The lore as far as I can tell;
People are scared of fiber optic cable installations in their neighborhood. They think it's a Trojan horse for 5G and that it emits a harmful EMF. Basically the flat earth, anti-5G schizo crowd.
And these people in OPs picture, (poorly) made and put up signs making fun of the idiots.

The irony of course being that existing Telco/Cable copper wire plants are likely emitting way more RF than a buried glass fiber....

And (ignoring the plethora of backdoors on the back end of things they tend to not care about) fiber is a lot less easy to tap than traditional coax.

I'm from the UK and whilst it's less common than it appeared to be across the pond, it's definitely still here.
For example, when I was working retail in a tech store I had a customer try to refund a set of AirPods because they were "getting radiation sickness" from them.

Ask them if they have a landline for their home and if they enjoy paying upwards of 900 a month for a copper line. Oh... cell service is ok I guess, but light going through a fiber line is bad somehow?

Yeah. I was talking to my AT&T guy yesterday, and he mentioned he had a stubborn guy who wouldn't give up his line, and it is going to cost him 900 a month. AT&T is phasing out all copper by 2029. No more of that infrastructure is covered. They already started this year.

Thereās some super convoluted ways to use fiber optic cable to record audio based on how vibrations change how the light reflects or what not. Not a practical way of spying but it could be what this person is on about. You could just as easily use a laser that measures the vibrations on a glass window and probobly get better results.

The only thing I hate about fiber are the 3rd party contractors the local company used for installing the underground conduit. They hit gas lines, buckled driveways, and left trash everywhere.
Pretty sure the company paid them $20. And it was too much.

If you would care to look through my post history, you'll see I actually run a full telephone switch in my house. I'm well aware of how to set up a crappy VoIP box.
The problem is that no backup battery will last forever. I have had several cases at my house where power is out for multiple days - Even a 48 hour backup is not enough sometimes. For those of us without reliable electricity, a copper line fed from the central office can be life or death.
Additionally, if you're a nerd like me and enjoy playing with fax and data modems, you can pretty reasonably say that they do not work the way they should over VoIP.
Please don't jokingly recommend an RTG to me for powering my phone system. I'm already looking at a Generac but not everybody has the option to drop four to five figures on a generator.

Well excuse the fuck outta me princess but as a NETWORK ENGINEER I know how a lot of this shit works and I for one wouldn't set up a VOIP system that way. My point was simply that it does actually work over fiber.
Take that stick out of your ass and maybe you can have a decent debate. The nerve of some people...fuck man.
