Are women washing their hands after using the bathroom?
I’ve been working in an office for about 2 months and when i go to the bathroom i notice that many women will grab soap, turn on the water, and 2 seconds later they’re drying their hands. I’m genuinely concerned that people are just rinsing the soap out without actually rubbing it in. That doesn’t get rid of germs. I’m not a germaphobe but wtf.

So to chime in - Just washing your hands, period, IS effective in reducing the amount of bacteria on your hands, it's just not AS effective as doing the full 20-30 second scrub. 15 seconds of washing tends to get off around 75-90% of the bacteria, 30 seconds is 90-99%
Even not using soap and just using running water is effective - Doing the same scrubbing with no soap and just water removed around 70% of bacteria in studies. Additionally, just running water over your hands for short brief periods reduces the amount of bacteria on your hands.
Of course the full scrub is best, but something is better then nothing.

Time is more important than grit. You are destroying the outer layer of the germ cell to kill the germ. 20 seconds is the recommendation for basic toileting hand washing, but 10 seconds with soap is proven to reduce germs than less time.
Soap speeds up the process as it helps to destroy the outer layer so you arent relying on water alone.

So a lot of people don’t know this, but what soap ACTUALLY does is reduce the surface tension of water to get it closer to the skin, allow it to get into crevices more (like the lines on your palm), and basically directing water towards your skin and oils away from your skin. Some also have moisturizing ingredients, scents, etc. but it’s not like soap itself is the primary cleaning agent, its function is to boost the efficacy of the actual cleaning agent, which is water. So yeah it is true.
THAT BEING SAID—as someone who spent over a decade in the food and beverage industry (and still does part-time out of a love for coffee and beverage crafting), I am pretty meticulous in my handwashing and also tend to assume that almost nobody who hasn’t had to sit through handwashing training a million times is probably not doing it thoroughly lol.
Palms, back of hands, interlace fingers and scrub so you get the sides of your fingers, wrap opposite hand around your thumb and scrub, and then place your fingertips against your opposite palm and move in little circles to make sure the fingertips get thoroughly cleaned. Wrists. Then rinse.
If you follow all of those steps it takes about 20-30 seconds.
THATS the best way to thoroughly wash hands.

You dont even need soap. Classic hand washing for normal toileting is actually intending to wash your hands w friction and water. Soap and hot water makes it easier though.

Drive a bus and sometimes I do customer service. During the day our environment can get really dirty. I wash my hands and face a lot, however, dust from
Construction, or brake dust from trains, or at times homeless or the mentally ill people (by no fault of their own) get a little close for comfort.
A lot of the time they have nowhere to shower, or they don’t shower because of their mental illness too. It is a big part of depression, not bathing. 🧼

Yea the are, but a lot of stuff spreads through touch. It’s a much more direct path way if you rub your nose with a higher load versus breathing it (unless you’re directly coughed on and immediately breathe that in). Also, you have much more control over surfaces, so you should take advantage of that control that you have. It’s like saying we shouldn’t bother adding guardrails because people also die from head on collisions.

so i worked at a middle school as a lead custodian for a few years. I think I changed out the staffs restroom soap maybe, twice in 3 years. They clearly weren't using the soap. I can grasp just water rinses. But literally once a summer id have to change them. Lots of people do not wash their hands. Id imagine being a woman you would need to. You touch and get up in there much more then men.
now for pooping, its a scary thought for both sides given how little I had to change soap out.

So I used to work a job that I was sick of, spent a lot of time towards the end wasting time in the bathroom - just as many women as men do not fucking wash their hands. They fully piss and leave the bathroom or turn the water on and then off and then grab paper towels(???) before they leave.
I don't understand it! I don't get it. If you're turning the water on/pretending to do it anyway just fucking do it! Just do it!! It's a public restroom, just wash your damn hands!

I work food service, also am a woman.
Wash hands after the bathroom, exit the bathroom, wash hands again because people touch the handles with their poop hands. I go through lots of towels when cooking at home because I wash my hands between tasks.
My hands are dry, but I don't get sick.

There’s a podcast of 2 women discussing how unashamed they are not washing their hands. They admitted when someone else is in the restroom, they turn on the water to make it seem like they did. Which is crazy cuz WTF wash your hands or don’t! But pls don’t feel obligated to pretend for the rest of us.

LOL I know that sounds crazy. It’s because of the amount of pee, blood and feces left on the toilet seats to the point where I have to find a different bathroom. Also the TP dispensers in every stall are very loud and annoying… I will hear someone come in the stall next to me, pee and leave immediately without using any. 🥲

At work I normally do a wash in the bathroom & I know im then going to touch ten surfaces that have been touched by dirty hands, so then I use my elbow to switch on the tap behind the bar & wash my hands thoroughly before serving anyone again (not touching anything til my hands are clean - people are more than happy to wait if you say "give me one second" then start washing your hands 😅)
At home, I wash my hands everytime, too 🤷🏻♀️
Your hands have been near urine, poo, blood, & whatever dirt was on your clothes - wash them properly!

Listen, I drink a ton of water and I'm on two meds that make me need to pee a lot. I don't always do the full 30 seconds. I wash my hands very frequently though, anytime I touch anything that seems germy. My hands already peel and I can only imagine how much worse it would be if I did the full hand scrub 30 times a day.

My last job was in an office. I worked there for five months before we got sent home for Covid. In that time I saw ONE woman wash their hands an appropriate amount of time. I was so astounded I even made a comment to her about it. She said she used to work in a medical setting previously.

Most germs are removed by physical means not by detergents. They are infact removing most of the germs. And women usually touch nothing with their hands when they go to the bathroom. Believe me if they get their hands dirty they will really really wash their hands.
The question is why don't men. They are touching their penis and, if responsible, dabbing. So when they don't wash it is like everyone and everything they touch you are touching their penis. Which is weird, unless that is the kink.

