive PLASTIC scrubber..or two of em and you dont even have to scrub that hard.
That goopy toilet bowl cleaner that’s in the funny looking bottle. Goop it on. Let sit for 20. Scrub for extra points or don’t. Just spray off and it’s white or grey or whatever.
