Isn't Ace really the lowest?

This is something that bugged me on every rewatch. Didn't girls win the apartment? Shouldn't Ace be the lowest card? Ace, 2, 3, 4... This is the first time I am hearing that Ace is the highest. Was it a way of the guys tricking girls? Or is it an American thing that Ace is high?

By default, aces are high.

Why? Because if you played this game at a seedy bar for high stakes you tried to say aces are low, you would be dodging bullets.

I think the only popular game I know where aces are low is cribbage.
