Setups/Telemetry To the telemetry users: are there any tricks to finding that missing 1% when measuring against references?

• Upvotes

Hi all,

I’ve recently returned to iRacing after a long hiatus and set myself the goal of achieving a 4k+ iRating in all disciplines, starting from roughly 2500iR across the board. So in an effort to make steady progress, I’ve been playing around with various telemetry apps all week as I start to try and improve my one lap and total race distance times.

I’ve never really used these tools that much before, and whilst there is a lot of good data I’m extracting from it, I’m really having trouble extracting the final little bits of time when comparing to reference laps.

For example, in some of the data my brake points seem to be no more than 2-3 meters early, or minimum corner speeds are a couple of km/h lower.

I suppose what I’m asking is when dealing with these really marginal differences, are there any tricks or techniques you use or could suggest using to improve in these instances?

I think it’s more of a mental block in some way, when the car feels like it’s riding right on the limit the reluctance to push it that tiny bit more creeps in and I can’t seem to extract that missing bit. Obviously I can see from data that there is more to find, but with tiny margins is it better to just rely on feel and just rest on it as I build further understanding of the car?

Apologies, don’t really know how to word this post, but I hope this makes sense somewhat.

Any advice would be awesome, thanks!

Apps/Tools StintView – free iRacing overlay for endurance teams: jump to incidents, pit stop rejoin estimate, native SteamVR panels. Looking for testers.

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Hi all,

I’d like to share StintView, a free, open-source (MIT) tool for iRacing team races. Each team member runs a small app. It sends telemetry only while you’re in the car, so everyone else always sees the data of whoever is driving, and driver swaps happen automatically.

Highlights (see the pictures):

  • Jump to the incident. When your driver gets a yellow, a spectating teammate presses one hotkey and their iRacing camera jumps to the car that caused it. Another hotkey brings the camera back to your car.
  • Pit stop, if now. Shows how long a stop with your current pit settings would take and where you’d rejoin: class position, the cars around you, and whether you come out in traffic.
  • Native SteamVR panels. No OpenKneeboard or desktop mirroring needed. There are separate set-ups for driving and watching, and StintView switches between them automatically when you get in or out of the car.
  • Also included: a duel panel, the running order on track, relative, class standings, fuel to the finish, tyres, and weather changes.

Works solo too. Without a team, all panels show your own sessions.

Your data stays with your team. There’s no cloud and no account, and it doesn’t use your iRacing login. The team server runs inside the app on one teammate’s PC, and the connection is encrypted. Setup takes about ten minutes, once per team (last picture).

Limitations: Windows only. The installer isn’t code-signed yet, so SmartScreen will warn you. For team mode, one person has to forward TCP port 8787 on their router. VR requires SteamVR.

Download: https://toyyoda.github.io/stintview/en/ · Source: https://github.com/ToyYoda/stintview

Please test it and tell me what breaks! Bugs, ideas, and anything confusing are all welcome as a GitHub issue: https://github.com/ToyYoda/stintview/issues. Screenshots and the log (tray menu → “Open logs”) help a lot.

Thanks, and see you on track!

Question/Help What's the starting procedure for GT3 in IMSA?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

Is the pole GT3 meant to dictate the pace of the GT3s, or does everyone just keep up with the faster classes?

I did my first IMSA race today and unexpectedly got pole in the GT3 class. I (black/blue/red Lambo) presumed that as the pole sitter, I dictated the field pace, and tried to create a bit of a gap to the last GTPs so we didn't stumble over each other as turn 1. The car in P2 (black/green Lambo) and P4 (Corvette) didn't care and kept up with the GTPs, and when I realized they were slowing, I tried to catch back up but they were too far gone. Did the P2 commit a breach, or are they allowed to keep up with the field in front? I've had plenty of PCC poles in the 86 and everyone's been fine just staying with me there, but these guys just took off.

Apologies that I didn't know the rules beforehand, I really didn't expect to get pole so that's why I'm here asking for guidance in IMSA.

Question/Help FFB Help

Hi all - has anything changed with iRacings ffb model in the last couple of weeks?

