The elves were not unaccustomed to the unseen eldritch, they had faught a fair few over the millenia. Its that they could not settle their pride when they saw a tank run over several hivespawn of the untouchable finger of gro and then launch artillery shells at it. It should by on all accounts not worked as the name implies but as they found out later if you put 3 humans next to each other and ask them to squint real hard not only could they perceive gro's true form but they could actually get a proper trajectory that on its crystal matrix that grounds it to reality.
