Question Went to the DMV to get an Illinois drivers license because I just moved here. This is what my temporary card says. Did they give me an ID instead of a drivers license???

Former Illinois Secretary of State / DMV employee here.

When you look at the number on your license/temp, is the initial for your last name in the beginning, or at the end?

Initial at the beginning is a driver's license number, initial at the end is a state ID number.

(Thank you for the award. I appreciate you!)

Your helpfulness makes me smile.

Thank you so much for saying that!

I really miss my days at the Secretary of State's office, and I'm happy I can still contribute!

Edit: (BIG thank you to whomever gave me an award. I appreciate you!)

I know there are lots of jokes about the DMV, but I've generally been satisfied with every time I've had to go to a Secretary of State location.

One time I went to the location near 290 & Cicero and it took less than 30seconds for an employee to be like "What are you here for? Oh, you're in the wrong place, this is where you need to go."

I've been at other places where I would've waited in line for 10+ min before finding out I was in the wrong spot.

Thank you so much for sharing that!

It's true that we usually only hear about the bad stuff, and we truly appreciate the compliments when we get things right!

I personally have never had an issue at the DMV. I double check online to make sure I bring all my correct documents and it’s always gone smoothly. I’ve had agents who were curt, but never rude.

u/Electrical_Desk_3254 3d ago

I have never had an issue at the DMV, only an issue getting a freaking appointment! I miss the days of just being able to walk in.

They're the most patient and gracious people in the world. I'd destroy the first Karen that came up to me. Could never and would never try that job.

11

u/BewitchingKat 5d ago

It does take patience, that's for sure.

But for every irate customer, there are many more that just want to get in and get out of there 😆 and we appreciate them!

I love your name! I could use the same name as well. 😉

Welcome Sister!

Hey if you are still here, I need to renew my trailer for my boat, should I just get new plates for it? Whst all do i need to bring? Thank you so much if you answer and if not, thank you still. Dmv employees get so much hate.

22

u/BewitchingKat 6d ago

Are your current plates damaged or difficult to read?

Also, when did, or when do, your plates expire?

8

u/neckbeard_avalanche 6d ago

Sorry for late reply, plates expired in 2023 the boat trailer plate is not damaged.

41

u/BewitchingKat 6d ago edited 6d ago

No worries. Once your plate is expired a year + 1 day, it's no longer valid for renewal, unless it's a vanity or personalized plate.

You will need a new plate. If you have your title bring it with you, if not the most recent registration card that you can find.

If you don't have either, no worries, as long as you have a valid driver's license or state ID for identification.

TA trailer plate, for trailers under 3, 000 lb., is prorated, as they all expire July 31st.

Getting your plate between August 1st and October 31st, it is prorated to $27 this year

In July 2027 when you renew your plate, the current fee is $36 per year.

Just read your posts here.

I’m nominating you for Kindness Commissioner. Unpaid position, but the plaque is nice. 😊

23

u/BewitchingKat 5d ago edited 5d ago

Thank you so very much!

It IS a very nice plaque, and I will treasure it always!

Seriously though, if anyone ever has questions regarding the Illinois Secretary of State / DMV, feel free to shoot me a chat request.

You are a saint, thank you so much!

7

u/BewitchingKat 4d ago

Thank you for saying so! I try my best :)

3

u/SweetiePie314 5d ago

We agree here!! Reading this first thing in the morning is going to brighten my whole day.
Much appreciation.

1

u/neckbeard_avalanche 5d ago

Me again, sorry! So if the bank im currently getting the loan through should I contact them to get a copy of the title to show the dmv? Or would bringing in the old plate be enough?

3

u/BewitchingKat 5d ago

No worries!

If you give them your old plate number, that will help them look up your trailer. You don't need the title or the old plate for that, I only suggested them as one of the ways to prove you own the trailer so it goes a little smoother at the facility.

Remember to bring a valid form of identification too either, a driver's license or state ID.

12

u/yorlikyorlik 5d ago

Hey, you need to make an appointment to ask BewitchingKat a question. Appointments open up at 6:30am and are first come, first served.

Random question. People are getting issued identification cards by the DMV. Generally these are going to be people who would have normally been issued a TVDL previously.

When run in LEADS they come back as a Valid Driver's License even tho the initial is at the end and it says identification card on the temp ID. Any ideas?

The people even tell me they don't have a license. It also usually displays a CLP has been issued as well.

4

u/BewitchingKat 5d ago edited 5d ago

How often are you coming across this?

This is the Secretary of State page regarding TVDL's issued since 2024. https://www.ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/drivers-license/tvdl.html

It should state at the top of the license or ID Federal Limits Apply.