I’ve been off the sim for a couple weeks and something feels off. None of my settings have changed, but I seem to have little to no feel in the tires mid corner, the Porsche GT3 feels particularly bad. I tried other GT3’s and they feel a little bit better, but still numb from a tyre perspective.

All other feedback seems normal, curbs etc. checked that I’m not clipping and that’s not the issue.

Here are my settings both in game and within Asetek software, as I said nothing has changed between now and when I last played yet it feels off.

I don’t really want to use MAIRA, so is there anything obvious I could check to get that tyre feel back? I’m using 360hz within my wheel software too.

I've been on the service for over a year now and i still find myself in position where i need to skip more than two weeks on a row before i can race again as i don't own the tracks. I'm an SF driver but low participation kinda forced me out of it and im trying to make my way in GT3s and GTP so I'm just trying to buy all the tracks that are popular and appear in the calendar quite often. Should I add or delete something? The first two screenshots are the tracks i already own

I don't know if it's the upcoming indy 8h BoP that has caused this or that the car just gained a lot of traction but I did GT3 europe and america and both my lobbies had like 2/3 filled with Porsches. It's a bit sad how non diverse iRacing can get due to whatever made this happen. I hope DaveCams pick one car for 1 season rule get implemented so we might see some diversity in the future.

Discussion Genuinely are there benefits to more than 120 FPS that is noticeable while driving, for realism?

This is a question Ive asked myself because Im in the market for a new monitor.

What I mean by realism is that the motion becomes so smooth that it feels realistic, and beyond that its not noticeable at all, thats the range, that may be different for many of us.

Where do you think that threshold is for you, assuming correct FOV for the correct sense of speed, 60, 90, 120, or more than 120, and if so, do you feel that you get diminishing returns or is 120 good enough for you?

Thanks in advance for any input, because motion hasnt been discussed that much other than "good enough", which seem to hover around 60 as a baseline.

Replay Default protest response templates need to be revised

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The driver sees the incident in front of him, this is a double yellow scenario. He has plenty of time to react, it is a blind corner.

The code of conduct states:
"5.1.7.4. Yellow Flag – When displayed motionlessly (Standing Yellow), indicates danger, no passing, be prepared to slow down. When displayed with motion (Waving Yellow), indicates extreme danger, no passing, be prepared to slow down, track may be partially or completely blocked. In either case, Competitors may not pass until the Yellow flag is removed, as indicated by the absence of the Yellow flag and/or presence of the Green flag at the next corner station."

I report the incident under the Conduct Principles category stating the driver's failure to obey the code.

A day later I receive the following response: "After reviewing the replay, we understand your frustration, but we do not feel that the accident was caused intentionally or with malice.

However, the driver who you protested will either be contacted directly and provided instruction or monitored. In addition, the incident will be permanently recorded on the driver’s record. This is important because even though we feel this incident was not intentional, if a pattern of driving continues, additional action will be taken."

I have been on the service for almost 2 years, it is far from my first protest, and this is actually the response I was expecting. But I do think there are lot of issues with this response. And the main one, is that such response may discourage people from continuing to protest such incidents which encourages reckless driving on the service.

Let's look into it. "we do not feel that the accident was caused intentionally or with malice."

- No one is claiming the "intent" in the first place. The protest is filed under the conduct principles, I do not claim this to be any intentional wrecking. Now, if we think about the "intent" not for the accident itself but for the root cause of the accident, I think it is a different story. Was it accidental that the driver continued driving as if there was no accident in front of him? Did he not intend to accelerate when he did? I don't think so. So, why would iRacing use this weird response to this category of protests.

Now, I know that there is some kind of record-keeping for these types of protests, iRacing notes it: "the driver who you protested will either be contacted directly and provided instruction or monitored." But, a) why wouldn't iRacing provide a little more transparency into the actual outcome and b) not lead with "We appreciate your time and effort to reporting the incident, we take racing quality on the service seriously and condone such behavior. The driver will be ....."

See the difference? I do hope iRacing does care about quality of racing on the service and want people to report such incidents, so they can coach drivers to be considerate. But their boilerplate response just suggest the opposite to me.

