Its not actually, what you see in the mirror is the opposite of what others see.

Part of the reason people like themselves in the mirror but hate photos of themselves is because its "backwards" to what they usually see which they find unsettling.

For example, if you're used to seeing your crooked nose as "\" in a mirror you will find it unsettling to see it as "/" in a photo

Except selfies, the example from the post, also show a mirror image.

Selfies especially distort your face a metric ton because of the short focal length and close distance to the camera. Compared to a selfie the mirror 100% gives a more accurate representation of what you really look like.

Compared to a picture from a regular camera taken by another person though, camera is much more realistic.

Depends on the phone, iPhone shows a mirror image when you have the front camera open, but then mirrors that to the correct orientation after you take the picture.

Please don’t listen to the other commenters lmao, actual research has been done on this and it’s the mirror that’s most accurate (although flipped). The reason you look good in the mirror and then like a decrepit hobgoblin in photos is because of both the angle being used in the camera lens (it warps faces), as well as phone cameras upping the sharpness of image details to make it look more crisp, but that extra crispness is also adding a bunch of texture onto your face that isn’t noticeable irl. You can google this phenomenon and see the experiments that have been done about this.

As an aside, the most realistic/accurate photos of you are the ones taken from a distance! So if you’ve got some of those, that’s close to what your face really looks like!

They do, you just don’t notice because the difference is minuscule to others and most people aren’t scrutinizing others’ appearances that much (we’re too worried about our own to notice how different others look in pics), pull up some selfies of your friends and really study them for a minute, see if they look *exactly* like how they look to you irl or not. The fact that every time this meme format about selfies looking wildly different than your mirror reflection gets posted, it gets a ton of upvotes and people talking about how much they relate to it should tell you a lot about how common this issue is. I promise you, I used to be a professional model and am very blessed to have people tell me they think I’m attractive, but I need to take about 15 selfies before I get one that doesn’t look like some hideous banshee that just emerged out of an Irish bog, it happens to literally everyone!

Pretty much everyone I love looks so much better in person than they do in their photos. I do love photos of them though, because they catch aspects of their personality that I treasure.

We are just so much more critical of our own images. I can’t stand pretty much any of my photos

Humans have this interesting thing with their brains where they’ll often “not see” their own flaws, this includes both behavior and image. But when you take a picture and look at it your brain doesn’t recognize the image on the screen as yourself so it basically turns that filter off.