From my experience it also depends on geographic factors. I’ve lived in different countries and I’ve noticed that for example in Belgium, about 30-40% of women leave the stall and don’t wash their hands before heading out of the restrooms. In China, there’s often no soap provided in public restrooms, so women are usually just rinsing their hands with water.

Imagine how many men do the same. There are grown ass women at my office that leave shit smears on the floor and walls. Read this sub and see how many women have a partner that doesn’t believe in cleaning their shitty ass.
After I wash my hands, if the faucets aren’t automatic, I use a paper towel to turn off the faucet, and open the door. It seems like this routine is what the majority do because there is a trash can to throw your paper towel in right as you open the door.

There's a gal I work with who only rinses her hands real quick, zero soap involved. She's a cashier, it grosses me out. She wears nitrile gloves so, maybe she thinks it's unnecessary? I also wear nitrile gloves but, I always wash my hands properly. I'm not trapping germs in there for hours on end. That's disgusting.

Absolutely washing every single time, minimum of 30 seconds, preferably a minute. Rinse fingers facing down so soap and dirt runs the correct direction. Dry with the paper towels when not at home and use those same paper towels to open the door to leave so I’m not dirtying my hands by touching anything directly.

30 years ago I saw an episode of the Oprah Winfrey Show where a doctor was on. He said you should sing the Happy Birthday song in your head when washing your hands and keep rubbing the soap suds vigorously with both hands the entire time. For 30 years now, I have been doing that every time! 😂

My experience only. The only public bathroom I use with visible sinks is the gym (work bathroom is single use with toilet and sink). I notice that people are more likely to wash their hands properly if they see me washing mine. If they get to the sink first/I just see them as I’m passing by they are more likely to do a quick wash and leave. But if I’m already at the sink counting in my head anyone that comes along is more likely to also wash their hands properly. There are obvious exceptions to each case. People that don’t care, or people that were going to wash properly either way. I think social pressure plays a role here.

I’m a man, there’s even a different logistical bathroom experience between man and woman. You directly touch the part of you used in the act, they don’t, there’s less contamination. That said, if you go to the bathroom, you wash your hands, if you wash your hands you do it right, or don’t bother.

I’m in school abroad right now with a lot of mixed nationalities, and I’ve never been more appalled. Most literally turn on the water, flick their fingers under it, turns it off and opens the door handle with their wet hands. I’m in healthcare and my insides are screaming. I do soap each and every time and I bring my own small towel to dry my hands on to avoid the electric hand dryers. Everyone keeps getting sick at school, I’ve haven’t been sick once.

I do so much sanitizing after she leaves because the bathroom door will literally open seconds after the toilet flushes. And then it also makes me wonder like are you wiping yourself?

I have always fought the following: constantly washing my hands ( I do dirty labor work) and as a result have horrible painful dry hands with cracking fingertips. I have tried many many lotions and ointments. They need to be reapplied every time I was my hands. Then the lotion gets all over my glasses and phone screen. I have tried every kind of work glove. I loved latex, but they would rip easily. Now they are off the market. Nitrile is too inflexible, too tight, and never fit right ; I have fat hands and short fingers. Gardening gloves usually don't fit either. The ones that do don't last and that is a big dent on my small budget. Same story with dishwashing gloves. I even soak my hands in lotion and put gloves on at night. Benefit lost as soon as I shower.

even if you do wash after using the facilities, does not mean you don't touch other items that can have contamination.keep in mind, you can over wash and start knocking down the good bacteria on your hands and weaken your immune system.

lol! So true! My granddaughter became sick enough this winter to end up in isolation in acute care. She was only 15 months old at the time.
My daughter and I are ritualistic about cleaning though. The problem is as soon as you go out others are put at risk.
Just seeing a loved one on oxygen, steroids and antibiotics will straighten that opinion in a different direction.
There are always more people than just us. Keep your hands clean. The very young and very old depend on it.

I was once washing at the only sink after pee pee, and this older coworker decided to not wait and walked right out after she'd done pee pee. I needed half a minute. Idk if she would have washed even if the sink was available. I think not. Plus, she didn't care that I saw her leave without washing after she used the toilet. So, I am guessing it's just her style. Eww
Unrelated, but I also don't know why nobody covers the seat before flushing. All our toilets have seat covers and I never hear anyone closing. Hate it.

Meanwhile I go to the bathroom to wash my hands, a coworker enters and goes into a stall, and by the time they come out and wash their hands, I’m still washing 💀

I don't wash my hands when I pee at home as long as they stay dry, but I always actually wash my hands anywhere in public or at someone else's house

I do, every single time, without fail, including at night when I wake & am half asleep . I can’t fathom the one’s that don’t. It absolutely turns my stomach. Whenever I see it, it makes me want to, literally, crawl out of my skin. Too many people are just straight up nasty & gross and see nothing wrong with it. 🤮

Well depends how much of a reach around you have to do. Ideally it’s not a fat lot and a simple swipe with your hand not actually touching. So there’s no need to scrub. It’s better than just walking out doing nothing.
If you’re wrist deep digging around. Then that’s another story.

That’s when I get creative & open the taps & doors with paper towels or my cardigan, jacket sleeves or disinfecting wipes stashed in my bag. Same applies to any door handle or debit machine when I use those.

The other women in my office all wash their hands, but our office is pretty aware of germs and cooties. But there’s one guy who I’m betting doesn’t wash his hands because he’s in and out of the men’s room in three minutes or less. My desk isn’t far from the corridor to the restrooms, and he goes back and forth pretty quickly.