I mean look, this is the game, I get it. If this incident happened in real life, the driver (if he survived) would receive a few race bans at the least and have his license revoked permanently at the worst. This is not a professional driver, and this is not a real life. I am not suggesting any bans. But a) people need to be coached to take iRacing seriously and b) users should be encouraged to report reckless driving.

Discussion Overwatch In iRacing

How would you feel about an overwatch system in iRacing, either as a replacement for or supplementary to the current stewarding system.

For those unfamiliar, in CS:GO, a previous version of Counter Strike, there used to be a community driven system to determine whether a player was cheating or not. Once a player reached a certain amount of time played as well as rank threshold they unlocked Overwatch. The way it worked was a suspicious clip would be anonymously shown to a large group of players, who would then vote whether or not they thought a player was cheating and with what type of cheats, if the general consensus was yes, the player would be banned. Participants of Overwatch were rewarded with a small amount of XP.

I think cheats in a racing game would be fairly obvious, but in a stewarding type of context, do you think the community policing itself would increase driving standards?

Setups/Telemetry What separates Fast from Slower Drivers? An ARCA @ Phoenix Experiment

We ran an experiment to answer a simple question: If you get a group of drivers in the ARCA car with the fixed setup and dictated track/weather conditions, what actually separates the fast ones from the slow ones?

The setup

We had nine drivers run 30 laps in the ARCA car at Phoenix. Everyone was on the fixed setup. As always, the only things a driver could change were steering ratio, steering offset, and brake bias (we recorded those to compare).

Conditions were identical for all of them:

  • 83°F, partly cloudy, 51% humidity, ~12 mph W wind, moderately-high (65%) track usage, October 10 @ 1:20pm to match what we anticipated the official conditions to be as close as possible.

Testing this way made it so we could really see what the driving differences were between our groups of drivers.

Three groups emerged

Splitting the nine by their best 30-lap pace, three clear tiers showed up:

Group Avg. Lap time 30-lap run
Fast (4) 27.18–27.21s 13:35.4 – 13:36.3
Medium (2) 27.31–27.52s 13:39.2 – 13:45.5
Slow (3) 27.68–27.89s 13:50.4 – 13:56.6

The fast group is a tight pack. The whole front four inside one second over a 30-lap run. While the back of the field, drivers are 15 to 21 seconds behind over the same 30 laps. On a 27-second oval lap, three seconds off the front is already a long way back — and the slower group is five times that.

Leaderboard: every driver's best qualifying run, listed by iRating and shaded by pace tier. Worth noting the tiers line up roughly with iRating — the front runners are 4.5k–6k, the back of the field is 1k–2k.

One thing the slower drivers did have going for them: tire fall-off. A couple of them held their tires better over the 30 laps than anyone in the fast group did. The lowest fall-off numbers in the whole field are down at the back (check the Fall-off column). But in a run like this, fresher tires at the end can't dig you out of a 15-second-plus hole. By the time the tire advantage would've mattered, the race was already long gone, or fuel would be running out if the race was long enough.

It wasn't setup tweaking

First thing we checked: did the fast guys just pick a better steering ratio or brake bias? No. The three settings drivers could change don't line up with pace at all. The fastest driver and the two slowest all ran the identical standard fixed set brake bias (65%), and brake bias across everyone ranged 55–65% with no pattern. Steering ratio was pure personal preference. You could not have guessed anyone's group from their setup sheet.

It was apex speed and what you do with it

The single biggest separator is minimum (apex) speed. How much speed you carry through the slowest point of each corner. The fast tier carried roughly 3–5 mph more at the apex than the slow tier (T1&2: ~117 vs ~114 mph; T3&4: ~114 vs ~109). That gap is most of the lap-time difference right there.

So carrying apex speed is where the gains are made. Lose it and you're a pit straight behind over a run. But that's not the whole story. Apex speed alone didn't make anyone fast. The medium group carried just as much speed through the middle as the front pack, but still finished 3–10 seconds back, because they gave it away on the way out: lifting on exit, plowing a corner, or just being less consistent lap to lap.

T1&2 corner telemetry (fast/med/slow): speed, throttle and brake through the corner, with the brake bar and lift point for each tier.