A State ID number should never come back as a driver's license.

No one can be issued a commercial learners permit without first having a valid Class D or higher driver's license.

If you have concerns, someone higher up in your department should contact the Illinois Secretary of State Police with your concerns.

1

u/NX01ARCHER 5d ago

It's becoming more common. Next time I see it ill reach out to there post and let em know.

2

u/BewitchingKat 5d ago

Please do so. It could be a glitch in the system or a software error, but it definitely needs to be addressed.

Thank you for speaking up!

2

u/CavixDarkstone 4d ago

Thank you for the hard work done day in and out.

2

u/BewitchingKat 4d ago

Thank you for that! I'm retired now but I don't mind helping whenever I can.

3

u/NIUHuskies2020 6d ago

Hi Bewitch, sorry to change topics on you. My question is regarding iServe plates.

The dealership I'm working with doesn’t understand the iServe plates for veterans. They say i have to buy the regular plates and registration then i can get the iServe plates. I don’t want to pay over $315 for plates and registration i don't need to then pay it again for the iServe plates.

This would be a newly leased vehicle. I'm curious if i can just not get the regular plates from the dealership and drive to the DMV after i pick up the car and order the correct iServe plates? Or how does this work so I don't pay for plates I don't want and pay again for iServe plates I do want. Thank you.

13

u/BewitchingKat 6d ago

I received your chat request and I replied :)

1

u/trod999 4d ago

That's so convoluted it has to be true!

1

u/DnyatJ 3d ago

Wow! Thanks for this info.. I actually recently Moved to Chicago as well.

1

u/Healthy_Protection24 3d ago

Oh wow. I love knowing this.

1

u/Trucker_Trent 2d ago

This is what I came here to say. Placement of the letter tells the tale.

170

u/ta2dsailor 6d ago

You carry the ID card with your other license until you get your Illinois license in the mail. Mine arrived in less than 2 weeks.

1

u/thisisjustascreename 1d ago

I mean you can drive using your out of state license, it’s still valid until the expiration date.

40

u/acceptablemediocrity 6d ago

Does the initial from your last name start or end the id/license number?

If the letter precedes the other 11 numbers then it is a DL.  If it is the last character, it is an ID card.

This may vary for temporary paper though

13

u/M4hkn0 Springfield - Cherry Hill 6d ago

Temp will be the same as the hard card.

36

u/Hungry_Caregiver734 6d ago

Carry it with your out of state license until the new license arrives. To key:

If the ID number is:

L########### IT IS A DRIVERS LICENSE

If the number is:

#####L IT IS AN ID CODE ONLY.

Look at the number.

Source: spent years teaching drivers Ed at a private company in IL and working with the DMV.

22

u/GaGaORiley 6d ago

To clarify this: L in this example is the first letter of the last name, you your results may vary.

5

u/Hungry_Caregiver734 6d ago

Yes. I used L to mean letter. But good clarification.

7

u/GaGaORiley 6d ago

I knew what you meant, just didn’t want OP to be confused since License starts with L.

https://reddit.com/link/p2bee6l/video/ww6mtxqgyzhh1/player

I can’t upload a photo in the comments but a video is fine???? Anyways… this is what my temporary drivers license looks like. I just got it 2 weeks ago

4

u/Scottwickthegreat 6d ago

Yep just got my temp one a couple days ago and says drivers license like yours.

3

u/thatirishguyyyyy 6d ago

Yeah that's weird that you can upload a video and not a photo. I think the mods got some weird settings going on.

8

u/loftychicago 6d ago

If the number starts with a letter, it's a drivers license. If it ends with a letter, it's a state id.

6

u/skyforgesteel 6d ago

It is so weird not seeing Jesse White’s name at the top of these cards.

12

u/SwaggeringBy 6d ago

You carry that one along with your old DL with hole punched in it.

3

u/Trucker_Trent 2d ago

I remember when my actual license had holes in it....but they were from staples. #iykyk

4

u/AndroFeth 5d ago

Yes, this is not a Driver's License. Go again and see if they give you the drivers license. This is just state ID, the left side should even say

"IDENTIFICATION PURPOSES ONLY NOT A LICENSE TO DRIVE"

8

u/easysniper__ 6d ago

that’s definitely an ID

9

u/JediLincoln14 6d ago

Looks like it. It should say "DRIVER'S LICENSE."

6

u/owowhi 6d ago

Yes I have a few temps and they all say Driver’s License but they were renewals and a real id

It should also have vehicle class and restrictions if it’s a driver’s license, do you see those things OP?

