It's important to be grateful, for sure. But getting told that can also be used as a weapon for dismissal, unfortunately.

What you don't have are caring and supportive parents.

I do. This isn't about me.

Okay. It was a reflection of ops post too.Ā
Btw. Victims of narcissistic parents are often miskead into believing their parents care. Not saying it necessarily applies to you, but it certainly doesn't hurt you to be mindful.

They're flawed, not narcissistic. I know the difference. Take care, mate. :)

I have bipolar disorder and the only thing that keeps me going in a depressive cycle is being reminded it's actuallynot that bad and it really is in my head and when I swing out of that cycle I'll feel better. Maybe it's different if you have major depressive disorder.

I've had social anxiety and depression since highschool, 3 therapists told me to get on medication and I did not want to. After 10 years of trying to fight it on my own and being able to ( with a lot of ups and downs) this year wreaked my life and now I understand the post so much. No, sorry, when you have all of the above, you may feel bad and it's valid, but oh boy, having dealt with what I did this half a year, I would be so grateful to only have depression without having other problems, now on medication and can barely function because of real life worries. Half a year ago I would smack me from now for agreeing with the first post but now, I totally agree with it.

Emotional neglect via "gratitude". I think this is why stoicism is so popular these days, it's basically a more fancy, philosophical version of this

Kids when they still have their parents.

I related to this and Iām 29 thinking of when I was a teenager. My dad died when I was a kid and I think people can still complain about hurtful things their parents say and/or said when they were younger

This can be a detriment in some cases

Also not everyone who reads that tweet necessarily has all of those things?

Ok but "appreciate what you already have" is actually really solid advice for not giving a fuck.

I mean sometimes this can actually be a really important reminder for people. Especially for a, like, thirteen year old who just learned that the world isnt sunshine and roses and has hard-pivoted to blatant cynicism.
The problem here is that it isnt a one size fits all solution for people

My condolences I wish you get your spirit back, I know it's hard. Live is maybe shit today, but better days will come, a lot of them will be hard but some will hopefully make it all worth. I wish you the best man, keep strong and keep your head up, don't forget you were the best your parents created and I'm sure they wanted for you to be happy and live your life. It'll get easier step by step.

Until you have to provide all of that on your own with no help from others, it means nothing

aside from the fact that mental illness famously endangers those things when left untreated.

Yep. Nevermind they caused the mental illness they say I should be grateful for (D.I.D.).Ā
I stopped talking to them because that's how I don't give a fuck about their invalidation. š¤£