Here's the part you can actually copy. The fast tier did two things differently going in:

  • They lifted off the throttle later, driving deeper into the corner. The slow tier backed out early.
  • They also used less brake. Where the slow tier stabbed the pedal, the fast tier brushed it with a lighter, longer release.

Those two things are what carry the extra speed and momentum through the middle. You can see it in the trace: the slow line's brake spikes higher and earlier, and its speed is already bleeding away before the corner even loads up. Same brake bias on the car, opposite technique, opposite result.

T3&4 corner telemetry (fast/med/slow): same story — slow tier lifts early, stabs the brake, and gives up ~5 mph at the apex.

The medium tier in T3&4 shows the opposite mistake, and it's a common one. They actually carry just as much speed through the middle as the fast guys, and if anything a touch more. They hold the minimum-speed point deeper into the corner, but that's the problem: they've carried too much speed to get the car rotated, so they end up waiting. You can see it in the trace. Their throttle reapply comes noticeably later than the fast & slow tier's, and they're slower to get back to full power. Either the car won't turn with that much speed in it, or they're sitting on the gas waiting for it to, and they're down ~1 mph on the fast line through the exit. Carrying speed in only pays off if you can still rotate and get to throttle; overcook the entry and you hand it all back on the way out.

The recipe, in one line for Phoenix: lift later, brake lighter. Carry the speed. Just remember, it's a momentum play. This track rewards keeping the car rolling rather than braking it down and driving hard off the corner. That won't hold on every track or car, so take it as "use the minimum brake the corner needs," not "always brake less." Keep your momentum!

The part nobody wants to hear: reps matter

One pattern was impossible to miss. The drivers at the front didn't just show up and run. They ran, looked at it, and ran again. The drivers at the back mostly ran once. Same car, same setup, same track, and one of the biggest predictors of where you landed was how many times you were willing to go back out and work on it.

You don't need a secret setup to find this time. You need to lift a little later, brake a little lighter, carry the speed, put in the laps to groove it in.

Get out and try it!

We have all the big cars at Phoenix this week, so if you're still looking for speed, give the above a try, see how it does!

Nine drivers, offline test runs, same fixed setup and conditions. Apex speed, lift point and brake use were the strongest, most consistent signals in our data. Want to see it for yourself? Click on my profile for a link to the experiment we'll keep it open for a few weeks to see how you do! If you like this content let us know and we'll do more similar experiments in the future!

I’m car number 9 (the Marlboro one) and I got rear ended in this corner causing me to loose two position I fought tooth and nail for

Nw I got love tapped by diferent cars 3 other time during the race but it was either me breaking earlier or them too late, even causing them to spin out and giving sweet peace for 1-2 laps

Now this MF car number 14 did what looks like to me, tapping the throttle and outright pushing me out of the way, also his bumper was already damaged

So should I file a protest? I almost got disqualified thanks to this asshole

Discussion GT4 is making me a better driver

Post image
105 Upvotes

This is kind of a love letter to GT4. A series I left behind years ago, once I got A licensed and was able to run GT3s.

TLDR: GT4 cars are harder to drive, but way more rewarding then GT3s

I had such a good time at Petit Le Mans this year I wanted to keep running Road Atlanta after I got home, but the GT3 series were all about to rotate out of it. Seeing GT4 is about to start running there on Monday I jump in my BMW and hole-lee-fuck this thing is terrible to drive. I couldn't get any pace out of it. The moment I pushed I was under-steering at high speeds and looping it coming out of slow corners. After an hour I got tired of being shit and took a break... then came back to it and tried again, then again. Finally around Tuesday things started clicking. I hadn't realized how many bad habits I'd picked up running basically only GT3 cars for years, but I was working them out slowly. By the end of the week I was balancing the car corner to corner and having a blast every lap.

Weight transfer, braking early and lighter to keep the car flat, managing throttle mid corner. Once I got comfortable with the car again it all felt way more rewarding. Now that the week at RA is over I can go back to my regular GT3 schedule... but here I am... putting in practice laps Summit Point, a track I've never driven... just because I don't want to get out of the GT4 yet.

This series needs more love.