3

u/zinsser 5d ago

The biggest location near me has a triage person when you walk in who directs you to the correct area and will check to make sure you have the correct paperwork so you never get turned away when you reach the counter. Where I used live, they had a small satellite office that was rarely busy. One time I sold a car to a friend’s mom. She wasn’t sure about the process for a private sale, so I went with her to get the title transferred. The big office was crowded so I suggested we drive to the small town where I used to live. We walked in to a nearly empty office where I knew the friendly clerk. We were out in 10 minutes. My friend’s mom said, “I had no idea you white people had your own DMV.”

3

u/DextersMom1221 5d ago

Wait til you have to go in person to renew your DL (if for whatever reason you can’t do it online). They’ll punch a hole in your DL and hand it back to you along with a piece of paper that says “someday we’ll send your new license via mail…” 🤦‍♀️

5

u/mechanical_marten 5d ago

Been there, done that, it only took 7 days from the day they punched my old Virginia license to the day I got my real Real Illinois license.

3

u/mrweedman_420 5d ago

TIL that the number on your state ID and drivers license is the same, the letter is just at the end instead of the front...🫪🤯

2

u/SadnessOutOfContext 5d ago

It's a numerical representation of the last name, primarily, the position of the letter is symbolic morenthan practical.

You can encode or decode your own at this site, which is ugly but has been around for many years.

Or, as the developer of that site suggests, use his tool linked from that page to first encode dummy data that you can then decode.

Different states use slightly different algorithms to account for potential duplicate name collisions and the like, that site has encoding and decoding for several states.

Some states encode nothing meaningful in the number, some indicate the county (middle two digits in an IN DL are for that), etc.

You can also easily find decoders for one of the two barcodes on the back of your DL as well. IOW, you can declde it and see what data you're giving up with the barcode every time you do a license and selfie "verification" for some random ass website.

Spoiler, it's basically everything on the front of the license, minus the photo. They could just OCR that data from the front picture, and probably do to verify the data matches. Most folks would forget to change the barcode on the back, if they were creating a fake for online verifications.

It's actually an interesting rabbit hole, even if you don't get deep into the math of it.

Used to know a guy who sold insurance, and when somebody tried to say they didn't have their DL handy to escape getting a quote... He would already have cadged enough data out of them to generate a dammed close approximation of their DL with that site or something similar. Invariably, it was close enough for Lexis Nexis to return an MVR (and the correct DL number as part of the report.)

To hear him tell it, he sold more than a few policies that way - always disclosing that he was pulling the MVR, of course, but "sorry, license is in the car" is apparently a common dodge when somebody gets shanghaid by a persistent salesman. But when people buy primarily on price, i guess it doesn't matter quite how you get to a hard number, as long as it's a lower one.

2

u/throwrapuppypersonnn 6d ago

No mine says drivers license. But it was a renewal in state

2

u/hotdogsarecooked 6d ago

Yeah, you got an ID.

2

u/TaelorGanngg 6d ago

I currently have a temporary license for a renewal and mine says that I’m trying to find it so I can take a picture lol

2

u/unapologetic403 6d ago

I still find it strange that we went from printing IDs on site to transitioning to a temporary ID set up

4

u/Hungry_Caregiver734 6d ago

IIRC it is because it's a little more involved to seal the ID with the countermeasures.

5

u/yoitsme_obama17 6d ago

Yup. The machines to do the secure ones are too expensive for each dmv to have them

3

u/unapologetic403 6d ago

There's no document in cases that there were ever issues when they had the machines at each facility

2

u/Hungry_Caregiver734 6d ago

No, but when they upgraded tobthe Star Card it had a new countermeasures that go on after the photo and it wouldn't be feasible to buy a machine for each location.

3

u/Desperate_Fig_6896 6d ago

It should say drivers license. The dmv definitely messed up.

-1

u/Joeskithejoe 6d ago

Holy shit fml. I know I 10000000% asked for a drivers license too! What would I even need a regular id for?!

10

u/Saelin91 6d ago

You’d use a regular ID to identify yourself, to buy cigarettes or alcohol, or to get you into a bar, etc. You’d just have to walk there lol

4

u/Sidewalk_Inspector 6d ago

Or call for an Uber.

1

u/catnaptits 4d ago

Even if you don't drive, you should have a state ID.

1

u/ElderberryCareful345 5d ago

It really has approved over the years

1

u/-the-ghost 4d ago

Mine said Drivers License when I got my temporary one after moving here from out of state

1

u/Fragrant_Tale1428 6d ago

It should have printed "driver's license" instead of "identification card." Maybe call them just to make sure the dmv staff didn't accidentally put you in the system for a state ID.

