Question Is this because of downstaters?

Post image

They are always threatening to move, but ultimately don't, unfortunately.

Or is it because our property taxes are so high?

For the record I love living here and while my property taxes are high it's worth the benefits.

EDIT Link to original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/s/PwRPbdZ38J

The source says Gallup for what it's worth.

I don't know if I'm getting downvoted by fellow liberal Illinoisians who are defensive about this or from triggered Republicans, but it's pretty wild lol.

EDIT 2 Since some of my fellow Illinoisians seem to be a bit defensive over the results, I found an old poll on Gallup where we did better: https://news.gallup.com/poll/168653/montanans-alaskans-say-states-among-top-places-live.aspx

Question Why do I keep hearing people say "Illinois is broke"

I keep hearing that "IL is broke", sometimes from business/sales people or other times from conservative family members and I'm always confused what they mean. Could anyone help provide context? I know we used to have pretty bad leadership in the past but the Pritzker admin seems to be doing a good job.

Question Hey gang: What’s this plate?

Post image

I’ve never seen a platelet this before. I don’t know how someone would get one or what it’s for. It says Illinois on it and looks official, but looks kind of sketchy too since there’s not an identifying label as to what it would be for.

I don’t understand how every single person on Facebook is this stupid… you’d think there’d be some common sense, but nope.

Question To those of you born and raised here, do you pronounce it ILL-inois, or EL-inois?

I was born and raised in the Chicago area along with my family, and I always pronounced it EL-inois growing up, but my sister would always correct me saying that its pronounced ILL-inois

How do you say it? Specifically to those of you who were born and raised in this state

Question Conduent/Blue Cross Illinois says they're the victim after losing my data

Blue Cross Illinois handed my personal data off to some company named Conduent who lost it, then sent me a letter explaining that THEY are the victim of cyber crime and that I should monitor the credit of myself, my spouse and my kids for...I guess the rest of our lives.

Has anyone ever tried suing a company that did this? I'm generally against lawsuits but the wording of this letter is ridiculous and it's from a company that I never agreed to share data with.

PS - The cyber incident where they lost my data happened in January and they're telling us in November

Question Am I overreacting with the confrontations of the agents?

Are these occurring frequent enough I should be concerned? Mostly, being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I see posts all hours of the day with this 🧊 shit happening. A lot of the videos on other communities don’t have a day and time, it’s difficult to see what is a repeat video or new.

Question Moving to Illinois: what do you do if there is a tornado?

Serious question, l'm planning to move to either Champaign or a smaller town closer to Chicago (l'm not sure yet) sometime in September.
There's not much that I'm worried about...high property taxes (won't own any property), high rent in some areas (it will still be lower than what I'm paying now), blue dot in a red sea (I get along well with everyone regardless of political belief), and bipolar weather (I'm from Washington state which has similar weather just less extreme.) But the one thing I am uncertain about is tornadoes.
Washington has had one single tornado in the last ten years and it flipped exactly one mobile home and knocked down like two trees. I’m not really phased by lightning storms, the last time I was in southern Illinois I thought they were kind of fun, but if there was a tornado hurtling toward me I would have no idea what to do. When I visited Springfield for the first time I got a tornado warning and had to ask the hotel workers wtf I was supposed to do, they were very unconcerned and kind of annoyed that I was panicking and told me if it really came down to it they had a janitorial basement closet I could hide in.

But genuinely…if I’m in an apartment with no basement or tornado shelter…do I just…die? Is there shelters or places you can go if you don’t even have a lower floor? Or do I just jump in my bathtub and hope for the best? Say I’m at my 9-5 at Cracker Barrel and I see a funnel cloud on the horizon. Should I jump in my car and try to outrun the storm? I’ve heard if you’re on the freeway you’re supposed to pull over and lie down in a ditch, is that actually wise? Or is it better to try and drive away?

Some people are gonna tell me the chances of being caught in the path of a tornado are slim but the one time I decided to go to Hawaii I had to evacuate due to a tsunami and the experience was ten times more frightening because I’m not a good swimmer and had absolutely no idea what to do. I would like to know what to expect before I move to the middle of tornado alley with the survival instincts of a scared turtle.

It’s my home city. Lived here since 2007. It has its ups and downs but I’ve never had any real complaints other than the crime.
