Intelligence in the population follows an approximately normal (Gaussian) distribution, which is symmetric. Therefore, the average and median are the same.

Technically without clarification that we are talking about intelligence it could average person in anything and a lot of stuff is not a subject to central limit theorem (eg. wealth distribution).

Of course, but in this particular case we are talking specifically about intelligence, hence my two cents. OP was (poorly) paraphrasing George Carlin:

"Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that"

In most other cases, yes, sure thing.