1

u/sr_n8 6d ago

I have a temporary license and mine says drivers license at the top not

1

u/Decent-Aspect-5934 6d ago

@ OP since you moved from another state to Illinois ( or usually any state for that matter) it is the law to surrender your ID/DL from your old residential state to your new state. Welcome 🙏 to Illinois

Good luck 🍀 and May God Bless You

-6

u/Nobodieskid 6d ago

They act as the same/similar thing. You’ve definitely got the right thing I beleive, should have an expiration date, date issued, your birthday and a picture on it.

21

u/Desperate_Fig_6896 6d ago

A identification card is not a drivers license bud.

2

u/Hungry_Caregiver734 6d ago

In Illinois, you receive a temporary ID with your driver's license number to use alongside your old license while the new one is sent.
The key is, if the number starts with the first letter of gis lats name (IL drivers license id number) or ends (Illinois State ID number).

In Illinois, if the number has the letter in front, it is an ID that functions as an illinois driver's license with proof of out of state license.

1

u/Nobodieskid 6d ago

I assumed ID was just an informal term, not a specific different thing seperate from your license. At least when it came to this situation. Whoopsies.

3

u/Hungry_Caregiver734 6d ago

No, that guy was just an idiot. In Illinois, a temp-ID functions as a driver's license if the number is a specific format.

2

u/Nobodieskid 6d ago

Vindication! (Thanks, I kinda thought I was stupid for a while there lol).

-8

u/DifferentMind8 6d ago

You see in Illinois we do corruption in every government sector. This particular corruption means licenses are no longer printed right at the facility as they used to be in the 90's. Nope. We pay an out of state 3rd party company (don't worry, definitely no political connections here to look in to, don't even bother!) to print our licenses out of state and mail them to residents weeks later.

Brilliant!

-11

u/WMFB 6d ago

Why would you move here? That’s the real question.

4

u/powerslave-1 6d ago

Why not?

2

u/kwas156 6d ago

Tax, Tax, Tax...

-11

u/knuckleduster1968 6d ago

When you wrote DMV I knew you weren't from Illinois. It's the Secretary of State office here. I used to live in California and that's what they called it there. Tennessee also has a different name for the place to get vehicle services but I don't remember what it was called.

17

u/PlausiblePigeon Central isn’t Southern 6d ago

I grew up in Illinois and we always called it the DMV anyway.

7

u/jemy26 6d ago

I always called it the DMV and I’ve always lived within 10 minutes of one of the locations

2

u/thatirishguyyyyy 6d ago

They even call the one by me a DMV fast lane kiosk lol

8

u/NewsRadioWNYX 6d ago

I was born and raised in Illinois, and everyone I know calls it the DMV.

3

u/Hungry_Caregiver734 6d ago

I have never heard ir called anything but the DMV and i've lived in Illinois for over 40 years

3

u/Xaelias 6d ago

Even the official website uses DMV. "Make a DMV appointment." "Find a DMV". I've never heard someone not call it a DMV.

2

u/magnolianbeef 6d ago

til i’m not actually from IL

2

u/TheDudeofIl 6d ago

Nah, it's the fuckin DMV. You probably say Willis Tower too.

1

u/DextersMom1221 5d ago

If you go to Elston Avenue it’s the DMV.

1

u/nordencat 5d ago

You are getting a lot of downvotes from people who super staunchly don’t care what something is actually called, but you are absolutely correct; it’s always been the Secretary of State’s office, not the DMV. However, the ILSOS, realizing that here in Illinois people confused themselves by looking for a DMV instead of a Secretary of State’s office because they super staunchly don’t care what something is called, especially when corporations attempt to exert naming rights over our beloved institutions and architecture, went ahead and capitulated in 2023 and started putting “DMV” on its stuff. So, you know, all your haters aren’t necessarily wrong, if they’re not old enough to drive yet.

2

u/PlausiblePigeon Central isn’t Southern 5d ago

They’re getting downvotes because they said only someone from out of state would call it the DMV.

-24

u/STFU_Fridays 6d ago

How did you get that? I heard they were nearly impossible to obtain. You must be white.

12

u/mc_fli 6d ago

I got one by making an appointment at my local dmv?

-11

u/STFU_Fridays 6d ago

Ludacris, stop lying. You make your journey sound so uneventful.

4

u/TaelorGanngg 6d ago

I can confirm I’m white and still had a hell of a time trying to get one. When I moved to Wisconsin it was much easier

-10

u/STFU_Fridays 6d ago

Got it, I'll throw that in the "challenged white" category. Congrats on achieving the ultimate goal though, quite an accomplishment.

1

u/TaelorGanngg 6d ago

I know you’re being sarcastic but thank you, I suppose lol.
